I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but with all the blizzards going on in China, it is highly possible that the shipment of Air will be delayed. And don't forget it is the Chinese new year in the early Feb and the earliest day people will go back to work is around mid Feb, so it's possible the Air won't hit US till the end of Feb...
Goodness me, what is it about the Air that brings out all of these cranky prognosticators? The MBAs will get shipped and some folks will likely have them in-hand by the weekend, not one month hence.

Don't you think Apple would have taken in to consideration the new year and would have avoided not making good on their promise of "two weeks" by having them in the US already for the shipment? I doubt Apple would have screwed up shipping due to the holiday.True. But that depends on how many units they have prepared for the first shipment. I'm pretty sure most of the airports are forced to close down at this moment so those who have preordered a little bit late may have a longer wait.

Mine also switched to prepared for shipment. But remember, it said that last week also before it switched back. I ordered on day 1. Base model with no modification. The USB ethernet still shows not yet shipped.
I also got upgraded to overnight this AM after call. Did not show that on my order so I just gave them a call. It was indeed upgraded to overnight but does not show up on my order status page. She still could not tell me about the ship date....
Hope to see it ship out tonight and delivery by Thursday hopefully.

I just don't want to have my hope set too high and get disappointed. I, too, have preordered the Air can't wait to welcome the UPS guy

Did amazon authorize your cc or bank account? or do they wait until shipping?
I am thinking about taking the gold box offer but do not want to wait for amazon to get product while the stores have them in stock. With 1-day delivery I would save about $80 through amazon, but my impatience side may want to buy it from the store Wednesday (hopefully).

1. Create new amzn account.
2. Go to recommendations tab, click "rate these items," find the MacBook Air Superdrive, mark it as "I own it"
3. Go to "recommended for you" and click "not interested" on everything except the MacBook Air. Keep doing this until nothing else is left.
4. Go to Gold Box and (hopefully) find the MacBook Air
5. You can switch to your normal account when you go to check out.
Lots of luck.
Well I already had one on order from amazon without the goldbox special.
But I tried the above method and got it to show up in my gold box specials for 1704.00 w/ free shipping and no tax!
The estimated ship date is April 1st!!! I hope that an april fool's joke though!
I still have not canceled from amazon as i'm gonna wait to see if that ships when the apple store one's ship..then i'll decide if I should cancel it or not.
At worst they ship me both and I just return one.
What do you guys think?
I know it's a blanket date but it seems to be getting later and later!

I've only read Shenzhen in some previous posts. Might just be their shipping center, though I guess it is a major center of manufacturing and would make sense to build the factory close to the airport.
Guangzhou Airport, which is close to Shenzhen (and might even be shenzhen's airport) was closed today, however. It's supposed to be reopened Tuesday (which is now).

If they are shipping via the Guangzhou airport then it will be out of luck. However if they use the HK airport then everything should be fine. And it would be nice if they drop off a few Air while they are passing by

After seeing the posts about orders changing status, I quickly checked mine only to see that there was a problem authorizing my credit card.
I called Apple and they tried again and it went through. But now I can't help but think that my order has been delayed.
I knew what happened, but I called Chase to confirm. On Saturday, I bought a new TV for my parents. Then this charge goes through. My card was declined for security reasons. Chase wanted to make sure I had authorized the Apple purchase since it was an online purchase.
I appreciate the security concern, but when my credit card company gets in the way of purchases in this manner, I think it's time to go back to using my Amex.
I had the same problem when I bought my iPhone. What does Chase have against Apple? :)

Yes, I seem to remember Lantau Island, HK, appearing on the route in previous purchases. I assume that's some Fedex location close to HK airport.

I got the Gold Box deal after setting up two new accounts. Here's the current status of both of my orders.
NON GOLD BOX: $1,794.00 (free super saver shipping)
Order Placed: January 15, 2008
Shipping estimate: February 11, 2008
Not Yet Shipped: 1 item - delivery estimate: February 18, 2008 - February 22, 2008
GOLD BOX DEAL: $1,704.30 (free super saver shipping)
Order Placed: January 28, 2008
Shipping estimate: March 28, 2008
Not Yet Shipped: 1 item - delivery estimate: April 4, 2008 - April 10, 2008
The shipping time for the GOLD BOX DEAL is pretty ridiculous. We'll see what happens with the shipments. Does anyone have any clue if Amazon tracks serial numbers on computer shipments? I wonder if they'd know if I returned the GOLD BOX DEAL for the NON GOLD BOX within 30 days.
Ultimately, I'm just hoping that the GOLD BOX DEAL ships soon enough due to a large number of other orders canceled--that many Amazon buyers are impatient, decide to purchase directly from their local Apple Store or from The Apple Store Online, and that my GOLD BOX DEAL priority is bumped up the queue.
Any opinions? I can be patient, but I just hope that the 30-day return policy can still be applied in the worst case scenario, wherein I'd use the first MBA to arrive and return the second MBA to arrive as the NON GOLD BOX.

I have very wild and pricey purchases, I guess that's why. I'll buy something expensive in one city then same day buy something expensive in the next town over. Then it gets locked of course and Im trying to pay for food and they tell me its declined. I Hate it, so embarrassing

I don't quite understand the appeal or the justification for paying $3098 for a MacBook Air with the 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo and a 64GB SSD when the 15" MacBook Pro with the optional 2.6GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, the 7200rpm 200GB drive, built-in slot load SuperDrive, GeForce 8600M GT (256MB) sells for $51 less (or $3048). NOTE: That's with the $99 four gig memory kit from OWC.
If I get the MacBook Pro, I have a 44% faster CPU, 100% more memory, 6x faster GPU, 78% more VRAM, 27% more screen area, 213% more storage, and 20% longer battery life. it may weigh 2 lbs heavier and be 1/4 inch thicker, but I'll have a laptop that can do the heavy lifting of Photoshop, Excel, Word, Mail, Safari, GoLive, Preview -- all of which I'm running as I write this. Activity Monitor shows 3GB of my 4GB actively in use. And the 200GB drive has only 50GB free.
My point is that, as sexy as the MacBook Air might be, it would be a downgrade that would limit me severely in doing my work. I suppose I could eliminate some things from the hard drive. But System, Applications, Library, and User Library take up 48GB. That doesn't leave much for user files. Maybe 1.8GHz may be fast enough for most functions but 2GB of memory limit is nuts.
I don't get it. Help me understand.

That's what's great about Apple. They can make something that fits into peoples lifestyles. By all means, if you need that much power in a laptop, the MacBook Pro is an excellent choice. I didn't order the SSD model but I can only assume that there are those that want to be on the cutting edge and will want the latest technology.
I settled on the 1.6/80GB because I do a great deal of travel (80%) and I needed something smaller than the MacBook I had. Unfortunately, I have to lug around my Dell work laptop a well. Airport security sucks. It sucks even more when your trying to get 2 laptops thru security.

As I posted earlier in this thread...a direct quote from someone who contacted Amazon: "I have emailed and called Amazon, and was told that the March date is only a placeholder, orders should begin shipping sometime next week." This was posted on Jan. 24th. We shall see...and congrats to those who are "prepared for shipment"! :)

The extra money goes into the SSD, which for some reason you omitted from your comparison. It's fast and reliable.
The rest of your comparison isn't really relevant, since the base MBA is a lot cheaper than your MBP. But still:
I don't have your need for speed. If you're a graphics professional you probably need all those applications, but as a software guy I've learned one lesson: multitasking is bad for you (me).
I do research in genetics (bioinformatics) so I'd count myself as a power user. But I've never had a need for more than the MBA offers. The simulations run on a cluster anyway. As for storage capacity: a base install of OS and Software takes 20GB at most, and 44GB should be enough, at least on the road. I can only think of professional photographers and these people that obsess about the size of their movie library to need more than that. Personally, I never watch a movie twice, so taking two or three on a trip and then deleting them works fine.
Which brings us to the advantages: If you spend every third week at a conference, you'll start to notice the 2lb rather quickly. How many times did I take my powerbook with me only to regret it when I had to carry it for a whole day? Other times I thought I learned and didn't take it, only to then regret that decision.
Summa sumarum: to each his own.

Watch and it will likely go to Anchorage, get cleared for customs before it even lands and get shipped out direct to places like LA, NYC and via Memphis or some other hub for other places. They have this down to a science, really.

Same here...every time I've purchased something in the $1000.00 to $2000.00 range and have used my Chase Amazon.com Visa, I've had someone call to verify the purchase first and my order has also gotten held up because of this and it can be very frustrating. That said, I just called Chase and they said that Amazon had put through the $1.00 charge on the 26th (the day I placed my order) to verify the account, but the full purchase had not been charged yet...here's hoping that's not far behind!:D
Also, they made a note on my account that i have ok'd the purchase, along with the amount. So...now I continue to wait, but it does look promising. Oh, and my delivery date reads by March 27 at present.:p

I first ordered one for me and my wife the day it came out. But I changed my order on January 25th, when I decided to get it with the SSD option.
Originally it said ship by Feb 6, and a receive date of Feb 11.
Now it says Ships by Feb 15 delivers by Feb 20th. <ugh>
I called Apple and they said "it most likely will be with you much sooner then that. This is just the latest it will arrive"
So I'm hoping I get sooner then Feb. 20th...

Mine has since day one of placing the order given me the ship date of Tues Feb 5th.
Which was 3 weeks exactly after the Keynote speech. I see no reason at this stage to think it will ship this week at all and that date correlates mostly with everyone else's and therefore we should maybe delay all this build-up for another week.
It's likely that the first batch of MBA's produced out of the factory were heading for the retail stores.
Hence giving us all another week in order to manufacturer further stockpile so fulfill our orders.

Looks like apple is updating order status in terms of original ship dates. Sounds like everyone with a ship date of Feb 6th is getting there status changed to "prepared for shipment. Can people please confirm this by posting there original ship date when there status changes. My ship date is feb 7th and so far nothing has changed.

Hi Rob! I understand it may be difficult for you to understand what is appealing about the Macbook Air. You've been running the Barefeats Web site so long, your focus is on incremental performance improvements.
For me, "some" power is "enough". I'm typing this on the original 17" Macbook Pro, Intel Core Duo and 2 GB of RAM. I'm pretty sure the Macbook Air with 1.6 Intel Core 2 Duo will at the very least be just as fast. I'm approaching my third year of having this computer. If I don't do anything, I'll keep computing at this speed for the next 12 months. Or, I can sell this computer and put the proceeds towards the Macbook Air, and try computing on that for a year.
Why am I willing to spend say $1000 out of pocket to get the Air? Because it is much lighter, and it will be a change in computing for me. Downgrading from my current 120gb to 80gb will be the biggest challenge, but I also have 1.5 TB of external drives that I can't take with me either. I just need to figure out how to organize my stuff so that I have the essentials with me. And by essentials, I mean the program and documents I use 95% of the time in my day-to-day work. Those have got to be able to fit on an 80gb drive. I have a Cinema Display at home as well, so when I need to do more serious computing, I'll plug in to the external drives and monitor.
I do love the 17" laptops. I had the original for 3 years before this one. I've had the screen resolution set to 1280x800 to see what it's like to live at this lower resolution, and so far I'm fine, especially with the advances in the OS like Spaces. Bottom line, at some point a computer has "enough" power to do what you need it to do.

:rolleyes:I guess I appreciate Apple notifying me about the shipping status of part of my order, but... the "part" is the superdrive, which is useless to me without the laptop. Also, the notice (see below) is kinda out of sync with the original reality, which was Ships by Feb. 12 and Delivers by Feb. 18. It isn't a delay, so why the apology? :(I'm beginning to get that queezy sensation... I mean, it's that uneasy feeling that one gets while attempting to purchase something from Dell (which I have vowed I will NEVER do again)
The notice:
Due to an unexpected delay, we now anticipate shipping the following item(s) as follows:
MB397G/A, MACBOOK AIR SUPERDRIVE-GEN
Ships by Jan 30 - Feb 1
Delivers by Feb 1 - Feb 7
We regret any inconvenience this delay may cause.

Where's the MacBook Air?!
Last week I went to the Apple store in Regents Street in London and the guy there told me they should be released on Tuesday, i.e. today. So what's going on? Has anyone been to the store or phoned up yet? Or do we have to wait for it to be released in California first?
Hmmm, maybe they'll release the new MBP's today and the MBA next week ... :D

Well, hello everybody!
Just joined the forum as I'm also one of these 'waiting-for-the-magic-moment'-people.
I ordered my MBA (standard config, german layout) last Tuesday, one week after the keynote speech. Since then, no changes in shipment/delivery dates (Feb 12/21).
I'm just wondering about the fact that neither of the international stores has an update on the shipment estimate, 2 to 3 weeks everywhere ...
I hope some of you guys will let us know if the US-stores have 'something in the air' today ;) Crossing fingers for you, here in 'old Europe' :p
Cheers

Okay thats fine it ships in two weeks but are these things on a slow boat from China or what? My whole point though was just that for us all wanting to drop the money as bad as we do, we should have a definitive date. Not have to guesstimate.

i agree. i talked to 4 different reps about getting overnight too and all told me that they could only 2-3 it from china.
as for my superdrive, it will be shipped 6th, arrive 8th.
i noticed something interesting though...
i have 2 macbook airs on order, one 1.6 80 and one 1.8 80 placed both with superdrives under two seperate transactions.
so the 1.6/80 is prepared for shipment, and under shipping method it says 2 days
though for the 1.8/80 it is still not yet shipped and under the shipping method it says 2-3 days.
weird, in that they were both upgraded to the same shipping.

haha, i know the feeling. yesterday when this thread started seeing prepared for shipment confirmations i started refreshing this thread and the apple store like crazy.
being the optimist, i just cleared my credit card to authorize the mba charge, so hopefully i see "shipped" tonight and skipping the "prepared for shipment" phase.

i bet their going to hit the stores on friday - and anyone who ordered at macworld time will get them on friday - i waited until the next day to order mine so i bet mine changes to shipped tomorrow and i won't get it untill saturday.
i'm thinking of cancelling my order today and buying it at the store on friday - assuming my above premise is correct.
this is frustrating - i'm back in grade school waiting for santa to come.

I was at the Ridgedale Apple Store last night to get some help from the Genius Bar, and I noticed a few MacBook Air signs haning up. No sign of the actual units though.
An interesting note though... there are usually several genius' running around, but I didn't see more than two at one time. They kept going in the back. Maybe they were learning/testing out the Air back there? ;)

Don't know if anyone has noted this but today (January 29th) is exactly 6 months from the iPhone release (June 29th). Probably nothing but it would be pretty cool if it did get released today. My $0.02. :D
It seems another impact of the long and tense wait for the Air has been the impairment of your date calculations.. :-). From June 29th to January 29th there are 7 months (not 6)...

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this in all the previous posts, but since I ordered way later that a lot of folks (ship date of Feb. 19th) I'll play the part of Captain Bringdown.
Here's what happens with any new (as in, new form factor, new line, etc. Not an update of an existing line) Apple hardware:
It reaches Alaska from China.
Then, it stays in Alaska for an additional 1 to 3+ days. Sometimes 4, occasionally 5.
This is because the hardware shipments reach the Alaska distribution center before the customs paperwork does. Only when they receive the paperwork do they check out the shipments and are able to clear the initial shipments, as well as the consecutive ones.
This has been my experience for at least five different Apple hardware orders over the past few years (I'm a rev.A whore).
Enjoy your delays! =D

I actually work for the company, the shipping company and they do NOT unload the planes in Alaska. Everything is cleared in the receiving hub (i.e. Memphis) when the plane is on its way. They do not even unload the plane in Alaska to my knowledge.
All the paperwork is transmitted electronically to Memphis and the clearance starts before the product actually lands in the Hub.
If there are any customs delays they will happen after the shipment is in mainland China. If you are in Canada, the package will clear in Canada after it goes through Memphis. I have also seen it where it arrives in Canada as one entire shipment that clears and then the package is split up and then sent out to the individuals adding 1 extra day onto the ship time, which would bring the transit time to 2 + 1 days... (From China to Canada).

For those thinking of trying to buy one at the store. I'd suggest you not cancel your order just yet.
When I originally pre-ordered my Apple TV the stores had them for sale before I received mine -- thanks to the package being shipped signature required. I went to the store and bought one and just called FedEx and told them not to attempt redelivery. Other than being doubled charged on my CC for a week until I received my credit from my apple.com order it worked out nicely.

I noticed that in some of your other posts / forums / on Craigslist you are offering to pay airfare for someone to personally deliver you a MacBook Air. I actually possess one, but it's at my beach-house in Hawaii. Please buy me a round-trip fare from Virginia to Honolulu. When I get there, I'll pack up the Air and UPS Sonic it over to you, same day. You'll, of course, have to pay the shipping rate on that. If you could have my return flight from Hawaii be sometime next week, I'd greatly appreciate it. It's a bit of a burden to me, but don't worry, you don't have to pay me for my services. Lord knows that you probably need this so urgently for a good reason. You're welcome!

Here is an update..
I just got off the phone with Apple Sales Support, I was wanting to change my shipping method to "expedited" from "standard" and they told me not to bother it would get there the same day. I ordered a 1.8/80G with Ethernet on Jan 21st 8AM EST and my shipping dates have not changed, Feb 12 with delivery on the 22nd.
I hope some of you are right and we get them early. I have ordered many times online for myself, family and friends and I usually get it very quickly when I pick the "expedited" service. The most has been 3 days here in Canada, usually after it ships 1-2 days and the FedEx truck shows up at the door.

My Order Says:
Dear Sir,
You have purchased too many items from your local Apple Store in the last six months. While we understand that you would like a MacBook Air, Apple has determined that you need to spend time time using the 3 other laptops, their accessories, and the several iPods and iPhones you have recently purchased. These items feel neglected and we here at Apple feel you need so show them some love, before you invite another member of the Apple family into you home.
If you spend more time with your current Apple Products and less time stalking the Apple Store at your local mall we may at the time choose to send you a Macbook Air.
Best Regards,
Your friends at the Apple Store.

As did I, but I ordered literally after the keynote as soon as I could. I imagine that someone who ordered later that day could be a part of a second "wave" of computers to be shipped. "Prepared for shipment" implies that it's just awaiting Fedex to come and pick it up.

Just a point to everyone who has lost productivity due to constantly checking their shipping status (me included): China is 13 hours ahead of the East Coast USA. This means that 8:00 AM for them is 7:00 PM for us and 5:00 PM for them is 4:00 AM for us. Now we all know that Apple does not use slave labor over there (anymore?), so assuming they only prepare and ship during business hours you can take a break from checking status during your normal work day.
Now once the packages hit Alaska, it is a completely different story.
My order was a standard 1.6/80gb ordered at 10:50 AM PST the day of the keynote, is now "Prepared"

Mine is 10:40am. With 10:41am, indeed I would have expected yours to ship too. (I think someone on this forum is 10:47am and reported shipped.)
You have my sympathies. I hope yours does ship soon.

Anyone have a tracking # that shows their Macbook Air inside the USA. A recent user posted that he spoke with Apple support and they said "none were shipping", I am wondering if this means the systems are staging only for delivery later?
??? ???

Seemingly not I am afraid. Rather irritating, unless of course they dispatch a share of them to their Netherlands hub and then distribute them accordingly afterwards and inform us.
If it turns out they are purposely delaying Europe shipments over USA then that is a bit crappy.

I visited the Rockingham Apple store today and spoke to an employee who told me they will be putting up new window displays Thursday night. Based on that info, Friday seems like a pretty good bet for in-store availability.

By the way, question for you while we waiting regarding my order. So far, for my order, have chosen HDD rather than SDD: capacity (higher) and price (lower).
That said, I be able to, at some point in the future, replace the HDD with an SDD ? Under what conditions ?
Thanks for the insight...

Taking into consideration the time difference between nyc and china i'm gonna check back on my order around 8pm my time which will be 9am there I think.
If I remember correctly those whose status changed to prepared to ship yesterday and then consequently shipped today, had their status change around that time as well.
Hoping mine ships tomorrow and I get at least a prepared for shipment today!

Hey everyone, I ordered the 1.8/80 right after the keynote and everything. My est ship was Feb 6/ Feb 12... I called Apple, and got the faster shipping (2-3 days) for $14. Sounds like good news right? Because Feb 6 is a weekend, the $14 2-3 day shipping changed my delivery from Feb 6 / Feb 11. 1 day better!! He did say something about Apple not taking weekends into account in their shipping, so they will probably ship sooner than the date listed on the page.
So I guess - If 1 day means more to you, get the shipping upgrade. I didn't have any luck with the freebie though. Somehow I think that if the shipping date of the 6th is right, it's not really worth it. If it shipped on a Monday though, it would make a big difference.
----He also said that "custom computers always take longer to make and ship out than standard ones"... which is kind of odd since we placed the orders two weeks ago. So who knows what the hold up is. You would also figure that 1.8/80 is a pretty standard config for this computer.
Now, we wait!

Come on Apple! SHIP!!
At this pace its going to be easier to buy it in the store.
I see massive order cancellations if they hit the stores before they start shipping properly.

Bearer of possibly very bad news.
To wit.
I called Apple Corporate Customer Relations today.
Since I'm leaving for Kauai on 2/04, I asked if there was a chance I could get by MBA 1.8, 64GB earlier than it's predicted delivery on 2/11. :)
Here's what he said, "Sir our internal documents say that your CTO won't ship until 2/21. Because it's a CTO."
Whoa! My order says ships 2/06, delivers 2/11. "2/22 is what be shows internally for delivery.
Personally I think he was f@@king with me, what an a@@hole.
Now determined to resolve the 2/11 and 2/22 dilemma, I called Apple Corporate Customer relations again.
Spoke to a different guy, who told me the same thing!!!
It can't be that long, or are we all being punished for ordering the sexiest,
most powerful MBA in the known world.

I got a "prepared for shipment" last night, but not a shipment notice today. I wonder if the overnight delivery people aren't getting their units shipped before the 2-3 day shipment people.

Apple is handling the pre-orders for the MBA in the worst way possible. Especially due to the vague responses many customers are receiving from apple's minions on the phone and stores (including managers) and unprecise shipping and delivery dates they are giving.
I give apple a 0/10 for their handling of the MBA pre-orders. And Im never pre-ordering online from them again.
If only they gave us proper reasons and exact dates...

I think most pre-orders will be shipped before the MBA hits store shelves or else Apple will be stuck with a bunch of returns.
I ordered mine through Amazon, I'm in no hurry and I would like to play with it at the Apple store before mine ships.

We have no idea though what supply and demand will be like at the store. It's very possible many might not receive their pre-order by the time they hit store shelves. Availability in store is a whole other question. Store Reps have been now telling me to make Personal Shopper appointments because of how crazy it's going to be. I think they have an idea at how crazy it's going to be from the amount of phone calls and emails they receive.

So I just called my university campus bookstore to ask if they have macbook airs in stock and the girl that picked up said "no"
I then proceeded to ask her if she knows if they will be getting them soon and she said "We should be getting them soon. There is a shipment coming before Friday"
So I was like "Do you know when? Like tomorrow?"
And the girl whispered something/asked something to her supervisor and then she was like "That's all I can say. Sorry."
Cheers!

Friday does make sense though since many pre-orders will arrive that day and from what we have been able to get out of store reps, they definitely aren't ready for tomorrow, but keep saying this week.

I like many others here ordered mine as soon as the apple store came back online after the keynote. and I can't wait to get mine !
*BUT* As a former CFO for a much smaller tech company it is very obvious to me why no one will get theirs before Feb 1. Its simply called "Revenue Recognition" Apple wants/needs to control the timing of revenues and to do that they recognize revenue not when you order, pay, or they ship, but when they deliver the product to the customer. So if I were the CFO at Apple I would make darn sure in order to maximize revenues that they start getting DELIVERED in Feb and not in Jan. Otherwise it will dilute Feb earnings from a rev rec perspective.
Regardless of their earnings calendar i bet this is the reason..

Apple is charging the credit cards before they ship. Does that make a difference? They are getting money in January, and they are being dropped in February.

just chatted with "Matt" online - he was very unhelpful. The guy yesterday was great but Matt sucked.
Me: in the keynote he said they would ship in 2 weeks
Matt: the website has always said 2-3 weeks
Me: well Jobs said 2 weeks
Matt: we can only go by what the site says
Me: OK, I'll chack back tommorrow
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
you're killing me Smalls
I would try chatting with another rep right now but they flag your computer - I know, I tried to get info out of them prior to the release of the MBA and they knew it was me again.
