It's out. I don't know what it does but I downloaded it for my Mac and PCs.
For Mac users, there's also updates for Quicktime, FrontRow, and iMovie.

It has support for movie rentals. I don't actually see any other changes. UI is exactly the same, sort fields are the same. ITL looks the same in finder.

iTunes 7.6 is available in Software Update or via direct download (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/). The update adds support for Apple's new movie rental (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/15/apple-announces-itunes-movie-rentals/) service.
Rent and download your favorite movies with iTunes on your computer or directly to your living room on Apple TV. Enjoy rented movies in sizes up to 720p HD with surround sound on your Apple TV and sizes up to DVD-quality on your computer. Transfer your rented movies from iTunes to your iPod or iPhone and enjoy them on the go.
Also, purchase and download your favorite TV shows, music, and more directly on your Apple TV. Effortlessly transfer purchases made on Apple TV back to your computer with iTunes.

I am pretty pissed about this myself...I do want to rent as well, but I want to own some movies, and I want them in HD...
As for why the HD can't be played on a computer...that makes no sense at all.

After all the nonsense written to explain away the bug in the last version of iTunes/Quicktime, it's good to feed my collection with CBR at 256Mbs again with the CD's.
My iPod is happy with the new version!

Since upgrading to 7.6, I get the following error box when trying to load iTunes.
"The iTunes application could not be opened. There is not enough memory available."
I've repaired permissions and repaired the HD, Shutdown and logged in, still I get this error message. Does anyone have any idea why iTunes is displaying this error message? iTunes 7.5x was working fine before I upgraded to 7.6.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Since upgrading to 7.6, I get the following error box when trying to load iTunes...You could try trashing file /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist. I don't know if that will help. It's just one of the standard tricks when an application misbehaves.

I saw a side-rail (right) that was labeled "Top Rentals" clicking on the links or the label was taking a long time... so I bailed and starting looking elsewhere on iTunes... "Top Rentals" has since disappeared from existence.
BTW, Zoolander was in the "Top Rentals" list and the list was maybe only 10 titles deep.

Thanks for the tip, tried it but I finally had to drag iTunes to the trash, use Permanent Eraser to empty the trash. Logged out and in, reinstalled iTunes 7.6 and let it find my library and import all the m4p's I've purchased. Now it seems to be working will have to wait and see what happens next time I decide to upgrade.

I don't think that's what they mean. I've been checking out the HD podcasts on my G5 with an ACD and they're definitely in HD.
I think what they mean is DVD quality on MOST computers depending on the display and graphics capabilities. They don't want to say HD on your computer because many people don't have the ability to watch HD on their computer.
But they can say it about the AppleTV because it's intended to for HDTV's.
I can't see Apple uploading two of the same movie, one in HD and one in DVD.
Seriously though, check out the Podcasts.

Well, Jobs said that it worked on all current iPods. The 5 and 5.5g aren't really current. Even though I most likely won't use the rentals, and if I do I have my iPhone, I still hope they'll work on the 5 and 5.5g just incase I want to use one on my 5.5g.

I can't see Apple uploading two of the same movie, one in HD and one in DVD..
Odds are that since they'll be getting two different rates for the different sizes I think they might just make the effort.
As far as I can tell all HD content is slated only to be available for the ATV Take 2. That said, when the ATV update software drops in February we might just see them released for everybody else. Its highly likely the HD delivery mechanism isn't really in place just yet and won't be until the software is ready to drop.

Ratatouille is available for renting at 3.99. Selecting the rent button will ask you to confirm if you really wanna do that (with an option to disable this warning).
Not sure if any others are for rent tho. Was hoping to try but i own Ratatouille!
Check that. Ice Age is rentable for 2.99 as is The Artistocats and Garfield. It's a little spotty, figuring this out, but I can see from the list view of the store that some movies have 2.99 prices. I had thought that anything with no price next to the "view movie" button was rentable now, but it turns out i lucked out with Ice Age.
I'm working on pics, but I might get too lazy! :)

Finally!!!!
Multitrack Audio Films come to iTunes in 7.6!!
You can now select different audio tracks such as director commentaries within iTunes and don't have to launch Quicktime and deselect and select the new track !!!
This is a long needed feature!!!!
TV shows are seperated out I noticed but in Front Row doesn't really help with seasons as they are titled the same - perhaps Front Row update with Apple TV 2 update coming out will fix this ?

Why do you need an AppleTV do rent HD movies I wonder?
The only reason I can think of is that there are not many HD computers out there. It would seem like about the only way to stream HD movies to your TV wouldl be via Apple TV. Since this is the case it would only make since to download the movie straight to the Apple TV.

Well, not to mention, iPod and iPhone can't playback hd video, so it would have to re-encode when syncing, which would take............................................... forever.

I found the reason for my problem, iTunes was just superslow, it sometimes takes 20 s after my click till it starts to play a song, and in that time, it also is not able to show the window. So it was still running, but computing something.
Did iTunes also update your library after you installed the update? At that moment, I didn't have my external harddrive with my library plugged in, so it couldn't do that. Do you know what it is doing at this point? Maybe, that might be a reason for my problem, but I don't know how to give iTunes a second chance to update the library...

:(:(
I recently upgraded to iTunes 7.6.0.2.9. I love renting movies and wanted to give iTunes a try.
iTunes is 0-2. :(:(
I’ve rented two movies “Blades of Glory” and “Transformers” and I wasn’t able to watch either of them.
I’ve used iTunes to watch TV shows, music videos, etc. I’ve even WATCHED purchased movies on iTunes!
But, I’m not able to watch the rentals. :(:(
After the movie successfully downloads, I click PLAY. A dialog box opens and says I have “24 Hours” to watch the movie.
Then.. another dialog box opens to “play” the movie (like normal) but all I get is a giant black screen. Then....My iTunes FREEZES.
My Laptop does NOT freeze.
iTunes only freezes on Movie Rentals and not movie purchases. So, this is an obvious bug….
I’m out $8.00.
