Trash question

I recently backed up a friend files from a windows computer on an external drive. I plugged it into my imac to delete the files and it puts it in the trash, but when I go empty the trash it wont delete so I hold down option so it will delete it. This still wont delete it because it says the files are locked. Is there any other way to get rid of it without formatting?

This might be the case if it's files from Windows.

ya I checked it out, the only problem is the folder is not on my external, it is in the trash and will not delete even while holding down option.

Securely deleting files normally resolves any issue for me. If there's a lot or they're big it can take some time, but they go.
