Question about Maps app

Do I have to be connected to a hotspot to use the Google maps app or are the maps actually downloaded to the iPod so I can use them whilst offline ?

You have to be online. It's like Google Earth for PC/Mac - you need a connection to view maps/satellite photos. However, there seems to be a cache so maps you have already viewed are available offline.
