Video conversion - dimensions ?

Hi all

i can convert video ok for Apple TV but I am finding handbrake is producing ultra wide video when I play it on my mac. I am now turning anamorphic off and clicking keep the aspect ratio etc

The thing is there has to be a reason as to why this is happening - can anyone explain the video screen sizes, like why are the output dimensions not simply the same as the input ?

Confessing my ignorance and confusion to all these formats, my new year's resolution to is learn this stuff

Sorry, should have thought of there first, I was taken by the though of a new AppleTV perhaps
