I just chatted (4:45PM on Monday 4 Feb) with the IP Direct Distribution service rep at Fed Ex. Due to the Chinese New Year, my shipment on 2 Feb around 1:46PM China time, along with countless others, have not even been placed through the process of exiting Chinese customs let alone been put on a plane for Anchorage. By my FedEx website status report and verified by the aforementioned service rep, there has been no shipping activity for over 48 hours. The skeleton China based ground crew is getting just a few items out each day. :eek:

I could loose a week while the Chinese play. The target delivery date (6 Feb) is already missed. I may to divert the unit to some other location as I leave Saturday on a trip. I may need to suggest that Apple extend their warranty on my equipment, which they started on the invoice/shipment date. Nuts! :mad:

i wanted to videotape my attempt, but the bosses were at the office today.

call me anal, but for the shrink wrap i cut out only the bottom section so you'd still be able to separate the bottom half from the cover. i even went so far as preserving the tape that's on the magsafe adapter! :D

Got back from Jacksonville a couple of hours ago and am finishing up setting up my new MacBook Air! :D

Yes! They got in 10 of them when I called this am and I asked them to hold one for me-5 hour round trip plus I lost out on my $100.00 discount from Apple online store and my gold box discount on Amazon, but it was worth it just to be able to walk out with it and have it right now!

Sweet machine! Congrats to all who have theirs and to those who are still waiting-it's sooooo worth it!!

if you feel it's too expensive and not worth the price tag

yup, another good point.

see, my current MacBook is my desktop computer. to go down in processor power wouldn't be my cup of tea. but like many have already mentioned, the MBA isn't intended to be a desktop replacement anyways.

Its fast and so far the battery is lasting forever!!
Also had a mix up with my order at the apple store online.
The manager called me back and made everything right
Apple continues to have the best customer service I have dealt with!!
For those still waiting trust me it will be worth the wait!!!!
I slimmed down the programs with xslimmer and monolingual
removed garage band and idvd and installed iwork. I have 43G
left over.

The SSD MBA will likely be faster than your SR MB for many day-to-day tasks. Of course, it will fall flat when it comes to specialized, processor-intensive applications (like games), but the SSD MBA will speed up practically every function in between.

Someone in another thread made a Lotus Elise comparison and I think it fits -- it may not do much over 140mph, but it can keep up with practically anything below that ;)

Here's my shipping situation:
Ordered the standard model on the 19th, but elected to have Final Cut pre-installed. This made it a custom config. My ship date is Feb. 12 with an arrival of no Feb. 18th.

Here's where it gets goofy. So after thinking about, I decide to get the superdrive and an extra power brick. The superdrive had the same shipdates as the air; the power brick's dates were even later.

Power brick is now due to arrive tomorrow, superdrive "pre-paired for shipment" and probably going out tomorrow. Air still marked "Not Yet Shippped." In the meantime I read in another thread that Christiana had them in stock - about a half hour drive from here.

Guess I'll plug the power brick in tomorrow and pretend.

If you are paying $3100 then you are purchasing an SSD. The SSD will beat your C2D MB any day. :rolleyes:

I was really upset about the lack of shipping progress since 2 Feb when I got the Apple shipping/invoice notice. The ordered 1.8 SSD iWork was just sitting there at the Pudong airport and had not even cleared outbound customs or been transfered to the FedEx ground crew to put it on a plane.. Still no updates to shipping at 11:25PM Arizona time. Just for grins, I called the Chandler Apple store to see if any MBA units had arrived. They had a 1.8 SSD in stock, the remaining unit of ten MBAs that came in today. I put my name on it and an hour later (about 7:15PM Arizona time) walked out and am now typing on it. I will wipe the drive in a few minutes and reinstall the OS without all the languages and print drivers. FIW. The Gilbert San Tan Mall Apple store still had several 1.6 HDD units in stock around 5:30PM Arizona time.

The little fan was running for awhile, but I think it downloaded all the updates in the background while I was typing. I am using the ethernet dongle now.

The packaging was a first class deal. Almost hate to dispose of the wrappings. :rolleyes:

Really pleased with the look and feel of the entire system. Seems very quick to me. I think the SSD is the ticket for a portable as travel vibration is a non-issue. The metal has a very different tactile feel than the MPPros. Almost sensual.:cool:

If the other unit gets here before I leave on a two week trip this Saturday, it will be set up for the UK. Otherwise, if I don't get to sign for it, it returns to Apple and I get to go through this ordering ritual again in March if I want the developer discount. :(

so i've had my 1.8 80gb for 24 hours now, and i have to say. im very impressed, and i do not regret making this purchase at all.

this will be my only laptop/computer for the time being until i get an imac in the summer, and for my needs (email/web/itunes/office) it is more than just fine.

only one drawback so far has been running office 08. a tad bit slow loading, or maybe it had to do with the fact i was syncing my ipod.

but all in all, its amazing.

I ordered mine on 1/16 9am [1.6G/SSD]. I am sure that it will not arrive on the 11th as it will not ship out till the 11th. If it does not ship by Wednesday Shanghai time, everything will close till the 10th night. As a result, it will only ship out on the 11th evening 9.55pm flight!

woot woke up checked this morning my air is in Vancouver!! just arrived at my local depot! i called up fedex right away hoping for a pickup on my way to work since it's like 5 min away from me.. and

I just received a call from Apple (a three-way call with a customer service rep and the man I placed my MBA order with).

Apparently, when I requested an upgrade to next-day (by e-mail, which was granted and "on the house"), the request was called in but not applied properly. So as an apology, they are crediting me 50 bucks, which rocks as I didn't pay extra for the next-day request anyway.

I then proceeded to ask them if they knew the status of my computer, and they said it left Shanghai this morning (although this isn't reflected on simpletracking yet), and that I should receive it by Wednesday or Thursday.

I hope they're right, but either way, thanks Apple for the free $50!!!

Apparently, when I requested an upgrade to next-day (by e-mail, which was granted and "on the house"), the request was called in but not applied properly. So as an apology, they are crediting me 50 bucks, which rocks as I didn't pay extra for the next-day request anyway.

I then proceeded to ask them if they knew the status of my computer, and they said it left Shanghai this morning (although this isn't reflected on simpletracking yet), and that I should receive it by Wednesday or Thursday.

I hope they're right, but either way, thanks Apple for the free $50!!!

woot woke up checked this morning my air is in Vancouver!! just arrived at my local depot! i called up fedex right away hoping for a pickup on my way to work since it's like 5 min away from me.. and

Guesses.The expedited shipping only makes a difference once the item is actually shipped; Apple won't rush the item through their system any faster just because you pay for expedited shipping. What you are paying for is for the shipper (FedEx, etc.) to move the package along to you more quickly once they receive it from Apple.

Mine arrived in Anchorage on 2/2/2008 at 10:54:00 AM.

It was delivered on 2/4/2008 at 10:24:00 AM, 2 days before the estimated delivery date.

I ordered the express delivery. My apple shipping notice said that it would arrive on the 6th. The Fed/Ex shipping site had a delivery date of the 12th. I called Apple support....asked about it, why the difference...she was very nice, banged away on her keyboard, looking stuff up, then told me that she was sorry it looked like it would be the 12th. Said there was nothing she could do except refund my express shipping costs. I thought that was weird...I assume anyone could ship overnight from Alaska....it's not a foriegn country right?

Many have reported early delivery...I hope nobody knows what's going on and they throw it on a plane send it to a sorting center...toss it on a truck and it arrives early. I ordered at 12:59pm on the day of the keynote.

Go figure. I really don't think I'll preorder again...I'm may be slow....but not stupid. This is my first mac, I've learned my lesson....next time I'll just wait and go to the local mall....it's 5 minutes away.

I'd have to agree--it's really unfortunate that the planning for manufacturing of the MBA didn't go well; at least, in terms of the delivery and fulfillment of MBA pre-orders. [I ended up going to an Apple Store to score one myself; pre-order through Amazon, when I knew I should have ordered through Apple directly.]

Still no activity on the FedEx website today until around 6:00PM Arizona time when I noticed the delivery date move forward from the 6th to the 11th. I think the original unit is still in China. Chinese New Year and bad weather stopped the FedEx show. There were no text updates showing the unit had passed through out going customs into FedEx loader"s hands.

Anyway, after many transfers between FedEx and Apple personnel, we decided the unit will bounce next week after three delivery tries and be returned to Apple. They will attempt another shipment in 7 to 10 working days after that. I should be back in country by then.

Have reloaded OS X twice on the MBA 1.8 SSD (I got it from a local Apple store last night) due to a hiccup on the first reload. I omitted unnecessary printer drivers, languages, and optional software and gained about 8Gb of drive space, showing nearly 47Gb available for whatever. I tried using wireless on file transfer and the ethernet with the dongle was faster going through the same 801.n Airport Hub that was three feet away. The Superdrive was definitely the way to go to load programs. The unit feels snappy on doing installation work and moving files around from iDisk etc. Most of the time the fan is silent. I think whoever gets one will be pleased with all aspects of this computer keeping in mind all the constraints.

I installed the Verizion USB WWAN modem drivers for a test drive. It worked fine for an internet connection. However, with no printer available because of only one USB port, the only choice is to print to a pdf file and print the document out later or on a remote printer. I small powered mobile laptop USB Hub might solve that problem. iDisk access is really slow over the Verizon connection.... Musical chairs with three USB devices while loading is tedious. Under normal situations, one would load from a CD/DVD using the Superdrive and then switch the connection to ethernet/wireless to check for updates. One will want their system printer to be on a Airport USB hub or ethernet so one can use the USB/ethernet dongle if their wireless connection is slow.

If you are waiting and your order still says Not Yet Shipped, cancel and go to a store. I did, and they had all the accessories and three different models in stock (1.6/80, 1.8/80, and 1.8/64SSD). It seems that there is a pretty good pipeline that is sending daily shipments to the stores. My store said that yesterday was the first day they didn't sell out, and that they had about 5 units each come in the last two days. (this was a store near Atlanta)

I'm in the same boat as you Captain...everybody I've talked to from either Apple or FedEx has said it's either on a plane, or on one in the next few hours...but for some reason I am skeptical. I asked the last FedEx person I spoke with if there would be any delays in Shanghai due to New Year's or weather, and he said no...I'd like to believe him!

The one thing I think I know is that the order status won't update until it is scanned in Anchorage, so hopefully there will be change in the morning!

Yeah, from some of the pics you might say I'm crazy, but I'm just pretty excited about finally getting my first Mac. I've been looking at them for a couple years, and decided this was the one to start out with.

As far as likes and dislikes....
It's crazy thin, as you are well aware of. I love everything about it, it is built solid, doesn't flex at all, as you might think a thin laptop would.

The only gripe i have is that the case is actually borderline too smooth. I feel like I could drop it because it might slip out of my hands when I'm holding it by my side.

If you're at all contemplating springing for one, do it now!

PS, i'd have gladly paid full retail for it, but as it is, i saved about $700 on it through EP Discount, lol

Oh, if anyone is good with networking, I'm struggling with my wireless. I have a DLink Wireless Access Point and 2 Windows Laptops running wireless as well as a number of Windows desktops hard wired in. The Air is online, but now none of the laptops will connect to the network. I also can't see any of the computers from the Air or the Air from any of the computers (however last night I could access my desktop from the Air) Any help is greatly appreciated.

The peace of finally ending the game...been sleeping like a baby every since! FORGET THESE MARKETING GAMES!

I'll never go through something like this with apple again! I am gravely disappointed to be treated like this!

I sold my mac book to make room for this MBA I'm typing on over 2 weeks ago and lost quite a bit of productivity..my own fault yes but I thought I'd at least be told when they'd hit the stores! I never thought it was a classified national security event!

Well after having vented I do love it...though it's recognizably slower than my former blk.macbook... I loved it and it took a design this innovative for me to let it go!

There are no 1.8/80GB configurations available in stores. That's an online BTO option only. Stores only carry two models: HDD and SDD, period. :)

Between the MBA and the gf on Valentines Day, I'd go with the MBA. Valentines Day happens every year, but your first night with the MBA only happens once.

I ordered on the 21st and my original ship date was Feb. 12th. With no prior warning it was prepared to ship, then shipped on the 4th. Now I have projected delivery date of the 12th, but I doubt it'll take a week once it hits the states in a few hours.

I wouldn't be surprised if you got it a few days early. I do believe that someone here ordered on the 28th, and it's already in the states!

If you live in one of the urban areas good luck with that. Macbook Air has been sold out in both of the stores in New York City since the day it came out. Apple is not very good at estimating demand in their outlets.

I can't say I blame you. I really whined when I saw my initial ship date of the 11th.

However, my computer actually shipped on the 4th and I got it today. I so did not expect THAT to happen! (I ordered the 16th of Jan, by the way.)

My guess is if you call Apple, they will tell you that they can't give you a sooner ship date and they promise to make the one that you have been given. When I ordered they said two to three weeks for shipping.

In all likelihood, it'll ship sooner. And if you call them you can change your shipping option to something a little better. But I don't think they'll actually budge on the ship date that is posted at the moment.

What a FUBAR roll out....really, unimaginable.

FedEx showed up at the house at 4:09PM this afternoon, 6 Feb. So they did manage to get it here on the original delivery date in the Apple shipping notice. I may have even had the expedited shipping fee refunded by Apple. Glad this experience is past. best of luck to all the rest awaiting their dream laptop. :D

Well today I called up and got a rep at apple and when asked about any updates on shipping and the conservative estimates that the website gives. He instantly hung up on me. JERK.... so I called back and asked to speak to a supervisor.


I told him the situation and how it was BS that I could get my Macbook faster from Amazon then Apple. He was very apologetic over the situation, almost overly appologetic, like he has been giving this speech ALOT. When I ordered the Macbook originally I was plainly told that the ship date was a conservative estimate and I could expect it sooner. Well sooner has come and gone and I was a little upset. They gave me free over night and a free USB Ethernet dongle for my troubles!!!

Its not my macbook in my hands, but its a nice start.

They didn't have any updates for me, never mentioned anything about New Years or production issues, but would they say this even if they knew it? I doubt it!

My MBA went prepared to ship 3 days ago. I had hope because the superdrive and ethernet dongle shipped yesterday. Got up this morning expecting to see it shipped and the ship date had just gotten pushed back 3 weeks. Now says ships Feb 29, arrives March 6. Called Apple, they had no explanation, and they sent me to the Edu unit. The new rep was just as clueless. Anybody know how to get to somebody that knows what is going on?:mad:

My MBA went prepared to ship 3 days ago. I had hope because the superdrive and ethernet dongle shipped yesterday. Got up this morning expecting to see it shipped and the ship date had just gotten pushed back 3 weeks. Now says ships Feb 29, arrives March 6. Called Apple, they had no explanation, and they sent me to the Edu unit. The new rep was just as clueless. Anybody know how to get to somebody that knows what is going on?:mad:

For what it's worth, I've called called Apple and Fedex dozens of times
and have never talked to anyone who told me anything useful or did anything to help.

Mine will probably arrive Friday. Unless it gets held again.

well that doesn't make any sense to me...it's ready to get shipped but this will take another 3 weeks? :eek: i really hope my ship date won't be pushed back....

I think the extra 3 weeks means they shipped the one on the loading dock to someone not from the edu store. So my $100 savings means I'm at the back of the line. It's crazy because others here are getting $100 credit back when theirs don't ship before their scheduled date, so they get the same price in the end. The lesson here seems to be don't order new products from the edu store and don't order the software installed (iWork).

I would cancel and try to buy locally or from a reseller-- the EDU discount isn't that much...

On top of that, they want a 5% restocking fee for returning a custom ordered machine. So I didn't get the iWork this morning but its going to cost me $86 to give them back a machine that has $39 worth of extra software. This is no longer the computer company that I've been buying stuff from for the last 20 years.

Excellent advice..there is always a big YMMV when it comes to customer service...

I have returned OPENED MBP to Apple and not been charged restocking or return shipping, I think it all depends on who you get & what your reason is for returning the computer. Based on the fact that you have not even opened the custom order yet, you have a strong argument for not having to pay a restocking fee.

Found out that each institution has a rep in the Edu division. Called him and it looks like he can work it out on the return without a restocking fee so this saga can finally end. Now if I could only get the remote disk setup to work, I think I'll enjoy this machine.

I hear ya. I ordered mine 17th Jan, so a little later than some of the early-birds, but in all fairness I should have received mine before others who ordered after the 20th Jan, and definately before any of the softies who went and purchased at a reseller. Pre-order = privileged. But I live in Australia (land of the backwards-people), so I'll be lucky to have it before the end of the year.

Man, these EDU orders are annoying --- made mine for a 1.8/SSD back on the 22nd. Watched other folks get theirs shipped and the local Apple store with plenty of stock.

Meanwhile, I head off on my second business trip next week and no Air :mad:.

So I called my EDU rep and she swore she would try to give it a shove --- Eureka! I get a shipping notice... for the USB ethernet adapter only.

Grrrrrrr. If it doesn't arrive by late next week in time for my 3rd trip I'm canceling and sitting tight. I really only need it for travel.

Frustrating.

It is EXACTLY what I thought it would be. I've been waiting on Apple to come out with something like this for a couple years now, so those last two weeks didnt really seem so bad to me... I've been playing with it for a day now, and still havent found anything to complain about. Well worth the wait.

I ordered a bunch of things (along with a MBA, of course!) on the 17th January, and upon checking Apple.com today the status of my order has finally changed to "Prepared for Shipment". Everything, that is, except Applecare...Hmm.

Question the First:
If the "ships by" date for the whole bundle is 15th Feb, will this likely be moved forward now that most stuff is "prepared for shipment"?

Question the Second:
Has anyone else here had their Applecare lag behind other items in their MBA delivery?

Hope someone knows.

I ordered a MBA 1.8/80 and I've been following this forum for the last 2+ weeks just like everyone else. Just like a bunch of you, my MBA left Shanghai on Feb 4th and scheduled for a "Feb 12th" delivery (which is wrong).

Well, to make a long story short, it arrived at LAX on Feb 6th early in the morning. The tracking results had not been updated since it left Indianapolis so I called FedEx. They told me it would be out for delivery Thursday Feb 7th by 10:30am. It never came – called FedEx and they said it had not been updated since it arrived at LAX. They tried to run a "trace route" and they cannot locate it. It's now being "researched" by the lost and found dept. I think it's lost and found its way into someone's trunk.

I called Apple and they were very supportive and helpful. We'll see how much so if it is confirmed "lost" by FedEx.

This is frustrating beyond the pre-order vs. pick up at the store scenarios others have mentioned here. It may be another 2 - 3 weeks before I even get my MBA!

Hope it doesn't end up that way.

Apple is definitely very good about handling lost/mis-delivered packages, both for purchases and for repairs. My iPhone that was sent back from the repair depot somehow ended up in Louisiana, and after maybe two calls with Apple (one to them, one back from them) they had a brand new iPhone on my way - they make sure they had all the necessary information, so that they could be the ones to entirely handle the situation, and the new iPhone was shipped out that same day.

Just make sure to stay on them and they should get you squared away - of course the problem in this situation is that the Air is in short supply. If this was say, for a normal MacBook, there'd be a new one on the way to you immediately. The air... not so much. =(

My MBA was prepared to ship for 3 days, and shipped for 2 more days.

Don't know about Applecare. I do know that none on the online Mac shops even have it listed.

Alright, I freaked out about the Applecare slowing down the rest of my MBA order, but it turns out that the Apple.com website just takes time to get things through. So now it's all together, SHIPPED (!) and ready for delivery by Monday. Schweet, mate!

For those still keeping track, my 1.6/HDD MBA ordered about 4 hours after the keynote, went prepared for shipping on Feb 5 and then changed to "ships Feb 29/arrives March 6", just got delivered to FedEx today on Feb 9 to leave on Feb. 10. It will be returned when it arrives because I picked one up at the Apple store on Feb 7. Don't know what it tells you about later orders except that Edu shipments have a very low priority.

Because my superdrive and ethernet cable are still on a truck crossing the Southwest US, used remote disk and wireless migration to set up the machine. It took about 3.5 hours and I gave up on the clean install because I could never get the MBA to boot from the remote install disk. I'm sure that I could have eventually gotten it to work but my old 12' MBP had only a 40 GB drive that was not full (29 GB) so I decided to just get the move over with. May redo it once the ethernet and superdrive arrive.

The machine is beautiful.

Well I ordered, on the 23rd of January @ 11pm EST through the edu store. I have been waiting and dreading the rumors that EDU orders are low priority and checking ten times a day to see if order status has been updated.


Just got home and checked it and BANG, PREPARED FOR SHIPMENT. Hope this means I will get it before valentines days so I can actually play with it.
