The airline adapter wont work with the MBA because of the angle that the connector forms with the surface of the MBA. That angle is almost perpendicular with the table surface and would put gigantic amounts of stress on the cable. However, Apple released a universal adapter to address that issue.
Are you sure? My understanding was that the airline adapter (mine is almost a year old) would work with an MBA.

It would physically connect, and should work fine, but from what I can see of the MBA's power socket location, you'd have to raise the machine up about an inch or so on something like a book to not either be bending the cable at an immediate near-90 degree angle or knocking the plug out of the socket.

It will still work connector, voltage and amp-wise. However, because of the stress that would be put on the cable at the point where the cable locks into the adapter it would eventually break the cable off. The same thing happened with my guitar cable and with 4 pair of ear buds I have owned over the years. So maybe I misspoke by saying it wont work at all, but while it does work it wont work for long.

Think people are lying about the shipped status?
Anyone whose got one thats shipped post a screen!
No they aren't lying. Apple can control exactly what date your products arrive, short of mechanical failure during transport. If Apple tells Fed-EX/UPS/DHL that the product is not to leave the distribution center until a certain date then that is what happens. So theoretically they could already be in your town waiting to be delivered to your house, Apple just needs to give the courier the go-ahead. At least that is how I understand it to be.

OT: Why do you have the MacBook Air your ordered as a 'ultra-portable MBP' in your signature? The 13.3" screen and gargantuan bezel nearly as wide as the 15-inch MacBook Pro so it isn't ultraportable and I don't think that the glossy screen or integrated graphics merit it as a professional machine.

It was just used to annoy the "professionals" lol.
I personally think it can be called an ultraportable MBP, not by specs, but by design, SOME features and of course price / apple's intent.

I had a small check to see if the displayed shipping time on the online store had decreased at all, which it hasnt. The Air's were released a week today and it said 2 - 3 weeks, so I had the slightest hope that it would say 1 - 2 weeks now but clearly it doesnt, ahwell :)

To be honest, I don't think that the statements of some members - regarding the question if the macbook air is already shipping or not - claiming their device is already shipping is true.
I have ordered the standard 1.6ghz 80gb as soon as possible after the keynote (I think my macbook has a number starting with MB003... which could indicate that I was the third who ordered the macbook air) and my Order Status still hasn't changed from "Prepared for Shipment" to "Shipping".
But I expect this is subject to change within the next few days.. *me bumping up and down*

The "MB003..." has nothing to do with how fast your ordered. That is the model number. Mine is MB003LL/A. Just thought you might want to know. :D

I have to agree. I placed my order at 10:50 PST the day of the keynote. My cc was charged today but my status is still "prepared".
The MB003 is a portion of the part number. The last 4 digits would indicate your order in the line. I am 18x.
No one would have it in their hands without payment being processed first.

[QUOTE=sosnow;4809445]Does anyone anticipate long lines like the iphone for the MBA. I am planning on going to my local Apple store as soon as I read someone on this forum has a shipping confirmation. But I am wondering what this group thinks about the demand and if it will be immediately soldout.
Any thoughts on the demand/stock outs in stores?

I don't think any product unless totally new for Apple will have long lines like the iPhone. Though of course if they underestimate demand, then there will be problems.

i think its safe to assume it will not be like the iphone. It all depends on the supply levels as to how easily you can get one, so it might be hard to get if there are low supplies. I think you will be safe if you go shortly after opening once there is word they are in stores. I'm looking to do the same since its not worth while ordering it this late.

Most definitely, the iPhone was a totally new hyped up product that Apple just started. Although I think the MacBook Air is going to sell like hot cakes, its one of several kinds of Apple notebooks. iPhone version 2 I am sure won't be like the event iPhone 1 was.

I just found this forum/post, and I must say, i'm pretty excited about the mba. But while we're all waiting for them to arrive at our doorsteps or the stores that we ordered them through, I'm wondering if anyone else got a good deal when buying their new MBA or did you pay full Apple price for it? Just another way to pass the time.

Better to have prepared to ship and not ship than to have not yet shipped at all.
Mine was always not yet shipped. Maybe now I can relax a little and not check the status every 15 minutes wondering why it has not been prepared to ship.

This has got to be some sort of mistake. "Prepared for Shipment" would imply that all the shipping labels were on the boxes and ready to go out. What did they did, open everything and send prep the boxes for the Apple Store instead of us? Doesn't make sense.
Or, maybe the original "Prepared For Shipment" was the mistake and we got our hopes up for nothing.

I am watching so many forums right now I do not remember where I saw this, but someone was speculating that 10.5.2 NEEDS to be released before the MBA's go out.

aight, why don't we put it like that: the first macbook air's were ready to ship, then macOS got a major update (presumably 10.5.2) and they decided to update the macbook air's. this means, after the update (a few hours maybe?) the beauty's will be shipping, so I indeed also think that they'll ship very soon..

The Apple online store knocked $100.00 off when I called to cancel my order a few days ago. I was cancelling because I had decided to order my MBA from Amazon instead (which is where I usually get my Macs unless I need a custom configuration). Amazon would still be cheaper by around $30.00 dollars because of the no tax and I have a $25.00 credit, but I figured that I would probably get my MBA quicker if I ordered from Apple. I still have the Amazon order in place-whoever ships first, gets my business!
One thing about Amazon that I love is they have a no hassle returns/exchange policy as well as a price adjustment policy for 30 days, so if there's any problem at all or price drop, they'll take care of it with no issue-great CS!

This is a bit OT but for you MBA purchasers, I just did a comparison of specs between all the portables and the MB and MBP both have battery life of 6 hrs. (maximum time) but the Air's battery life is listed as 5 hrs. wireless productivity.
1. What does wireless productivity mean (in comparison to "maximum time")?
and 2. How does 5hrs make this a better portable machine than the MB or MBP?

OMG. If that is correct, the MBA battery time will be about 15 minutes.

My Macbook gets about 2 hours 20 minutes of run-time with wifi and bluetooth on. I can dim the screen almost all the way and get about 2 hours 45 minutes.
On the macbook page it says 6 hours depending on use
I'd imagine the macbook air's will get about the same if not slightly more (due to the LED backlight and slower spinning hard drive).
The macbook air pages say 5 hours, but they say that a lot all over the place and are proud to admit that number; therefore I would suggest the macbook airs will get 3-5 hours.
Once I get mine I'll do some tests.

No wonder they want to wait and ship until 10.5.2 is installed, it is 380MB. No better way to highlight the fact that you do not have the option of a wired network connection than when you turn on your new toy for the first time and see an hour long download waiting for you!!:D

As far as the hours of life is concerned... I thought I read somewhere that the 5 hours was for usual productivity suite... web, spreadsheets, etc. but that watching a movie it would be reduced. Isn't that what the productivity disclaimer is about? OF course WiFi, BT etc. would also impact, but the implication of what I read seemed to me that the 5 hours included having WiFi on.

No wonder they want to wait and ship until 10.5.2 is installed, it is 380MB. No better way to highlight the fact that you do not have the option of a wired network connection than when you turn on your new toy for the first time and see an hour long download waiting for you!!:D
Huh? 802.11g is about the slowest internal wireless networking standard you'll find today. Even that can move 380MB quickly. You'd obviously be limited by your internet connection to your ISP. At that point, it doesn't matter whether you're using wireless or wired internet.

I just cancelled my online order. There's no way it will be in my hands before it's in the store, absolutely no way. Two weeks from the Keynote is next Tuesday. I don't have a tracking number. I don't care if it's drop shipped from China, Taiwan or Mars, it won't be in my hands tomorrow, Thursday, Friday or Monday.
I'm paying tax on it regardless so I might as well walk 10 blocks up 5th Avenue, put my hands on it, then decide whether or not I want to buy. My EPP discount applies there too. There is also no shot in hell there will be a rush on these like the iPhone. Not even close. We're talking a $1000 difference in price and a PC product, not a consumer electronics product.
I think you'd all be smart to do the same and cancel as well if you're within reasonable distance of an Apple Store.

I do agree though that there will be plenty of inventory and no need to rush. Especially in NYC where you have a couple stores to go to.

you're making an assumption here that the machines will be in stores within 2 weeks of the announcement, which is just plain stupid. there have been plenty of times in the past when the number isn't accurate for shipping OR stores.
it's more likely you'd receive your machine about the same time they appear in stores... making an assumption they'll be in stores no matter what within 2 weeks isn't a good idea.
now when they don't appear in stores and people start receiving them early, you'll feel a little foolish.

Apple realizes that the pre-orders are "strong" as noted in the conference call earlier this week. These are some of Apple's most loyal customers and I don't think they would really screw them over. Also, there is really no way of knowing when the stores will be getting them in.
I personally don't care whether or not the stores get them first. I would rather have it delivered it to me than worry that the ones that shipped to stores would be sold out. Also, the closest Apple store is more than an hour drive for me.

Don't beat up on him too bad, the idea of waiting until you can actually touch it does have it's merits. Besides, my bet is that those who paid for expedited shipping get them the day before they are in the stores and the rest of us get them a couple of days later.

he wasn't saying he canceled because he wanted to touch one in store first, he was saying that they'll be in stores guaranteed next week because it has been two weeks since the keynote, which is stupid.
as everyone knows, apple's "shipping in xx weeks" is rarely every accurate, and basing an order cancelation on it is foolish.

Please, I may be a newbie on here but I have been an Apple user for nearly two decades. Several times I have placed pre-orders and the item was well stocked instore before I received mine. Most recently I believe this happened with the first video iPods.
And excuse me, did someone say Apple isn't going to "screw the early adopters?" How about I waited in line to buy an iPhone on 5th Avenue (though thankfully only for a few hours) to find out that they had thousands upon thousands of them, way more than enough to meet demand. Oh, or how about less than 60 days after I dropped $600 for the phone, they drop it $200. No, Apple never screws the early adopters.

The machines are all sitting in China waiting for 10.5.2 to go gold. That goes for Apple Store units and those being drop-shipped to those who pre-ordered.
As for the iPhone, everybody knew that The Apple Stores in NYC would have plenty of stock. If they hadn't, Apple would have screwed themselves.

First off, as early adopters we all got what we paid for. Apple did not force us to fork the $599 for the iPhone, I gladly paid that amount knowing that was the price. They said it would be released on June 29th and they delivered. Whoever complained about the price drop after the fact dumb for doing so IMHO. Price drops happen in the consumer industry, and they happen faster in the technology industry. Albeit the iPhone price drop was unprecedented, Apple had every right to do it. At the time of purchase we as people who wanted the latest and greatest gadget knew that it costs $599 and we didn't get tricked into buying one. I have no regrets whatsoever about buying the phone at $599, it was the cost of owning it first, not Apple screwing over the early adopters. It was a bonus for them to give us all a $100 rebate. Just saying.

It will definately begin new threads. Such as, Unboxing Videos, pics, problems, likes, dislikes, etc.
OT: love the pun "post partum depression" :)
I think there are plenty of those now and most of them from people who have no need for the MBA. I'm sure there'll be even MORE of those once people get them. It's unfortunate but that's one thing the human race does well, b!tch at everything myself included LOL :D

I almost got mine with my education discount as well, but then I saw my price that I could get it for through work, which couldn't have been accurate, but I jumped on it anyways. I ended up getting the air for the same price I could have gotten the white macbook for. Just wondered if anyone else got a sick price like that on theirs. Now I'm just sitting and waiting like everyone else for it to ship.

All true. I think an IQ test is needed for people to own and operate keyboards from now on. Too many people complaining about being an early adopter who gets "screwed". That's how the technology world works. Their is always newer and greater things to come out, and as it progresses the older technology becomes less in value/cost. And be greatful that the people who are complaining got $100 store credit. Steve Jobs could have just laughed and said, "Screw you all"
But that's just my view.

While it would be great if there was some sort of speed bump, it would be highly unlikely since these chips were designed by Intel for Apple specifically, and also since the delay in shipping is a matter of two weeks, not the month or two lag time between the keynote and the original MBP release. However, I would not complain if you were correct :)
My order (placed within 5 minutes of the keynote) also went from "prepared" to "not yet shipped". While patience is a virtue, I am excited for the arrival of my new machine!

I personally would pre-order now. I have always gotten my Apple equipment faster by pre-ordering than waiting for the stores to receive stock. Exceptions are those announcements (like the June MBP update) that were available immediately online and in store.
If your local Apple store gets stock before your order ships, just cancel your pre-order.

I understand this and I wish the Airbook had a slightly smaller footprint. But, let's not get too sentimental. The 12" PB was a slow as molasses and the screen was, by today's standard's, just awful. And I think it was about the same price as an Airbook. We might have preferred a smaller screen and associated footprint for the MBA, but my gawd, 4 years ago if you had offered a 12" PB user an MBA instead: he would have grabbed it - might have missed the footprint, but not the brick-like thickness, G4 speeds, dull display (and the short batt life).
I have not yet decided whether to get an MBA - I have a bunch of Macs these days - will check it out in store this weekend :) But, I suspect the performance-robbing thinness will be hard to resist...
Question - someone mentioned the airline adaptor: will the adaptor for my MBP not work with the MBA?
Agreed. The 12" Powerbook was a glorified iBook. It never got much fanfare due to it's slowness and limited ram options, no backlit keyboard or ambient light sensor and no PC card slot and the GPU was subpar at best. Now that the Air is released and essentially the replacement of the 12" people are acting like the 12" was a revolutionary product since the lightbulb when in fact the Air offers a lot more.

Umm, and just how did Apple actually screw their customers or YOU for that matter? Let's see, a new revolutionary product announced for June 29th was released on schedule, plenty copies supplied to the retail stores to meet demand, so many copies available at the Apple store that Ebay sales of the iPhone were slow due to Apple's overstock. Hmm, sounds like you screwed YOURSELF by waiting in line.
Apple told no one to wait in line. That's YOUR fault. :p

I liked the 12" iBook and PB. They were small which made them great for high school students (which I was during production) to use in class and travel with. After a few minor 3rd party adjustments they were a pretty cool machine. I never owned one myself but have borrowed them many times from my school to take to school competitions. However, I also noted the shortcomings mentioned that wouldn't make it necessarily a Pro series. The MBA still rules though.

There is an dashboard widget aptly named "OrderStatus" which will give you updated tracking information for all your Apple purchases (if you're like me, you're waiting for new Apple releases frequently, selling your barely used "newest release" every few months). I've attached a screenshot; I think if you don't already know have it, you too will find it indispensable. (you can get it here, http://www.dashboardwidgets.com/showcase/details.php?wid=1468).
So, back to cold, hard facts; does anyone else have status and tracking to pony up?

Question to those of you who ordered the 1.8 and SSD:
Does your Air show up as a CTO order?
I stupidly one-click ordered one with iWork pre-installed. Then realized that the less customization the better (in terms of getting it faster), and so I deleted that item and then put one-clicked another which was just a 1.8/SSD with default options.
But it's listed as CTO. Is that the case for all 1.8/SSDs?

I will order mine ASAP as soon as I convince my parents that getting a product first gen is not bad!!! :D:D
I disagree, I bought first gen MacBook Pro, a month (or so) later they dropped the original 1.8ghz and bumped it up to 2.0/2.2, so I went from top to bottom even before I got mine! :) Then bought iPhone 8gig 2 weeks after it came out....then the price drop!!! I still feel a little cheated.
**/end sob story
But ill wait 6 months and it will be up to 2ghz or more with a 160gig drive. That I could go for

Mine ships on February 12th, arrive Feb 18th.
I bought the 1.8 SSD model.
It was $3,200 for a secondary laptop. I am nervous about this purchase because I am not sure the trade-offs--notably the lack of replaceable battery--will make the size worth it.
But I fly to Asia monthly, so hopefully not having to lug a 17" will be worth it. Fingers crossed.
Either way, I am excited to try it out...

Either way, I am excited to try it out...I am also nervous about this too. I ordered the same as you and am a little concerned about how sturdy a notebook this thin will be. I am VERY easy on my notebooks but am worried about how this might handle being placed in a softcase. Still I am looking forward to getting it!

OK, jackass, let me explain for your simple mind. I am an early adopter. I want the iPhone first. So I uproot my life to go wait in ****ing line for several hours when THEY HAD MORE THAN ENOUGH IN STOCK TO SATISFY DEMAND. I understand the need to drum up a buzz but I was really annoyed to have been jerked around like that.
Yeah. They shouldn't have had enough. They really screwed us by being so prepared. Apple never suggested they had shortages nor that anyone should stand on line.

Hey I am in Ocala, and I ordered before you lol
I would like to be wrong, but if they were shipping there would be a lot more posts about order status change.
I believe that:
1. The OS Update needs to be finished. I doubt they are updating the systems but it needs to be released before they send out the new laptop.
2. That they wanted the "release" to be tomorrow and it still might happen but depends on #1.
3. That the systems will hit stores at the same time day 1 people see shipped.
4. There is a small possibility that due to demand they could delay 5 days to let the manufacturing lines produce and Q/A additional systems to meet demand.
5. We (including me) all suffer from a compulsive disorder and need therapy and a sedative.
Thanks.. Mean while things I am doing while checking the order status page:
1. Read a book that you have read before so when you loose your place by thinking about your MBA you can start in any spot.
2. Paint the bedroom a shade of a aluminum so you can pretend you are inside your new MBA
3. Get a new pet Gold Fish and name him "MacBook Air" so you can use MBA in everyday conversation more often.
4. Clean up room where you will be unboxing your MBA by installing an air/dust filter so it will be protected wen it arrive.
5. Shop for bluetooth enabled items to use for the MBA, such as a mouse and speakers. Then return them telling the sales person you where not sure they will work, and then purchase them again
6. Talk to co-workers about how the MBA is today the thinnest computer in the world but you are prepared for the day when that changes, its just you really like Mac's and its going to cool to have that 3rd laptop to carry around.
7. Clean out a closet so you have a place to safely store the MBA box and keep it safe. You could optionally install an air filter in the closet to make the box more comfortable.
8. Practice answering the door, just in case you are home when the MBA arrives. Make sure you have good manners so they delivery guy won't change his mind and "come back tomorrow". This is good idea to role-play with the kids or wife/girlfriend.
9. Spend time moving all your files to a backup disk and then pic what you need to put on the MBA and put in a "Ready to move" directory. Think about color coding the files.
10. Drink more coffee and cola so you can stay awake longer just in case your order status changes so you won't miss that event.

I'm not trying to call anyone a liar, but shouldn't it take more than 2 days for a laptop to go from China to Florida? China to Florida is like a 20+ hour flight, isn't it? Factor in stopping for customs and changing FedEx vehicles, I find it very unlikely this person is getting their MacBook Air on Friday. I hope I'm wrong though.
I'm also putting my money on the fact that SuperDrives and USB ethernet/modems will ship the same time as the laptop.

Well you may want to check your facts first as the MBA itself weighs 1.36 kg. So add to that product packaging, charger, other studd, plus shipping packaging 4 kg is perfectly reasonable, where as 0.4 kg (the weight of half a loaf of bread/ or 3.5 lighter then the actual product) is not.

Just curious, but how would you have the information to check directly with FedEx? The tracking info was wiped out on the screen shot...also, it doesn't make sense that they would be shipping software from China. Too, the Apple order status clearly states the the MBA was shipped on the 23rd.

Tracking based on what's in the image, there are more items that shipped at the exact same time from the exact same place: 9:16 AM from SHENZHEN CN. They all have package weights of 0.4 kgs. I'm tempted to order an MBA but wonder about a couple of things. Given the somewhat unique processor used I have to wonder what we might see in future versions of the MBA - minor speed bumps or ??? It also seems obvious that prices for SSD drives will drop substantially with increased adoption, or at least that capacities will grow. What do y'all see for the MBA down the road ?

I am a hour away from him and every one of the many i had this year took 5 days from china :)

I think you are going to find that the external superdrive needs to be connected directly to the MBA.
I already know that, I'm saying it's just gonna sit on top of the time capsule until I need it. :)

The point (the ONLY point) is that MBAs have not begun to ship yet. Otherwise, I couldn't care less about roberts and his order.
Same goes for me. I just don't like people posting BS and getting everyone excited when it's not true. Sorry if it's a buzzkill for those who are already excited seeing a shipping confirmation.
It took very little effort to check it out. Definitely not the most important thing in my day though. :)

Keep in mind that China (Shenzen county) is a full day ahead of the US, and that FedEx package pick-up time is based on Local (China) time.

My 24" iMac shipped directly from China this past October and was here in 3 days and I live in GA.
When I called Apple to change which credit card I was using to pay for the MBA, I asked about the shipping and was told it would be shipping from an overseas facility. My shipping date is Feb 6 with delivery date of Feb 11th. I paid the extra for faster shipping so wanted to know why its 5 days to deliver, their answer was it is 2 to 3 business days for delivery. Dang weekend. Geez never thought I would say that!

Yes, mine shows the order as CTO. My config:
1.80GHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/2GB
64GB Solid State Drive
No iWork Preinstalled
No Final Cut Exp Preinstalled
No Aperture Preinstalled
No Logic Exp Preinstalled
Keyboard/Mac OS

Ahhh, nice set up I'm jealous. That's the one I want to order. Time Capsule was all I could buy for now. :)

I would like to be wrong, but if they were shipping there would be a lot more posts about order status change.
I believe that:
1. The OS Update needs to be finished. I doubt they are updating the systems but it needs to be released before they send out the new laptop.
What does the new OS update have to do with the MBA?

It will likely go Shenzhen (next to Hong Kong) to Anchorage (precleared for customs there) and then directly on to florida or I guess via Memphis. That was the way my past Apple orders have worked.

I believe that just about everyone's ship date will change. Based on what I've seen here and my own order, the ship date is 3 weeks after the order date. This syncs with the promise of 2 to 3 weeks.
While I don't believe anyone's has shipped yet, I do believe it is imminent. All the big sites released their reviews yesterday and based on Apple's previously releases, the product hits store shelves within a few days.
The reason why all the reviews come out the same day is because they are embargoed. Apple sends them the equipment early with their commitment that they won't publish until Apple says they can. Apple wants the reviews to be out just before the product as part of their grand marketing plan.
I'd be surprised if they didn't ship by Sunday (or Tuesday at the latest as that is 2 weeks). I'd also be surprised if every order wasn't shipped the same day despite what your ship date states, because if they'd already sold out, the Apple Store wouldn't still say 2-3 weeks.

Excellent analysis. I believe this scenario to be the most likely one. I expect to be able to walk into an Apple Store on Tuesday and leave with an MBA.

This is partly due to the time difference. They are 13 hours ahead and across the dateline. If you fly back direct you actually can basically arrive when you leave.
I actually have gone to Shenzhen (alas not to visit Apple, most of whose stuff is hidden away in places like the Foxconn compound) and so am always mindful of this.

Yeah. Also with the shipping times, it will typically come faster. The cost is the same when sending out from China. If it has to go, it has to go. There are only 2 issues: 1. Occasionally there is high demand to send stuff out of Shenzhen and people with discounted volume rates may agree to delay normal shipments on more packed flights for a few hours or a day as part of their price discount. 2. Slightly slower delivery from Fedex depending on how you asked for it to ship. (But in a way, they are still sending by plane and so it is almost like they choose to slow down as an excuse to charge people more for a good - a classic "price discrimination" marketing strategy for Fedex).

Just noticed that Amazon lists the shipping weight as 7.2 pounds.

So, Uncle Walt is saying you cannot install Windows wirelessly - you have to have the superdrive. That's a problem if true. What about a disc image on a USB-connected external drive - might that work? Any thoughts?

I'm not sure about Final Cut Studio, but why would you want to use a MBA for editing in FCP?? I've got my 17" MBP for editing in the field and while at conferences, I've got a brand new Mac Pro coming to me for work. I do a lot of video editing and graphic work, and needed more power. I've been pushing my MBP to it's limit's. Now for school work, general papers to be written, email, and general day to day stuff I've got an MBA coming to me.
So has anyone else seen there's as having been shipped yet?? Also I've got the 1.8 ghz with nothing added on or any custom configurations, and it's telling me that it's CTO. Any ideas???

I am pretty sure it will not run on a MBA. I am pretty sure that one requirement is a dedicated video card.
