Disapearing dock icons and stacks

i recently bought a new iMac, but for some reasons, if i keep my mac running, the dock icons go funny.

I bring up the dock and everything seems fine, but when i move the mouse over some of the icons, they disapear, and when this happens, if i bring up a stack, all the icons have disapeared as well as the text but the gray ovals where the text is suppost to be remains. stacks view ok in grid format, but it is still odd

Have you tried something as simple as a reboot
 
yes the old switching it on and off again 😛

yes i did, and it does fix it but only for a bit, then it just comes back, i'm asking if there is any way to totally fix this?
