View Full Version : Lurkers! Come out of the closet....

Mr. Anderson
Apr 23, 2002, 12:27 PM
There has been some talk on some threads lately about posting and lurking. I'm putting this thread out to see how many 'lurkers' - members who have been around for a while and just read the board and don't post - are out there.

It will require you to actually post something, so if you've been coveting that '0 posts' count, you'll have to relenquish it. I'd love to see who's been lurking the longest as well.

So

'Come out, Come Out, Where ever you are!'

Lurkers are notorious for their NIMBY strategy. Their voyeuristic natures forbid participation.:p ;)

So I can post anyway or what?:p
btw, can't we see it somewhere who's 'lurking' through the threads?

Not if they haven't joined. I have a feeling a lot of the lurkers do so as guests. I think its cool that so many have "come out" recently.

There are alot of people who browse the forums and never post (quite a few of them are in my mac user group)

alot of people just pop in during the day at work, i would do this but I am at school most of the time

Well so far, everyone BUT the lurkers have posted...

(Damn, I just contributed to it! :p )

Ok, this is pathetic. The average number of the posts of the members responding so far is 685!!!

I was hoping for something closer to 1....

You forgot to include your last post with that one avarage is: 714:p
and with my post here: 642.

so if I would keep posting, we would reach 1 eventually:p :p :p

i lurked for months before i made my first post

my guess at people who are here a lot but do not always post are kela, mymemory, groov, and ambitious lemon

people who are here who almost always post besides me are probably eyelikeart, alphatech, mischief, and krossfyter

when i first log on, i see who is on and some posters who have very few posts compared to how often they are here are macrumors faithful, but would rather read instead of post and that is ok

also blakespot is here more often than he posts from what i have noticed

For the record:

A lurker would be someone who had no posts until they posted here, therefore their post count would be 1.

At this point anyone with less than 5 who didn't just join this week could win.

Its strange that none of the lurkers have actually posted, I wonder if it just because they are not as many as we thought there were or that they just want to remain lurkers!

LONG LIVE THE LURKERS!

Maybe we're not using the right kind of bait. I'll be happy to let this sit here over night and see how many show up and post. :D

I guess I will step up to the plate since no other lurkers decided to. I've "lurking" on this site for 6 or 7 months before I made my first postings yesterday. So, I think I count, unless you guys want to tell me otherwise.....

I've been active I thought, especially for someone whom goes to work full-time, school full time, & has the 2 1/2 kids. sometimes I actually have to work or study or something.

O.K. I have posted a couple of times. But it was months before I even registered!

You guys are just so entertaining to sit back and watch! Besides, by the time I come up with something quick and witty the topic has long since passed.

(My low number of posts might also have something to do with the lack of a spell checker here :D )

I have been reading the forums since last September and finally joined earlier this year. I don't post much, not because I don't want to, its just that most of the time I don't feel that I will really add anything to the conversation other than useless posts and bandwidth.

Now where did that shadow go...

The average has now dropped by a large amount. Glad you guys could come out into the light.

I registered in November, 01 and didn't post myself till January 02, so I guess I've been a lurker too. Now I found that I really enjoy participating in the discussions and banter, get caught up in the hype...

Lurkers are timid. We may have frightened them off with our 200+ post counts.

it's probably a good idea to lurk unless something really grabs you.

once you post a few times, you're sucked in... if for no other reason than to check back to see what so and so said back to you.

I actually cruse in and out a few times a day, but hardly ever post. It was a good few months before I even signed up . I guess I enjoy the mac community, but only add when it looks like someone else hasn't yet. Nothing is as irritating as reading a huge thread only to find a few original ideas. (Just raising their count? Nah!)

Man, I feel bad... everyone seems to have lurked before they joined! I just kinda rocked up, saw what a great place this is, posted for a week or so (without registering) and then registered. I guess I'm just not a lurker. It isn't in my nature. :)

I just enjoy all the speculation which I have none to add since I don't know I guy who actually cuts Steve Jobs' grass that got a glimpse of the new OS (no, not 10.2, but 10.2.1.34!!!!) and happen to decifer the speed of the system bus by calculating the vibrations in the house's windowpanes caused by the resonating frequency of the motherboard.

Actually, I don't post because of my secret Mac shame:

I have no idea what spring-loaded folders are.

Actually mischief, your number of post fall with the set defined by 200+, so you really didn't need to make a stink.

Anyway, its great that more of you lurkers are coming out, but when are we going to see the guy with the 1?

I joined up last summer and just now started posting. It was this forum that convinced me to switch platforms, so I figured I might as well contribute something. I still lurk a lot more than I post. I check these forums 20 or so times a day, usually spending around 4-5 hours here. I learn a lot, but I don't know a lot. That's why I don't post a ton of stuff. I've no desire to clog the board up with junk like this post. :) :)

OK, well, I was going to register as someone else just so I could be the person that posted with 1 pst, but then I realised how lame that could be. But it would be funny. So you can just laugh anyway! :)

There is a guy with one post at the end of the new tibook discussion... said he worked for a company that sold machines to intel. afifield107 is his username...

But that's not this thread, so it doesn't count, unfortunately.

And Beej, I was thinking someone might do that, but you would have been disqualified because your member date would have been the same. I was thinking more along the lines of a member lurking in the thread shadows for a while then coming out.

True, you could have said you were lurking as a guest, but it would have been a little fishy....:D

OK, I'll admit, I have been lurking for about a year, when I finally decided that it was time to start posting.
Lurking is fun though, I read through most of the threads, saw what you 500+ posters where talking about, and then I said: man, I thought they were discussing serious things :p So after a year I realised that even I could join in, (it took me practically a whole year to realise that:D )

Counting each individual once I get 398.8, pretty crappy. Mischief blew the curve, figures:D. Without him it would have been 337.2, still bad, but a big jump none the less.

I am he; I am the dude with, now, 1 post.

Been lurking here for quite some time. I still use the integrated monitor PowerPC Mac (5400?) and the Powerbook I got back in 1996 at the start of college. And I, like so many others, decided to read everything under the sun so as to make a good (or atleast better) decision on when to buy a new laptop.

All best,
