View Full Version : Why didn't YOU get an iPhone?

TheSpaz
Jan 14, 2008, 11:47 AM
I didn't get an iPhone because I pretty much hate phones so I wouldn't want to pay monthly for something I'm not going to use and I love music and movies so 8GB is not ideal for me.

I do however feel that it is cheesy that I have to hack my iPod touch just to get Mail and Notes (which should have come with it stock).

What are YOUR reasons?

Cos it's £269 for 8GB plus £35 per month totalling £899 over 18 months - for a phone!!

Plus, when the next model comes out, you'll be contractually stuck with the old one.

Plus, work pay for my mobile and all my calls, so I'll stick with a Touch which cost me just £250 for 16GB.

The minimum contract price of £35 a month is way too much for me, I only pay about £10 a month inclusing line rental currently.

Lack of disposable income, and a toddler...

The toddler likes to talk to mom/grandma/whoever on the phone often, so unless the phone was free or damn close, I'm not apt to get it due to the number of times it will be dropped...

I didn't get a iPhone since I rarely use a phone. The iTouch has everything I want and the dark, rich screen is impressive. I enjoy rotating my music and videos so I got the 8gb. Great purchase for me. And with SDKs, this product should just get better.

I don't really call anyone, and 16GB is more suitable for me. I will probably get one in the future, but not any time soon.

Had the money for the phone, but my fiancee gives birth to our child next month. $65 would better be used for diapers, extra groceries, formula, insurance.

- mainly too much of a pain to switch over from Verizon, having just signed a 2-year contract renewal; would have been hit up with a ~$200 contract cancellation charge
- anecdotal evidence suggests Cingular reception sucks
- preferred to hold tight and wait for a better, cheaper iPhone several years down the road

I hate O2. I love MMS. I love 3G. :D

I do believe Apple's UI is revolutionary and hope to own an iPhone one day. I'm not going to mess about unlocking and jailbreaking and all that jazz, though. So, for now, I'm using this N95 8GB (http://www.talk3g.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4644), which thankfully blows me away.

I wish I even felt a little bit jealous of folks I see with them, but when something's just not right for you, it's just not right.

Even if they did sell it here the phone companies would find some way to make it cost five times as much for half the use.

It's not officially released in the two places I'm living (Hong Kong and Australia) so I wont buy it until it is. However, when it is released, I'd want to pay for a completely unlocked device instead of cracking it as I don't believe in paying for international roaming when I travel. I like to buy a SIM card in the country and not have to worry about how much it's going to cost me later.

the very fact that it claims to do 'everything' ... but does none of it properly . .everything seems to lack something or another, notes that can't sync, browser that doesn't do flash, phone that can't do MMS, camera that can't do video, maps with no GPS, stocks with no interest for a layman, calendar is well done, but can't do multiple calendars ..

a very basic device for a HUGE amount of money .. .just can't justify any of it.. unless Jobs want me to spend just for that fancy touchscreen.

I haven't gotten one because I was still contractually obligated to Verizon. My 2 years expires this month, and I am going to continue on a month-by-month basis at least until my girlfriend graduated from college in May. She's about 2 1/2 hours from me when she's at school, so we talk on the phone a fair amount, and having free verizon to verizon minutes saves A LOT of money on minutes.

Once she's out and back home, I'm considering swithing to AT&T to get an iPhone sometime this summer or next fall. Plus by then there may or may not be a 3G iPhone, and at least there will have been some programs written with the official SDK.

I didn't get one because I live in Cananda. Though I have seen several for sale in my city online. And I've seen a couple people using them. Not up close though. (And no they weren't iPod touches, I know the difference.:p)

Soon the Ipod Touch will be able to do everything the iPhone does. It already can make calls through voip and by jailbreaking it you get the same apps. Add an adapter and you got your bluetooth. Soon someone will create a camera for it. So why would I pay $499 + $60 a month for the iphone?

I guess the iPhone would be a killer option if I was looking for one device that can do everything but, the 8GB would be too small and paying monthly charges for a phone which I hardly use (only in emergencies), it would cost me too much money to own when I could just use the iPod touch for that stuff without payments.... plus 16GB. I am kind of disappointed that there's no bluetooth, no speaker, no microphone, no side volume control, no mail, no weather, no maps, no notes, no stocks, and no ear-prints. (the last one was a joke). Anyways, I'm grateful for what I have and I live without those things knowing that I at least don't have to pay $60 a month or whatever they charge, for something I won't use. However, being able to go on the net no matter where I am would be freakin' sweet.... but slow but, sweet.

From what I gather, the VOIP only works in wifi areas. So what if I'm in the middle of Nebraska, and I want to make a call?

If your in the middle of no where Nebraska there is no guarantee your cell phone would work either. :D

You can get mail, weather, maps, notes, stocks just pay $20 or jailbreak it.

Honestly I do not make calls enough to justify the bill and extra $100. Now if they had a pay as you go or data plan only then I would be all over the iphone like white on rice.

None of my beeswax but - Oh please don't.
Save yourself the headache. We are back with Verizon after making the rounds, ATT sounds so appealing (rollover and iphone) but they have the worst service, least coverage, and most tragic customer service I have ever seen.

The iPod touch is just so damn sexy, the iPhone is ugly, especially the back. I can't understand it because they are so similar. Maybe I'm just strange :D

I hate contracts and subscriptions, I hate being forced to one carrier, I hate the rip-off rates and I hardly take or make calls. I have a super slim W880i for when I do.

Considering I stay in the centre of Glasgow it shouldn't be so hard to get a signal, but nope reception is hopeless - it wouldn't be so bad if this was the only blackspot, but when I visit the parents miles from home - you guessed it - zero reception, not even edge when it decides to pick up a signal for phone!!

That and not being able to txt/receive calls from powerbook, lack of video recording, no flash for camera, lack of MMS, 8Gb not big enough etc.

Even with these minor points, I've got my fingers crossed that o2 doesn't get the contract for the 3G version, if voda do, I won't even have to think about it!

Because it's something of a triumph of style over function as yet. I'm with 02 (UK iPhone carrier) and even replaced my handset at around the time the iPhone came out. Wound up buying a WM6 device with built-in GPS. It syncs to my Mac with Missing Sync, I have easy access to save files to and from the device (a feature I use daily at work) and can replace the microSD memory card, it has built-in GPS so runs TomTom and essentially works as a full-blown PDA. What I DON'T need, however, is either iTunes or video. On top of which, I got my current phone free with a cheaper contract than the basic iPhone package. No contest.

Let me lay it out in simple terms:

1. One iPhone (8GB) = $399 (+ tax if applicable)
2. One Add-On Service Plan for iPhone (If you are already an AT&T Customer) for 24-months = $480
3. An Activation Fee to activate the iPhone = $37

And a grand total of...$916 Hm...

Or go get an iPod touch (16 GB) for $399 (+ tax if applicable)

Seems liked an obvious choice to me... $916 or $399? I wonder...

Basically, you can buy TWO iPod touches (16 GB) for the same price of an activated iPhone that your bound to a contract with for two years. Unless you spend even MORE money to cancel your old contract, and get a new one!:D

I think a preschooler could have solved this mystery on why we bought an iPod touch over an iPhone...

The phone part has the one thing I actually DIDNT like about the iphone. The call quality was bad, you need those dumb bluetooth headsets to get a better quality. Plus I like clamshell phones that;s what I have plus I love my service with Sprint no way i'm changing!

Because I don't need another phone.

My campus has wireless literally everywhere, so my iPod now doubles as a Calendar, To-Do List, Web Browser, Weather, and Email device, (since I jailbroke it).

It would have been nice to have a 80GB or 160GB iPod Touch, but all in all I have 2,000ish songs on a 16GB touch. I put it on Shuffle almost always, and change up the songs every few days. I rarely notice a difference between shuffling between 16GB of songs (iPod touch) and 100GB+ of songs (my entire library).
