With no new MBP, I'm going to wait. But my PowerBook is really straining so I want to reduce the size of my iTunes library (currently 25GB).

I've made a smart playlist of songs not played within the last six months (I figure I can go without those songs til I get a new MBP with larger HDD) - is it possible to export those few thousand songs onto an external HDD to then add back on to iTunes when I get a new MBP?

Does all that make sense?? Any help appreciated...

Yes, you can do that.

Click on the playlist, CMD-A to activate all songs, click on them and drag them over to the external.

But you'll loose the playcount information I guess.

Doesn't seem to work - I can drag them one at a time but if I select all 1255 it just doesn't work...

Any ideas?

Strange. It always works fine here.

Make sure the target finder window is already open before dragging the files; change applications with CMD-TAB.
