An AppleInsider post earlier in the year had indicated that Apple would be showing something "super secret" (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/01/02/apple_presenting_secret_at_final_cut_meet_radiohead_on_itunes.html) at tomorrow's Final Cut Pro user group meeting. The most likely scenario at this point is that the secret technology is in fact the MacBook Air (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/15/apple-announces-macbook-air/) that was announced today. A product to replace Shake (http://www.macrumors.com/2006/06/19/shake-4-1-and-price-drop/) (code-named Phenomenon (http://www.macrumors.com/2006/06/21/end-of-shake-phenomenon-in-2008/)) has been rumored to arrive in 2008, but it is doubtful that that product's introduction would take place in such a setting.
We have also heard unconfirmed rumblings that MacBook Pro updates are to come shortly, though no exact timing is indicated.

It almost seems logical at this point that a multitouch trackpad will be incorporated into the MB and MBP in short order. And we all know that the ACD are loooonnnnggggg overdue for an update especially in light of the lack of an iSight camera for Mac Pro owners.
Don't even get me started on the lack of updates for the Mac mini...
It would be nice if they incorporated some of the new rental features of the AppleTV Take 2 software into FrontRow so we could use them on the mini.

That doesn't make any sense at all. Final Cut users are pretty much the last people on the planet who would have any use for a machine that maxes out at 2GB of RAM and has no FireWire ports. Maybe they could use it as a coffee cup warming pad, but that's about it.
Maybe it's some Blu-Ray related announcement that everyone seems to have been expecting in Tuesday's keynote.

After seeing the price of the MacBook Air and it's lack of dedicated graphics card, even though I expected it, I guess I get to replace my 12" PowerBook with a 15" MacBook Pro. I doubt I could get a 13.3" MacBook Pro, which is what I'd want. Steve thinks a 15" would be better for me I guess. :p

Most of FCP's components will not run on the Air. While I am not completely sure of the specs, I believe the Air has an integrated video chip. Not enough video power to run FCP. It will not even load. Perhaps Express, but who wants to be saddled with loading video through the USB? Not that you couldn't make it work, but it sure won't be presented as a stand alone editor. BTW, I am not making this as a critique. Something so light and portable is not meant for that type of work. It will still fly as a light-work graphics and photoshop editor. Not to bad given its size.

Oh please introduce the iMac Air! A .16-inch thin, .5-pound mac with 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 144MB of integrated graphics, and a 80GB 4200-rpm hard drive and no optical drive, one USB2 and no Firewire or ethernet ports and non-accessible 2GB memory! Oh and no speakers, internal or external, please. I'll pay $2500. It can even replace the Mac Mini line. Why not.

Apple Apple Apple.... i wait for months and months for a new MBP expecting it waiting for it anticipating it.. getting up 1AM in the morning to watch MacRummors live coverage but then at Steve Jobs speech nothing, no update no change. :(:(:(
So i decided i better just buy it and was planning on doing so in the next week but then i hear this, more rummors more speculation and i am left with... Should i buy or should i wait?... as i have been left with for months.

Why do you need it by Jan? An update is near certain...It's just the timescale that's the uncertainty. The MBP hasn't been updated since August and with the new Penryn mobile processors now out, even Intel have stated there will be a 2.6GHz Penryn MBP.
If you can hold off for a while longer, it would be worth it.
I plan on waiting...and waiting...and waiting until the update. I'm in no rush, and the longer I wait, the more money I can save, and then I'll be able to get the best spec I can afford (such as a huge hdd). May have to order Time Capsule though too...

Hi all
I'm a video pro, and this topic was raised on creativecow. The organiser of the event replied:
"Just to set the record straight, there is no truth to the rumor that Apple will use the SuperMeet for a product announcement. I'm one of the producers of this event.
Those that know me know I use the phrase 'Super Secret" all the time. Have for years. It's a take off on "super meet." I use it when I honestly dont know what the presenter is presenting. And in this case I honestly don't know what Apple is presenting. Whatever it is, it wont be a new product. SuperMeets are about teaching us something. The FCP team always uses these SuperMeets for that purpose. Not for product announcements."
See the thread here:
http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/969064#969064
Hope that clears everything up. Why would Apple announce anything pro video related now? NAB is in April.

I was one (of many?) hoping for a little upgrade to the MBP range - Penryn processors, resolution raised to 1680x1050 for the 15 inch model, at least as an option, and possibly 320gb HDD option (though Apple is always charging way too much for a simple HDD upgrade!)
Penryn will most likely arrive in MBP, the question is when.
Other comments:
MacBook Air: Would be nice to be able to upgrade the 80gb drive in the MBA with a SSD once prices becomes more reasonable. Didn't 160gb 1,8" drives just come out? 80gb is not much these days...
Anyone knows what resolution the micro-DVI is capable of driving?
Apple TV upgrade - well I never thought the product name was that appropriate - where's the TV tuner in that thing to justify the naming (and pricing) ?!
Or at least the ability to connect a USB TV tuner :(
Time Capsule - nice, but lacks a lot of the features my Synology product is capable of, but hey I can just hook it up on the USB port...
Sadly you can't exchange the HDD yourself, but I guess that's typical of Apple products.
I've seen posts about 30W power consumption (does anyone know more?) - I hope the HDD can hibernate to facilitate lower consumption!

Where were you going to buy it from? If not online then, since there are no Apple stores in Australia, and usually resellers take a while to get stuff in (according to the guy where I got mine - a Next Byte - Apple don't really give the resellers priority). What I'm getting at is that if you order at the end of Jan and they release an update on 2nd Feb, you'd probably get the new one.
Of course, that doesn't help you if you need it to USE it by the end of Jan. either way, I'd recomend going and talking to your reseller and finding out how long it'd take to come in (my MBP took almost 5 weeks).

I'd been holding off getting a MBP until the keynote, hoping there'd be an update, with hopefully a smaller 12"/13" screen. But after discovering there wasnt, I bought a 15" last night.
I need one for my work and can't wait any longer, but I can't see one coming out anytime soon anyway. Apple would have announced it yesterday, if so.

Actually, it has happened before recently although I can't quite remember when. I expect MacBook Pro updates quietly next Tuesday - to include processor bumps (to Penryn) and multi-touch, no announcement.
If so, you'll be able to take your back and exchange, or more likely you'll be delivered the new version. Steve Jobbs won't annouce it because its most likely not quite ready (as they were hard at work finalising the Air or whatever) or they didn't want to detract from the MacBook Air announcemnet. Penryn only just came out so it may not have been ready.
I'll be waiting and buying then. I should have my bonus by then :D

That's my guess, too. Or at least no later than the end of February. Chances are, they'll just be speed bumps. Nothing major.
As for new displays, I'd expect to see those, as well as the Shake replacement, at NAB later this year.

Chances of them announcing this any time other than yesterday are slim, but I've been holding out on buying a new PC in the hopes Apple would release a mid-range alternative to the Mac Pro.
There's a gaping void in their product line now that's just begging to be filled by a consumer oriented stand-alone tower in the neighborhood of $1500 that features a desktop version of the Core2Duo (w/ BTO options for Core2Quad), 2 or 3 GB standard Ram, GeForce 8800GT graphics, two large hard drives configured for data security RAID, a couple free expansion slots, and more USB ports than the skimpy 3 that are on the current iMac.
I've already switched over to a MacBook Pro laptop, but I just can't justify $3000+ for a well-configured Mac Pro (stock system is processor overkill but weak on graphics, Ram, and hard drive space), and I don't want to throw away $1500 on a disposable iMac that's little more than a laptop in a bigger case.

I agree. I'm a graphic designer, and I've always used the PowerMac to do my work. The Mac Pro is just overkill. I don't need 8 cores to run InDesign or even Photoshop.
My current machine is a 24in. iMac, which has been surprisingly great for me. I was a bit hesitant because of its disposability, but it's held up quite well, and frees up a lot of room on my desk.
Unfortunately, I don't see Apple releasing this 'mid range' tower, because they've positioned the iMac as the level just below the Mac Pro. The gap is actually between the Mac Mini and the iMac. And frankly, I'm not sure exactly what that product could possibly fill that gap.
If you're looking for something below the Mac Pro, I'd strongly suggest getting an iMac.

true dat .. i expect some further silent upgrades especially the mini going SR and then perhaps screens and with some distance (february) the pro books and perhaps imacs for not stealing the thunder of the macbook air
though the normal macbooks desperatly needs an upgrade too ... the whole line simply has to go superdrive for god's sake ... this is the year 2008
edit: an yeah the consumer midi tower simply is missing .. too bad that steve jobs won't sign such a thing
i know the day i buy a macbook to replace my aging G4 Mac mini he is going to release that thing in a surprise announcment

Ugh! Just when I decide to bite the bullet on Saturday and order a new MBP to replace my current one, this rumor hits. Now I don't know what to do! I knooooow I should wait until the new ones come, but who knows how long that will take. And to add more dilemma, I'll be buying through EPP, but there's no telling how long it might take for the new ones to hit that store (and once the new ones ARE released, I won't be able to buy anything with that discount until the new ones DO hit).
So, I could buy now and sell it once the new ones are released and hit EPP, or I could just hang on to my current one until then.. but that could be 6 months for all I know. Of course if it turns out to be 6 months then buying now would be worth it, but if it turns out to be 3 weeks, not so much.
Oh crud. I hate Steve sometimes.

That's silly advice. Yes, buy now if you absolutely need it, but to just ignore speculation & trends could leave you just as unhappy. Oh, it's a sad day when someone puts down their hard-earned cash for the newest machine, gets it, opens the box, and wakes up the next morning to find they're already outdated. Sure, it doesn't make your machine any less functional, but it definitely decreases the bang for buck factor.

If you're looking for an "xMac" or "Mac" machine you'll have to get in line. There are a headache-inducing number of posts and threads on the subject already. Not that I disagree, but you've got one detail totally wrong.
RAID is a fool's errand for consumer machines. RAID is a great, cheap way to achieve high availability so that a machine doesn't completely die in the event of a hard drive failure. RAID is not a useful tool for data security or an alternative to backups. There's absolutely zero chance Apple would promote RAID on a consumer machine, especially now that they've got a much better solution in the form of Time Machine.

Don't you feel great that they didn't upgrade hardware in the iphone? I do, the software that they just released should of been on there from day one. Plus they still have a ways to go on the software side, before they do a major hardware update. Just my 2 cents.

...unless of course you BTO'd any options, in which case you cannot return your older model at all.
...and of course my "next day" analogy was simply a hyperbole. Anywhere within that first month is equally heartbreaking, IMO.

Agreed, this happened to me when I bought my FIRST Powerbook. I spent $3600 on a 667Mhz (Yes, that's Mhz) TiBook with a 48GB hard drive and an 16MB video card with VGA, only to have it replaced by an 800Mhz model with a 32MB Radeon card and DVI only 3 weeks later for hundreds of dollars less. I can't remember if Apple usually have a song on their Keynotes. I don't remember one so I wondered if they were short a product and had drafted in Randy to stop a gap.
This idea lent weight to the concept of the MBP being delayed waiting for the Penryn chips.

Haha, ouch. I know though, I love people's ignorance. "Just buy it now. It's a great buy and you'll love it." If I wanted BS marketing I'd go to Best Buy and ask them about their "great value" machine. If I needed it now, well, no duh I'd buy it.
Some people may laugh at those who wait for updates, but I will always laugh harder at those who don't have the patience or self control to wait for the upgrade that's imminent and complain later.

Yeah I was one of those that was credit card ready for the MBO yesterday, and if the air didnt have the multitouch trackpad, i probably would buy one, but knowing an updates right around the corner ill wait awhile.

Well, I have been waiting since before Christmas to get a MacBook, and while I really love the MacBook Air, it is not for me.
I think it is quite likely that we will see MacBook/Pro updates in the next month, so I will wait till February to order. Steve did not announce them yesterday because he does not want the focus to be taken away form the Air, and there is also the possibility that they are simply not ready yet. And if the Mac Pro can be updated a week before Macworld, would it be so unusual for the MacBooks to get updated a week after? Another benefit for Apple in doing this would be more free publicity.
I hope that the 13.3" MacBook will get an aluminum case, an LED backlit screen and a multi-touch trackpad. Other than those things, the current MacBook is just about perfect for my needs.

If you buy it end of Jan, and something else comes out, you have 28 days to return it. So take it back and get the new one. Statuatory rights rock.
28 days? as far as I know the Apple Retail Store have a 14 day return policy. And if you open it up there is a nce restocking fee to go along with it as well, something in the area of 10% I think.

Their is a conference at the end of the month called PMA 08. Apple is one of the exibitors and in the past have released revisions to their Pro products at this event.
Plus, I dont think Intel has offically released the mobile version of the Penryn, I thought it was Jan. 20th.
Either way Im in the same boat as a lot of you, I have been waiting for a MBP update and thought one would come yesterday. I am holding out until at least the begining of Feb to see what happens at this event.
My guess for the new Macbook Pros is as follows...multi-touch trackpad, Penryn, and magnetic lid (no more latch) and the keyboard of the macbook.

I see they introduced Apeture at this event, and I believe in '06 their was speed bump in the MBP's. Anything is possible though.
It can really be at anytime though, if you all remember back when Apple released the Macbook, it was just an ordinary Tuesday morning, because he went through all the changes when he introduced the 1st gen MBP.
Now Apple has released the MacBook Air and he introduced the multi touch trackpad and thats about it for new. The rest of his presentation was just about the custom C2D and how slim it is.
All of the changes that will be made on the Macbook Pro's is nothing we havent seen before, so don't expect a special event to usher them in.

The current chipset is what's holding this back. When the new Montevina chipset comes to the MBP we may see an increase in the RAM capacity....would be good to have a MBP with 8GB RAM :D

i'm in the same boat as a lot of you guys... i've been wanting to get a 17" macbook pro for a while now since my crappy old 2004 dell inspiron (which i got in senior year of high school) is pretty much done, but figured i should wait until after macworld when i thought they would announce new pennryn processors, and maybe even a blu-ray drive. since that obviously hasn't happened, should i just say to hell with it and buy one? i'll be doing a lot of music editing but not too much with video, i think. will the new processors make a huge difference or not?
for something so trivial, this question is really eating me up inside. i don't want to spend $2500 only to find out that a brand new model has come out as soon as i open the packaging.

well it's save to say that it's pretty close to updates,if you look at the buyers guide, and the new chips have already be announced as well so it's just a matter of when those production processes come along
my guess for a MBP speed bump is february since the don't want to have them released to close to each other to steal the thunder...

I can't really see Apple releasing updates now. They would have said something at MWSF. They'll probably wait for the buzz of the MacBook Air to calm down and then release something.
So what's next for the MacBook Pro?
Well here's what I want/think we'll see.
A new keyboard. Both the MacBook and MacBook Air sport Apple's new keyboard design, expect it on the MacBook Pro soon.
New Penryn processor. Give it the boost to seperate it even more from the MacBook.
15" HD screen. With Apple offering these HD movies, expect HD screens in the higher end products, then later in the lower end products.
The new Apple Cinema Display's will also sport HD screens.
Just my thoughts. :)

Hi all
I'm a video pro, and this topic was raised on creativecow.
No new Products. Move along. Nothing to see here.
See the thread here:
http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/969064#969064
Hope that clears everything up. Why would Apple announce anything pro video related now? NAB is in April.

First be wary of bad information based on good intent.
If you buy an Apple in the Unites States from ANYWHERE besides Direct from APPLE there is -0- return allowed, PERIOD. OF course if it's DOA from a authorized vendor perhaps there is recourse.
IF you buy a STOCK APPLE direct you have 10 days to return the item.
Stock equates to "original configuration" adding ram or ANYTHING additional equates to a CTO, there is -0- return for this item

According to the UK Store website: There's no restocking fee in the UK, and we have 14 calendar days from delivery to return if we've simply "changed our mind". There are transport charges though, which for items over £300(ex. vat) is £60. This also covers CTOs, as the only terms they specify as not being legible for a refund are laser engraved iPods, and of course software.

The new MBP to be announced in the coming days will come stock with a 2.6/ 200 gig 7200 rpm drive /2 gig ram and will be 200.00 less than the current model.
The new processor will come in June with the blue ray option.

I think he's talking about how they already have the "use the two fingers for scrolling" type thing. Software update could be possibly, but who knows.
Yes, that is what I meant. My reasoning is thus: my track pad can tell the difference between 1 and 2 fingers, great. But it can also tell the difference between 2 and 3 fingers, since if I put down three fingers in a row and try to scroll, nothing happens. Hey, it might be wishful thinking, but I'm hopeful. :o

I think that from the MWSF, the signs are that Apple is gunning for a drip feed of new products and features, possibly every month. With more products out now, they have a decent overlap, so their cycles aren't in sync.
I'd say the MBP will come out soon, with touchpad similar to the Air, February at a guess. Which kinda makes it harder to predict accurately now, as it could be unannounced / impromptu announcements of bumps or upgrades on any given Tuesday

The restocking fee or return fee or whatever it's called is £50 in the UK, as I found when I returned a MacBook Pro a few months ago because the high resolution screen (which I hadn't been able to see before I'd bought it) made everything so small I was getting eyestrain. Don't start with the workarounds, I tried them all including glasses, but I'm getting old and there it is.
£50 it was to send it back because I'd changed my mind when I got to use it.
Other than my eyesight problems it was fabulous.

According to the terms and conditions on the UK store website, its just a £60 transport charge (probably disguised as a "restocking fee") for a Macbook (anything over £300 ex vat).
At least there's an option to change our minds though, with something so expensive.

There seriously should be a club titled "waiting for the new MBP."
I have been waiting for a while and it seems like so many of you have too!
Personally, I am in no hurry as it will be for college, but nonetheless, I am getting quite anxious as I can consider buying it sooner because of a photo class using Mac computers.
I have no harsh feelings towards Apple as some of you do. Updates take time and I understand their business stance 100%. Macbook Air would lose attention if they started to release updates to their more practical notebook line. I am thinking they expected a better acceptance to the air laptop, but alot of people (including me frankly) cannot justify so much money on something so cool and yet has nothing to offer. Chastise me once, chastice me twice. Women as a market would be interesting, cept the women I have ever known never were into technology. It would definitely be interesting if the new home computer for wives was the Macbook Air.
All and all, I'd love to get an Apple display, just waiting for them to make them a tad more reasonable in the price. I would probably pay 500 tops for a 20 inch. I do not need the icam but high definition would be nice.
Lets see how things turn out. :apple:

Question regarding this whole MBP subject...
I'm using this solely for logic pro 8, no gaming, no video editing...just logic...about 80% of the time i am going to have it plugged in so battery life isn't that important to me...i just need a mac that can handle logic pretty well, and sometimes when i need it be able to push a little more...i have a mac pro for home...but i'm on the road a lot
With all that i've read about the new mobile penyrn processors...the real advantage seems to come in on the battery life due to the reduced voltage, and the extra 2MB of L2 cache. How much difference will i see (with all the info given) when the MBP updates to these new processors while using logic? Will that extra 2MB give that much of a performance difference? I could care less about the new keyboard or magnetic lock or the multi-touch...my main concern is the processor...i'm looking to get the 15" 2.2ghz...I could honestly give a crap less if the performance difference is minimal
I know that everything is going to get updated at some point...i'd just rather have the knowledge that if it gets updated in Feb that there won't be a drastic difference in performance on Logic is all...My thoughts are that it won't make too much of a difference within logic 8...but i could be wrong...could anyone help me out here on this? I'd really like to end this wait and get to work on some projects instead of wasting time

Everyone said the same thing last year. The answer is: no.
Why would Apple release something shortly after Macworld? I say we don't see anything major until May. (but that does make me wonder why Apple released the MacPro a week before MW... it alongside the MBA would have made a great show!)

For those of you who have been advised to go ahead and purchase a MacBook Pro and return it if an update is released soon, be careful where you step. According to Apple's Sales and Refund Policy here (http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/salespolicies.html), an RMA must be obtained within 14 days of delivery, and then you have another 14 days to return it to Apple (not as simple as just having 28 days to do whatever you like with it). Also, if it's opened, Apple will deduct a 10% restocking fee. 10% of $2500 (for a mid-line MBP) is $250, which isn't trivial--especially if you're just planning to re-purchase.

Logic Pro 8 runs beautiful on the current MBPs (I have one with 4 gb RAM) even while recording on the internal drive of the MBP. Logic's performance won't really rest so much on processor speed.. as it will on RAM and hard drive speed. I was running Logic and Digital Performer on a 1ghz Titanium powerbook G4.. but the recording was all carried out on a 10k SCSI drive. Handled great - 64+ tracks with plug-ins, etc.
What eats up RAM pretty fast is virtual instruments like Atmosphere, Stylus RMX, etc.. but I have had no problems running intense projects on the MBP.
The processor speed difference won't matter. What would be interesting is that SSE4 instruction was build into a logic update.. to take advantage of those new processors. Hmm.. a 40% performance boost? Now that would be amazing :)

When it comes to Logic, at the moment it works best in OS 10.4.9.
As someone who has used MainStage for 70 shows thus far and also have used logic in a live scenerio for years i suggest you wait till afer the expo is complete, buy the fastest MBP and revert the OS to what i stated at the start of the thread.

There seriously should be a club titled "waiting for the new MBP."
There is. :D

But my problem is i need it no matter what by the end of January.. but it will hurt so much if on 2FEB an upgrade comes out.
Any comments?
I am 95% in your situation! I waited and hell, expected a fully fledged update at Macworld.
I was going to buy one when the 15" was updated with LED-Backlit but I actually wanted the 17" (but sadly no backlit love at the time) so I decided to wait months. One main reason was because I heard that "all" or "most" of apples products would be updated with this technology "soon".
When the small processor speed update rolled around I was disappointed that pretty much nothing significant was updated. At that time, one rumour site was quoted as saying "macbook pro updates in January" and since that wasn't too far off I decided to wait-again.
Now here we are in January and the new rumour is 2 February (no, I don't blindly trust rumour sites but right most of the time, just off with timing!). Where did this new date come from?
I also live in Australia btw.

gaaahhh... this whole MBP upgrade thing is starting to turn into an existential crisis for me. i think i need to just go out and buy one, because if i wait any longer and nothing happens i might be tempted to buy a PC instead.

There is a new rumor circulating that the latest MBP line will release potent pheromones in order to draw attention from members of the opposite sex. Any modest increase in hardware/user productivity will likely be accompanied by other more distractive forms of productivity. :apple::apple::apple:
