Strange. I'm in the New York area (Brooklyn) and the last thing my tracking info shows is international shipping release. Did I miss the boat to Newark? :(

I wouldn't give up hope yet... it took a while for the shipping info to be updated. Check with flight tracking webtool the fed ex flights from indianapolis to EWR or possibly JFK. Yours might just go straight there... both flights to EWR were delayed by 1 hour, so I think we might have gotten really lucky in Newark area...

My original date btw was for Monday as well.... 2/4 FYI

Looks like my MBA which had an estimated delivery date of the 4th will be delivered today according to FedEx!

CSR told me it was because I had overnight shipping.

My 1.8/ssd just left shanghai

I just called Fedex and they said that mine never left Indy even though others did get on the Newark flight. When I asked why I just got a big shrug. Monday, she said. We might be in the same situation. It just seems really strange that everyone else in NYC is getting them today! Argh. :confused:

Mine is also out for delivery, yay! Hopefully the same applies to everyone that saw theirs leave Alaska yesterday so they'll be a wave arriving today. Also, being a newbie, apologies for leaving out the ordering info, it was around 4:15pm on 1/15 and it's the basic 1.6/80 model.

Man, I really couldn't sleep tonight at all and wasted so much time reading the 2000+ entries.. now its time to give back to everyone.. so best of luck! Especially to the ones living in central florida who want it soo badly (whatever happened to the guy in Gainesville?! lol)...

I believe you - I think you were lied to. Wouldn't be the first time. Most Apple employees don't have a lot of integrity and consistently will lie for company line (or to get you off their back!)

Still no verified retail purchases yet nor any Applestore acknowledgment to having any for sale but not permitted to until ?????

I really wouldn't count out a delivery today or tomorrow just yet. I ordered a bunch of promotional engraved ipods for Christmas and they were delivered from China in two days and they were in my hands while the fedex tracking was saying at sort facility.... Good luck.

This is not directed at you specifically (for all I know, you may be living a couple of days drive from the nearest Apple store), but I just can't understand why people pre-order stuff, when 9 times out of 10 it shows up in the stores before they get it in the mail. Well, perhaps it's the thrill of anticipation, I dunno :confused::rolleyes:

There are many reasons, custom configurations, the 1 out of 9 chance and most of all because you are guaranteed one. And it doesn't cost you anything to cancel your order if it is available in the store. At the very least you can refuse the shipment and get a refund.

Most usb powered hard drives (not flash drives) do have the Y cable that plugs into 2 usb ports which the mba only has one of. I'm guessing that most usb powered hard drives will not work, but I guess we'll find out in a day or so when people start messing with them.

The Y cable is not required, it is only included in case your laptop has low powered USB ports. I leave the Y cable in the box and use a regular USB cable with mine, works fine.

I put my order in Jan 15 around a quarter to noon PST.

Now it's due here Wednesday Feb 6, originally due Monday the 11th. I didn't like the idea of it maybe sitting around in depot over the Feb 9-10 weekend. Midweek delivery by next week will be so much better!

I got Waterfield stuff for sleeve and bag. It's here for two days already. There's an accessory thread I posted to about that. I love Waterfield b/c they cn spl QUALITY.

just checked up on my shipment

it looks like "left origin" doesn't mean it left china yet guys!
prob just means that it left apple factory

im on "in transit" now which is a day later...

whats also interesting is my estimated for apple is feb 5th and now in fedex site it says feb 6th i hope this is padded

oh and the superdrive looks like it's coming from the US
wierd.. i guess they shipped a huge amount of them to the US already

looks like once it get shipped status
it will be in china for another day
then fly out and status will change from left origin update to in transit update

then to ak for x amount of time depending on alot of stuff
but once it leaves there it seem ppl get them the morning after

What an interesting ordering experience! Well my package arrived late, and literally missed being placed on the delivery vehicle by minutes. Needless to say, a delivery exception was created, and I called FedEx. After talking to a few of the most courteous and helpful people ever, I got a phone call back from Fedex corporate saying that they are putting my package on another truck for me, and are driving it over now. I was thrilled!!! Kudos to FedEx for doing the right thing and making sure everything works out!

There are 3 MBA's on display here at the Apple store in Lenox Mall Atlanta. They had 3 base models come in early but I'm waiting for the SSD. They have not received there freight shipment yet which should arrive around 2pm I was told. I expect more to be on that shipment.

Thats awesome. This is my first Mac. They have been giving me a hard time at work saying it won't work on the system, etc. I really hope it is as cool as everyone says it is and I don't have any problems with it. Then I can rub it in the face :p Mine has "left origin"

Mine has the same "Left origin" timestamp as well. I'm guessing (based on the tracking info from everyone else) they will leave China tonight, then Monday they will leave Alaska, and we should get them on Tuesday.

No photos unfortunately -- I'm sure you've seen enough by now!

First impressions:

1) The machine is definitely quick (base model). I've never experienced a significant lag, or anything bouncing on the dock more than twice.
3) As everyone else has mentioned the screen is beautiful!
2) My AT&T USB Air card works perfectly. Sits in the USB slot when the MBA is on a desk without a problem.
3) Quality and build is impeccable.

Other than that -- nothing. No complaints, no gripes. I'm in love. :D

Anyone have any questions?

In regards to bags, I've been a big fan of SpireUSA.

I purchased a vertical bag back in 1999(?) for my then new PowerBook G3 Pismo. I've been using the same bag with different Macs (currently a MB Pro 15") for the past seven or so years and it's still in great shape.

But I realized the MBA (for me) is all about weight and my bag probably weighs more than the MBA, so I decided it is time for a new bag. But I wanted one that is small, light and easy to lug around.

I looked at many manufactures, but decided to stick with Spire. I purchased the Spire 13" Dart. It weighs about a pound and looks like it'll fit the bill. It should be here on the same day as my MBA. I couldn't have planned it any better.

They have a cool 360 view that really shows how thin this bag is and also has compartments for some docs, adapters, etc. Check it out.

Congrats to all of you who have your MBA's already- have a great weekend with them- for the rest of us!

The Southlake store has one SSD and one HD model on display ONLY- none for sale yet, and no idea when they will. The employees have been right on with all the information they have given me so far, so I trust this information.

Update on my MBA-
1.9/90 ordered 01/15 12:24 PM PST went "Prepared for Shipment" this morning, and my Superdrive has already shipped (it went "Prepared for Shipment" yesterday).

I was under the impression that the only time that my order would change is during working hours in China. This morning sometime between 8-9 am EST, my MBA (1.8/SSD/no iWork or other "stuff") went to "Prepared to ship". I ordered it at 5:42 PST on the 15th.

Does anyone know if they are flying things out on Saturday?

Hopefully, this will get to Alaska sometime this weekend.

In regards to bags, I've been a big fan of SpireUSA.

I looked at many manufactures, but decided to stick with Spire. I purchased the Spire 13" Dart. It weighs about a pound and looks like it'll fit the bill. It should be here on the same day as my MBA. I couldn't have planned it any better.

They have a cool 360 view that really shows how thin this bag is and also has compartments for some docs, adapters, etc. Check it out.

I've read all 94 pages of this thread to help pass the time before my MacBook Air makes its way into my frozen Canadian hands (it's been -45 here in Winnipeg for the past few days so I am especially bored being trapped inside). It's been really fun reading about everyones pre-order experiences and I thought I would share mine with you: I ordered my MacBook Air (1.6/80) about 12 minutes after the store went online. Here's why: Apparently FedEx in Winnipeg operates on a skeleton crew during the weekends (no deliveries done), so I asked if I could come by the office and pick up the MacBook myself. Nope. Apparently the delivery done on Friday night isn't even sorted until Monday morning!!!! So now I will have to spend the whole weekend twiddling my thumbs KNOWING that my brand new MBA is sitting in a warehouse at the airport!!!

Okay, my sob story is over. :)

I've been calling the regular Fedex customer service line and they say they can't upgrade me to Saturday shipping - that it has to come from Apple. I remember some mention of a special Apple/Fedex department. Can someone post that number? Thanks! :)

First impressions:

1) The machine is definitely quick (base model). I've never experienced a significant lag, or anything bouncing on the dock more than twice.
3) As everyone else has mentioned the screen is beautiful!
2) My AT&T USB Air card works perfectly. Sits in the USB slot when the MBA is on a desk without a problem.
3) Quality and build is impeccable.

Other than that -- nothing. No complaints, no gripes. I'm in love. :D

Would echo these statements, keyboard action is also lovely (although this may be no different from other Macs, I've been using Thinkpads for far too long...) mine was waiting at the office today but it's crazy around here so I don't have time to add much and the photos are poor quality I'm afraid. Don't think Apple will be using "it's thinner than the Journal of Immunology!" as part of the sales pitch...

oh, one other thing - based just on the music at start up, don't think the mono speaker is going to bug me, sounded fine (not that I'm likely to use it that much)

'Tis 12:54PM on Friday, 1 Feb here in Arizona. FedEx will arrive in a couple of hours with the MBA ethernet dongle...really useful at this moment. Apple status order page reports that my MBA has shifted to "Prepared for Shipment". I ordered the MBA 1.8 SSD with iWork pre-installed at 10:40AM PST on 15 Jan. I would think it will be here before next weekend as it will probably catch a Saturday flight to Alaska. Original ship date was 6 Feb to arrive 11 Feb.

Wednesday, I modified my order to include a MBA Superdrive that should ship by 22 Feb to arrive by 26 Feb. :rolleyes:

Those that "have received their new system", enjoy! The rest await their turn with great hopes of "sooner" than "later". :cool:

FedEx rocks! My Superdrive and ethernet USB adapter for my MacBook Air both just showed up.

In a fricken ice storm, 130 miles round trip on ice and this FedEx guy shows up as if it's a summer afternoon. I think many local roads are closed in about 21 counties right now. There's half an inch of ice on everything. We're not long 'til some power outages if a promised temperature rise does not occur soon.

The FedEx driver said the company gives them strap-on boot covers with cleats for when the ice gets "really bad." Yeh, and how about some strap-on bucks in the paycheck? Probably not. Well anyway FedEx sure rocks today, I haven't even gone out for the newspaper. Bravo FedEx!

All that's missing now is the book itself. I'm ready to bake something delicious next Wednesday to make sure my little airhead machine feels welcome when it arrives. That "something in the air" will be baked rice with cinnamon, vanilla and apples!

Hot d@mn! Between being entertained by all the whiners talking about Apple "lying" about MBA availability (yes haters, it's two weeks to the day when the first was delivered from Keynote) and checking my shipping status, I've really wondered whether I need to head over to Crabtree Valley Apple store and take my chances on getting an MDA, cancelling my online store order when I have it in my hot little hands!

Apple must be prescient! :) Just checked and my 1.6/80 CTO (with a Remote) is PREPARED FOR SHIPMENT! YEESSSS!

I ordered mine 1/16 at 3:09 PM PST and had the normal Feb 6/Feb 13 delivery. Looks like it's going to be sooner than that!

Off to Southpoint or Crabtree Apple stores to pick up my Superdrive for my Boot Camp XP installation.

This is a great community. Everyone enjoy theirs!

Not really a review, just random impressions so far

I agree with everything being said, amaing build quality and design, I'm carying mine around all day with a leather portfolio, I oftne forget that I'm carrying it......

Wonderful keyboard and screen. Compared to other macs they are good, compared to most PC's they are great, compared to other ultra-portables they are miracles......a joy to use

For the person that asked: the preloaded software + Office 2008 (full install) left about 51Gb free on the 80Gb drive, would leave ~35 Gb on the SSD drive, all things being equal....

I am intriuged what may (or may not) be Apple's, deeper, longer-term plans for this platform. I like how it came in what was essentially a wider longer iPod box, same internal design and materials. For me it reinforced the notion of this as an accessory to our other computers: a more transportable carryalong with 80% of the capability of our major computers, perfect for running from meeting to meeting, or airport to airport. With the usual things I do during my work day (surf websites, read and reply to email, review and edit documents) the speed was peppy (I have the 1.6/80), never noticed much lag. Would I use it for heavy-duty photo editing, or hard-core gaming? No, but I've never used any lap-top i've ever owned for those purposes, only my more pwerful and much less transprotable desktops.

The use of shared disk drive for loading software was very straightforward: I loaded Office 2004 then upgraded to 2008 in about 20 minutes.

So , so far wonderful machine for my needs.

First impressions. The box is heavier than the machine itself :) but it's the nicest packaging for a Apple product that I've ever seen.

The laptop itself is very nice. It was very cold when I got it but that's because it's been traveling in an unheated plane container and truck when I got it. I've seen lighter laptops but this is the thinnest I've held. It's almost feels like holding a legal pad as if you could carry it with you all over the place. I was afraid of it being too thin where I could snap it in two, but it's not that fragile. Just think of a macbook pro that was flattened.

The latch on the side snaps up and down and it's a lot less visible than I thought. The magsafe adapter is strange since the locking part is cylindrical rather than rectangular than before.

The keyboard itself feels like the macbooks rather than the macbook pro.

Trying to figure out how to use the remote disk is a little more challenging than I was expecting. The manual says to go into the sharing preferences and enable the CD/DVD sharing, but I don't see that option on my macbook air. The Disk sharing software that you're supposed to install on other computers is on the disc 1 of the backup disks you get which is a little disappointing because I don't want to be carrying that disc with me anywhere since it's so valuable.

Lots of updates to run as it wasn't updated with the latest iTunes and the security update.

Oh the lid closes like the macbook and doesn't really have a latch like the MBP.

I ordered the USB ethernet adapter but nothing worthy to note.

Anything else you need to know?

i dont' think there would be yellowing as it's metal instead of plastic that the macbooks uses

Might want to check on that and make sure that your're not wasting your money. I tried this a couple of times in the past and both times FedEx said they had to have Apple's permission to deliver on a Saturday.

Does anyone know of a good backpack to buy for the Air? One that has a compartment in it for the laptop? I saw a cool Oakley one and it came with an oakley sleeve as well for the laptop itself. Im a student and also from ireland so if u know of any site or even a type of brand or a name or anything that wud be great!! They have to ship to Ireland too!! I wud get the oakley one but my friend has it already so i dont wanna get it!!!

On the case subject: I had one of these briefly for another laptop, and I see a version (size 6X) fitted exactly to the MacBook Air is about to be released. They also sell backpacks that this clips into.

Great protection in a semi-rigid (corrugated plastic + foam) sleeve--with handles, shoulder strap hooks, and a sling cushion to protect the bottom edge from drops. I don't like big cases--especially for an ultraportable--but I do like maximum protection. This is small--one big side pocket, no other nonsense--and I liked the construction of my last one.

Might want to check on that and make sure that your're not wasting your money. I tried this a couple of times in the past and both times FedEx said they had to have Apple's permission to deliver on a Saturday.I dont pay unless its here but still planning on Monday :)

I don't get it... I ordered the same thing BEFORE you at 1:30pm PST (1.8/SSD), but it's still showing as "not yet shipped"! It still reads ship on Feb. 6! What's going on, and why can't I be more patient!

I was under the impression that the only time that my order would change is during working hours in China. This morning sometime between 8-9 am EST, my MBA (1.8/SSD/no iWork or other "stuff") went to "Prepared to ship". I ordered it at 5:42 PST on the 15th.

Does anyone know if they are flying things out on Saturday?

Hopefully, this will get to Alaska sometime this weekend.

I have YET to find one in CA that the seller will send a picture of (with a $20 bill on it for verification). I've been stood up 3 times with cash in my hand at a location. VERY peeved at the moment.

For the record, I ordered mine on the 16th, at about 6am PST. Still "Not Yet Shipped," but Apple does seem to have initiated a charge on my card for the full amount of the laptop.

Stay home, call your mom, say hi, rent a movie, play it on your old fashioned Powerbook so it won't realize the depth of your intent to betray it early next week. Fix up your playlists. Order pizza. Go work out.

Played some music through the speakers and it's not great. It sounds like playing music through the speakerphone of your cell phone, or maybe like playing music off your Macbook pro but it was missing one speaker...

lame... but not a big lost for me anyways.. but kinda predictable i guess since it's only a mono speaker
i rarely play my mbp speaker

i'm more curious is how easy is it to access the drop down ports on the side.. is it fragile and feel liek it can snap off?

i ordered at 11:50 am the day of the keynote and i haven't moved past the "not yet shipped" stage. someone mentioned if you ordered with iwork preinstalled that it might hold it up.

Got mine this morning before 9am. Ordered literally right after the keynote (after we filed out of the room, went down the escalators and got to a seating space... went online to order... when store was clogged, we called 800-MY-APPLE and placed a phone order.).

It's awesome... only downside... no WiFi at work (policy)... so I went to the Apple Store during the day to purchase the USB ethernet dongle.

I've already ordered one from sfbags.com (WaterField). They are great, they are custom, and they have one that will fit the MBA.

I recently ordered a WaterField Sleeve (http://www.sfbags.com/products/sleevecases/sleevecases.htm) case, and it arrived this week. It is the best case out there... 2nd time purchasing from them (had it for a MBP).

I'm kinda of sad though... I have the case now... but no MBA yet!!! I did a custom order and Apple says Ships Feb 22, Receives Feb 27. Does anyone think I might get it earlier?? Maybe the Apple Stores will have them in the morning?!

My MBA was updated to "Prepared for Shipment". Still reads Ships by Feb 6, Delivers Feb 12.

My SuperDrive has been shipped and left TN.

I just purchased the Waterfield Sleeve.

Question/Concern-
My current laptop is a dell- plastic on the outside. The Air is aluminum. I am very concerned about dents! Any comments about how protective the sleeve is (I will be putting it in a leather messenger bag that has very little protection)?

most likely more than 1 pallet of air (heh) were on that flight out and somehow ours got split during loading.

I'm with you. I don't get the obsessive need here to get the Air right now at any cost or inconvenience, but I suppose if these guys have the money and time to burn... :rolleyes:

I think I am going to be the last to get my Air, and I was one of the first to order... Mine is still stuck in Shanghai.

I believe mine is still there too. The most recent tracking shows "Left Origin" in Shanghai.

I called Fedex a few times today. They can give a little more information such as: we are in a pallet of about 400 Air's and will probably not go out until tomorrow. I was also told that it would be around Tuesday/Wednesday when we get it.

for those who had "overnight" shipping and received your macbook air, did your package go straight from alaska to your relative location...or to Indy or Memphis first?

has anyone thought about how they are going to protect their new shiny toys? i use a marware cloth to shield the screen from rubbing up against my MPB's screen - do you know if the regular macbook sized ones will fit the Air? any other leads about protecting the trackpad, keys, etc would be much appreciated!
