That sucks. I pre-ordered thinking that I would get it before the stores.
No point in pre-ordering anything online anymore.
UNLESS, (while farfetched) Apple could of secretly shipped them already and are being held at the FedEx station for a delayed delivery on tuesday. Apparently the stores got them in on friday.

I think the only purpose of pre-ordering is to guarantee you a machine.
You don't have to go to the store with the possibility of the machine you want being sold out.

I called this morning to upgrade my shipping (before I read the posts here, it's just something I had been meaning to do). They upgraded me for free, but my order status still says (Feb. 6/Feb. 12).
For those who were upgraded today, did your ship/delivery dates change to reflect that?
yes, I tried this the other day and spoke to brandon, he never did it then spoke to someone else today and yep they even sent me a update letter
Hello S. Gambino,
Thank you for shopping at the Apple Store online. Your order was
successfully updated. If you requested any additional changes to
this order, you will receive an email confirmation for those changes.
We will let you know by email after each item in your order ships. If
you ordered multiple items, you may receive separate shipments with
no additional shipping charges. Visit Order Status at
http://www.apple.com/OrderStatus to view your order details and track
your shipment.
Best regards,

I called back and found out that my shipping wasn't changed this morning after all.
"It says here that you were offered the faster shipping, but you turned it down."
The person who changed it tonight said that sometimes the customer service reps realize that they don't know how to change the shipping. It looks like I was told I'd get faster shipping this morning, but she then realized she didn't know how to do this so she put in a note saying she offered it, but I turned it down.
It was taken care of this time though. My order now shows a ship date of Feb. 6 (no change) but the delivery date is now one day earlier, Feb. 11.

I've ordered almost every Apple item I own the day it was announced and I've never seen it in the stores before my pre-order was filled. The only thing I waited in line for was the iPhone cause they didn't do pre-orders.
I would be VERY surprised if EVERYONE who pre-ordered one didn't get it the same day it is available in stores.
Apple is very good at coordinating these things, even Leopard and Tiger showed up at my door (and everyone else's) the same day it was at the store.

Guess you will be stopping in here (http://www.apple.com/retail/alamoana/week/20080127.html).
Netdog, Didn't even think about the store in Honolulu, actually I had no idea.
Thanks for the tip.:)
My wife, Barb, and I will actually be staying on Kauai. Best condo deal in the islands.
So if the MBA doesn't arrive at my home I can pick up one at the Apple Store.
I'll just have to convince my wife that I need to go to Honolulu, to um visit Pearl Harbor that's it!.

I think part of the problem is that the first impressions of this machine (most of course from people who haven't even seen or touched it ;) ) are very black-and-white. Either it nails your demographic head-on (my situation) or the choices (e.g. "omissions" according to some) that Apple made rendered it impossible for your personal situation. Those who *really* wanted a subnotebook within the latter group are the most vocal MBA-bashers.
I think the pundits are a bit caught up in trying to make sure that the MBA will be sufficient for potential buyer's needs and are trending towards the conservative. Hence somewhat silly articles like the above. Somehow I highly doubt that SSD prices are going to *crash* in the next year.
My guess is that things will moderate once the machines are out in the wild and real people will start using them and posting their impressions.
Meanwhile-- I hope that Apple is about to ship a bunch of these to the pre-order folks, otherwise there are going to be massive cancellations of on-line orders. I would be shocked if the stores were not well-stocked, that would be a very un-Jobs-like screwup.
Looks like we'll at least be able to check them out soon.

I honestly believe that pre-ordering does not mean that you are supposed to get units before the stores do. If you remember when SJ introduced the first Intel-powered laptops in Macworld 2006 he said the following:
"We will be shipping in February, we are taking orders starting today, if you want I suggest getting your orders in early."
By this he only meant that if you want to guarantee yourself a machine, thats when you would pre-order. I can recall that the very first day I heard of people getting their MacBook Pros on their doorsteps, I was able to briskly walk into an Apple Store and walk out with 2.0gHz MBP under my arm.
Rarely has Apple offered true "pre-ordering" behaviors. The only one that I can truly recall is when they were selling the new aluminum Bluetooth keyboards. Plenty of people received their units, and I was not able to buy one from an Apple Store until 2 weeks after I heard of the initial pre-order deliveries. When the iPhone Bluetooth earpieces came, there were plenty of people who pre-ordered, but I along with some other people were able to walk into a store and get an earpiece, while those who pre-ordered sat there and waited. Proof in my thread unboxing and reviewing the bluetooth earpiece.
Recently, Apple has also offered another kind of "pre-order" opportunity, and that was with Leopard. The only ones who DID receive Leopard early were those that were lucky enough to have a FedEX courier that did not obey the "don't ship till..." stickers. Jobs gave a specific date, and almost all of us pre-ordered.... did you guys really expect to get it any sooner than the day of?
Apple does not practice true "pre-order" behaviors because they don't give exact dates. The only reason they pre-order, aside from a great marketing scheme, is because they cannot guarantee sufficient production and cannot predict manufacture delays (i.e - Intels Penryn delays). The only companies that I know that practice true "pre-order" behaviors are videogame stores. The reason for this is because they actually take money from your hands, and give you a date when you pick up your game. And, if the game is hyped up enough, will even open at midnight so that those who get pre-orders can pick it up and play it right away, leaving the regular consumers to have to find them later in the morning. Does Apple offer you any of these special treatments when you pre-order? No, because they know a pre-order doesn't mean jack other than you'll eventually get one.
I honestly believe that those who pre-ordered don't really have any truck to demand units before the stores get them because Apple doesn't even take money from your hand or give us an exact date of when they'll be shipped. The only thing Apple takes from you is an authorization to your credit card, and the only guarantee they give you is that you'll be refreshing that shipping page like crazy like we're all doing.
So whoever is moaning of what's the point of "pre-ordering," you're getting exactly what its supposed to be, a guarantee you'll get a unit, no special privileges of being a "faithful Apple fan" or an "early adopter."
If you want to pre-order something and get some special treatment, go to EBGames and reserve a video game, maybe you'll be special and get a free "I Reserved Halo 7!!!" t-shirt
Just wait.

Yes, very lucky. She lets me feed my Mac Passion. I remember 3 years ago when i got my first Mac and she kept her Dell. After 2 weeks of "discussion" I got her to try a Powerbook. Told her give it 2 weeks and she'd never go back to a PC. The first few days were tough. Her biggest concern being that closing windows was on the opposite side on a mac but after two weeks she kept it and now you would have to wrestle her Mac away from her. She loves it. Does more on it than I do, pictures, movies, all of it.

"pre-order" does not mean that you receive the item before other customers. It simply means you commit to the purchase before an item is in hand to sell. pre-orders are or at least should be filled before offering units to the general public. I work for an online collectibles retailer and 80% of our sales for items are on a pre-order basis. it is just a good way to order something in advance so you wont have to worry about hunting it down when it is released.

As of 7:50 PM, no change in shipping status ("not yet shipped"). As of store closing tonight (6PM), the sales people at the Apple Store "hoped" for Tuesday shipment, but had nothing to confirm one way or another-though they seemed optimistic.
would it be possible/likely that ship thousands of units to the US secretly? Given the 13 hour or so time difference in China, etc. what would happen? At the instant of shipment all of our status notices would change at once? I would like to get my chubby fingers on my MBA on Tuesday, but we are getting close to the wire for that to happen without a change in shipping status.
Any thoughts on that, fellow posters?:

They're not going to ship it secretly. This is not some massive coverup that Apple doesn't want you to know about. I'm sure there are plenty of Airs in the United States already. Many will probably go to stores next week.

I'm looking at the Tom Bihn Empire Builder bag, does anyone have any suggestion's or advice. For my MBP i've got a Brenthaven, and short of not having enough room to fit my school books in it's great. I'm looking for a bag that'll allow me to keep my MBA in it, organize my folders, and keep my school books in it all at the same time having a sexy appeal to it. What do y'all think???

Agreed, once the MBA hits the streets people will buy it and love it just as they did when the iPod mini came out. Just before it's release people bitched and bitched about it being $249 and they could get the full sized iPod for $50.00 with more features. When the mini hit the streets it was one of Apple's biggest selling iPods ever.
Ignorance is bliss. This is the same situation about very ignorant Windows PC users. They talk trash about the Mac before even trying it out and then for some reason we see more switchers after they've played with someone else's Mac.

MY AMAZON ORDER STATUS... I ordered the base configuration 1.6/80 from Amazon about an hour or so after Steve's keynote. I received an e-mail confirmation at Tue 1/15/08 12:00 PM Pacific. The current status below hasn't changed since my initial order:
Shipping estimate: February 11, 2008
Not Yet Shipped: 1 item - delivery estimate: February 18, 2008 - February 22, 2008
REPRICING TO GOLD BOX PRICE... Also, I wonder about an earlier post regarding a Gold Box 5% off deal. Has anyone tried to get their purchase price readjusted due to the Gold Box deal? If so, when did you have the deal and when did you get the price adjusted?
SLEEVES AND CASES... I eagerly await my MBA and currently consider sleeves from Wrappers (wrappers.typepad) and WaterField. My main concern with Waterfield is my poor experience with my Titanium PowerBook (Gigabit Ethernet) sleeve, which seemed loose for my taste. I believe that a tight fit will be crucially important for the MBA. With my 12" PowerBook, I had a Shinza sleeve, which I loved but eventually stretched over time. Any opinions? Any other cool cases on the market?

We've had some three WF sleeves in my family, two for MacBooks and one for a SZ-series VAIO and all fit absolutely spot on (especially if you fitted an MacBook into the VAIO sleeve :D), so maybe yours was just a Monday unit? But I do agree, a tight fit (especially thickness-wise ) will be an issue with the Air. That's why I'm anxious to test if my ex-MacBooks WF Sleeve will be an acceptable fit for the Air or will it be too loose.

Back on topic.
If anyone wants to know if there is order is actually in the process of getting ready to ship there is an easy way to find out.
If you ordered from the Apple online store, simply check your order status and then click the 'cancel order' button (DONT WORRY WE ARE NOT CANCELING YOUR ORDER) it will take you to a confirmation page. However if your order is ready to ship you will get the error message that you can not cancel this order. If you are able to cancel the order and choose one of the reasons from the drop down menu then your still no closer to shipping :)

I think that you have to re-order the item to get the gold box price and cancel your original order. To me, it was worth it...even if I have to wait a little longer...as I'll save a little over $200.00 with the tax figured in. I ordered over the weekend and cancelled my order with Apple. My delivery date estimate is March 27; however, it will ship way before then per Amazon CS as that's just a blanket date they give until they get their first shipment in. I've pre-ordered a couple of Macs from Amazon and normally they ship within a week from when Apple ships, regardless of the date they give you.
Of course, you could try and talk them into giving you the gold box discount anyway-never hurts to ask...good luck and let us know how it goes! :)
UPDATE: From the Amazon goldbox help page: Gold Box Quick Picks coupons cannot be applied to orders already placed with Amazon.com. So it looks like you would need to re-order :(

I was at an Apple location over the weekend, picking up my aging PB from Applecare, and the head Genius said "the 1st week of February" for in the stores and gave sort of "cannot confirm or deny that they are already sitting in the back of the store waiting to sell"...
My bet is that they have already been shipped to the stores, which is causing the rumors, but that they do not appear until the 5th or 6th.
I'll be in Manhattan tomorrow morning on business, as soon as I get out of my meeting I will be calling the 5th Ave store. If they are on sale then I will have to take a later train ;)

Apple, come on already and ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I called Apple Customer service to try and change my shipping to overnight and it was a no go, since I have a custom configuration it comes from China and 2-3 days is the fastest shipping method. It sounded like non-custom MBAs are possible already in the USA however. I am sick of carrying around this 7 pound Dell Monster (my company bought it not me)

Also has anyone else tested out Office 2008 Exchange Compatibility?

I live in USA Northwest corner. ;)
Ordered my CTO 1.6 GHz MBA w/SSD via phone on Jan 19.
It's ship date is Feb 12 and delivery Est. Feb 18.
Also ordered the 1 TB Time Capsule and it's ship date is Feb 29 with delivery Est. Mar 6.
Will be comforting to be able to see MBA in person prior the my ship date just in case I wish to change my mind and Cancel out. ;)
I also wonder if Leopard 10.5.2 will be released in time for supporting the MBA and the Time Capsule.

Has anyone else considered how to deal with Active Directory authentication without support from your Lan Admins?

I'm a LAN admin for AD and Exchange by day so I might be able to help.
AD is simply a central authentication system that provides single sign on for AD clients. You can still access resources from your Mac, you'll just have to authenticate each time. You can save time by storing your credentials in keychain. You'll have to have a windows computer to sign into in order to reset your password if your environment requires it. If there is a Terminal Services or Citrix server, you can do it from your mac by signing into one of those servers using the appropriate client. MS Terminal Services and Citrix, both have good Mac clients.
As for Exchange, you can use Entourage. Exchange is licensed per user and as such each CAL (client access license) includes a license for the client software. Whether your Exchange admin will admit it or not, a copy of Entourage comes shipped with every Exchange media pack. If he doesn't want give it to you, find it online and rest assured, your company owns the license.
If you don't want to use Entourage -- which works pretty well -- then you can use Mail.app and Address Book which work ok if IMAP is enabled on the Exchange server. Address Book will even sync with your Exchange address book out of the box. The biggest missing piece is calendar, which you can buy a 3rd party plug-in (Groupcal) or login to OWA whenever you want to send or accept apointments.
The nice thing about using Entourage is it syncs with Address book and iCal so it makes it much easier.

Apple does have the nicest people on their phones. She said 2-3 days to get to US, then can overnight. She can't control the shipping part to US.
She upgraded for free once I suggested that some of the people on this websites were getting it comped...
Everyone should try. She said they will ship before they sell in store. Obviously that doesn't include shipping time (at least that was what I perceived from her).
I don't yet see the upgraded shipping on my order status. It still says Ship by 2/6 and deliver by 2/12.... Maybe it will change later

You guys act like FedEXing your packages is so cheap. Overnight shipping with major couriers is super expensive and it adds up when impatient people like you nickle and dime them.
Apple gave you guys no specific date on when you should get them and you start whining and demanding fre overnight shipping. its because of your rants for free crap that makes patient people like the rest of us have to take the hit for other nonsense charges from Apple like ipod touch upgrades and wireless n activators. Admit it or not, those opportunities to gain lost revenue.
I just find it hilarious how people think they deserve special treatment due to loyalty. its like when people demand free stuff from cell phone carriers because they pay their bills on time.. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO!!!

I would guess that the few who actually get "overnight" live in California, those of on the East Coast could never get it from China overnight since both UPS and Fedex send everything going East through Indy or Memphis first for usually a full day.

i just got off the phone with someone from the online apple store - here is what she said to me (take it for what its worth):
1. the apple stores have to order products from the online store just like any other cutsomer
2. the air's will be shipped to the stores and to us on the same day.
3. they are not doing overnight delivery because their comming from china (i live in nyc).
4. the fastest they can deliver it is 3 days. so three days after it's shipped it will arrive (wether it be the apple store or your home).
5. there is no way it can be in the stores this wednesday because they haven't shipped any yet.

I actually asked how much it would be to upgrade to overnight and she offered it to me for free. I didn't ask her for it. Also, I am not an "iPhone-halo- noob." In the grand scheme of things, I'm a relatively new user, but I got my first mac (iBook G3 700MHz 256MB RAM and 10GB 2nd Gen iPod) in 2002. This was before the iPod really hit it big.

I just spoke to an online Apple rep as well - slightly different story again - she said because I've order a custom config (1.8/hdd) that 2-3 days shipping (from China) is best she can do - she also stated that if I had ordered a standard config (I assume she means 1.6/hdd or 1.8/ssd) she could have upgraded my shipping to next day - I guess this means the standard configs are in the states already???
Still patiently waiting........

I recall that when I ordered my MBP (15" 2.16 Core Duo) in '05, I think it was, that it came from China and went to a FedEx distribution center in Alaska and avoided FedEx/Tennessee completely. I thought it was interesting that stuff from China would go through Alaska and get here as quickly as it did; I believe that it took less than 2 days.
That was with expedited shipping, to Houston TX.
The only customization on my MBA is having iWork 08 preloaded. My status page currently says ships 2/06 and delivers by 2/11.
We shall see, shall we not?

Yeah, I've had nothing but problems with my current macbook pro's screen. I got it a year ago, and two weeks after buying it, I already need to have the first display replaced. But, even the replacement has been showing signs of early aging, and I baby this thing. I'm hoping that the LED display on my MBA will not prove to be as problem ridden as this clunky thing.

I just got off the phone will Apple. The first support rep stated that she couldn't change my 2-3 day shipping to overnight. The second rep gladly told me that she changed it. To confirm, I called a third rep who said I was credited $18 for the 2-3 day shipping but no change had been made because the product is shipping from China to the U.S.
Question - in my order details, my Macbook Air says that is a CTO Custom Configuration. I ordered the 1.8ghz, 64gb SSD, with a superdrive, ethernet adapter, and Applecare, nothing else. None of the reps could explain why my order was CTO. My best guess is because I ordered it through Education, but do any of you guys have any ideas? Also, a reason for not being able to get the Overnight shipping may be because mine is CTO and coming from China?

The CTO reflects the addition of the superdrive, ethernet adapter and Applecare. Anything that is not strictly the computer turns the order into a CTO.
I've got the same problem. By adding the remote and the ethernet adapter, it turned my order into a CTO. Oh well... :o

I need this thing delivered now, I hate doing my papers in the computer lab.
I hope they get shipped today around 4-6pm.
If they dont, they might be shipped on wednesday... and if its not wednesday... it will be on the delivery dates that were given to us.
It would be a total pisser if we had to wait all the way until next week. I don't see how you can do work in the computer lab. I sold my computer, too, but I'm not giving it up until I get my MBA and Time Capsule.

@ illian:
no idea when the MBA will hit the German market. My Apple Premium Reseller (based in Cologne) told me last week that they expect arrival within this week (until Feb 1st) but not sure on this. The guys at Gravis told me the same story.
I'm not sure if it was a smart move to cancel my online order (Feb 5th / Feb 14th delivery) and switch to my local dealer.
But let' see... a colleague of mine is in NYC near the 5th Ave. store until Thursday.

Not sure why people from NYC or other high sales tax locations are ordering from the Apple site when you can get it from Amazon and not pay sales tax. Saves $150.
You can also follow a known procedure to get Amazon to put the MacBook Air in your gold box and get a 5% discount. That saves you another $90.
If Apple is true to form, they will stuff the sales channels all at once and differences in delivery dates will be measured in days...

Normally in a production environment you would know in this period that 2 weeks was 2 weeks. Any production related issues would have been detected and addressed (e.g. some sealant doesn't work, a part is loose).
In fact, they would have already started a production run prior to his speech and so unless they had a major glitch and had to literally tear those units open, they would have some ready.
They certainly would want to start shipping in limited quantities, if for no other reason that a lot of working capital is tied up in things like those SSDs.
So it might be more an issue of wanting to have really large volumes to go to the stores so they do not sell out quickly, but who knows.

Like fed ex better the UPS, they are idiots!
Really? I've probably received about 150 UPS packages over the last year. Only one has arrived later than expected. 20%+ arrive earlier than I paid for.
Fedex has never delivered a package early. Usually they arrive on time.
DHL packages are almost always delivered late to me. In fact, I can't think of the last time DHL got anything to me on time.

Exactly - as Mac becomes more and more popular with the "masses", sites like this cannot be looked at as a barometer for product-adoption.
Almost everyone I know (my wife, some friends) that will buy the MBA are not on these sites...
If you believed most of the posts here, you'd think they would hardly sell any at all.

Called one of the Seattle area Apple stores over lunch. The guy I talked to said they didn't know when they would be getting them in, but it's usually the same time as you would get one if ordered online. I asked if they were carrying the SSD and he had to ask a co-worker. I could hear in the background "as far as I know we are just carrying the base model". He also said that they get packages in big unmarked boxes, so they often don't know what or how many they are getting until opening the box.

Then again, if Apple wouldn't be so vague, they wouldn't have this problem.

I think the concentration problem is because you keep thinking about the MacBook Air lol. I know I have been having issues. I sent a client an email instead of just letting them know their package will be in the mail tomorrow, I wrote: Your MacBook Air will be in the mail tomorrow.

That might work. But most likely, since the air is thinner than the normal macbook, it is going to flop around in there. You can maybe lay some material inside to give it a more snug fit. I personally bought the Brenthaven ProLite I and velcroed some of the edges for my ordered Air.

Only reason I'm asking is that my Powerbook G4 is pretty much on its death bed and the DVD Drive does not work anymore, and even if I replaced it it wont work because the side of the laptop is severely damaged. Don't ask how. lol
Either way, my next laptop after the MacBook will definitely be the MacBook Air.

Looks like only stock configs getting "prepared for shipment" - I ordered at 10:41am on the 15th - my 18/HDD still "not yet shipped". If in fact the Apple stores get stock of the 1.6/HDD, do you think there would be a noticeable performance difference from the 1.8? Looks like apple is updating order status in terms of original ship dates. Sounds like everyone with a ship date of Feb 6th is getting there status changed to "prepared for shipment. Can people please confirm this by posting there original ship date when there status changes. My ship date is feb 7th and so far nothing has changed.

I'll mostly be using for travel and light office work stuff - email, web browsing, itunes, etc......
thoughts?
Nope nothing you will notice.......

Same here, last time our status' changed on the 19th to 'Prepared for Shipment', they didn't take the entire amount out. This time all of it came out. Last time they pended just $14. Not sure why it was $14.

Not everyone. I haven't seen anyone with the 1.8/SSD that had their status change. My ship date is Feb 6 and it still says "Not yet shipped".

I went for 1.8ghz and 64 gb SSD. I bought it yesterday and it ships by Feb 19th. I really hope it actually arrives earlier! (Should have bought earlier but I was debating...)
Ditto. Apple Enterprise put the order through just this morning unfortunately. Ships by Feb. 19th as well. Hoping a stream of them come down the pipeline soon!

I wonder if I should just cancel my Amazon pre-order and go in store. Gosh I wish I knew what would be first.
It will ship out faster than you think...hang in there! I cancelled my order with $100.00 off from Apple online b/c I got an even better deal with Amazon...but it will be worth it!

I guess I might as well, I can always last minute cancel if they happen to be in stores staring at me.

Although I ordered mine on the day of the keynote, got the student discount and my status just changed to "Prepared for shipment" I decided to at least order the goldbox deal from amazon.com to save $100.
What do you guys think, Amazon.com estimated March 28 as their shipping date.. will it ship earlier? I strongly hope so..

Yes because its morning in China. Unless of course its like a per day basis where orders are prepped to ship in the mornings and thats it for that day.

Has anyone with a SSD been charged or had had a status change?
I ordered 1.8 SSD within 2 hours of the keynote.
My order says CTO not shipped yet ships by Feb 6. Though it's a standard MB Air with SSD nothing else ordered with it or changed.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but with all the blizzards going on in China, it is highly possible that the shipment of Air will be delayed. And don't forget it is the Chinese new year in the early Feb and the earliest day people will go back to work is around mid Feb, so it's possible the Air won't hit US till the end of Feb...

I know this is the "waiting for the macbook air" thread, but I couldnt help answering his question.
The extra 200 Mhz wont make much of a difference at all. The macbook air was designed for use as a second computer, one where mobility was emphasized over power. For what most people are going to use it, 1.6 is more than enough. Remember that Rev 1 macbook PRO's had core duo chips that were less powerful than the core 2 duo shipped in the macbook air. For most any computing needs it has more than enough power. If you are into games, 3D or HD video editing then the macbook air might not be what you are looking for.
To me, the $300 premium does not justify the small boost of only 200 Mhz. It really wont make a difference in normal computer use anyway, which is why I decided on the 1.6 Ghz. Saying that, if I had money to burn then I wouldnt mind an extra 200 Mhz, even if it only made a difference in my head. ;)

Don't you think Apple would have taken in to consideration the new year and would have avoided not making good on their promise of "two weeks" by having them in the US already for the shipment? I doubt Apple would have screwed up shipping due to the holiday.
