Prior to the MBA release when it was all rumors I did the online chat through the apple store and tried to get info but the first guy wasn't helpful at all. So after ending that chat I got the brillant idea to just try and chat with a different agent so opened another chat window about 3 minutes after closing the first one. I got "welcome back, I saw you were just chatting with Joe" so yeah they knew I was just on their system with a different agent, They are sneaky down there at Apple

Some good/bad news for me:

This morning I checked and the unit had supposedly shipped with approx. arrival date of 2/1. Unfortunately, now it reads (at Fedex) a status of "Shipment Exception" - something about "package received after Fedex cutoff " at 7:25pm :(

Since it looks like the stores will get them on Friday, my bet is that the 2-3 day orders are shipping to be on time for a Friday delivery, and that the overnight delivery people will have theirs shipped on Thursday for a Friday delivery. If this is true....I'd feel sorry for the people who actually paid for overnight delivery...

We have no idea though what supply and demand will be like at the store. It's very possible many might not receive their pre-order by the time they hit store shelves. Availability in store is a whole other question. Store Reps have been now telling me to make Personal Shopper appointments because of how crazy it's going to be. I called back about the shipping for my 1.8/80. The guy said that only the 1.6 were shipping now. I asked what the difference was (as before) and he told me that custom units will always take 5 - 7 days more than the base model, pre order or not. When I asked about Apple Stores he said the same rule applied. Around the end of the week for the base model, but longer. Pre-ordering is "a good way to ensure that you get the exact item you want, in a timely fashion. Not a way to make sure you get the first one"

Looks like Feb 6 is around right on.

I ordered a MacBook Air immediately after the end of the keynote (from within the keynote hall at MacWorld, actually - thankful for an EVDO signal inside there). I went for the standard configuration and received a notice two days ago that the item was ready for shipment.

Last night, I received the shipping notice before going to bed, but like a few others, it missed the cutoff for the flight out of Shanghai and off to Alaska. I recall this same thing happening with my MacBook Pro order a few years ago.

I expect an update to my shipping status when I wake up tomorrow morning that the package is on its way to Alaska. Assuming there isn't a customs hold in Alaska, I should be getting my MacBook Air on Friday.

Thats why I said before that this is probably the worst pre-order that apple has ever done. And I dont say this because they are taking long to ship, but because of their vague answers and unprecise ship and delivery dates. Is it that difficult to give a reason? What is the big secret?

Yeah, I am not really a fan of the multi-touch gestures either. They seem to childish to tell you the truth. And they are very limited to iphoto and web browsing by the looks of it. Not saying that I won't like my Macbook Air, but the gestures aren't very appealing to me.

the EU-customers secure margins. I don't think that Apple realizes a loss when
they sell the entry-MBA for USD 1.800,00... the gap of USD 700,00 up to EU
prices is a 100% margin - great abitrage opportunity.

Australia's similar ($2,499AUD = approx $2,200USD for base config). (Although I got discount through my employer to bring it down to $2,349, then I'll take it as part of my salary package which knocks another 41.5% off, so only out of pocket $1,374AUD which is only about $1,195USD!!) I ordered 1.6/80G about 5 hours after keynote and still showing as not yet shipped. (Ships by 07/02, Delivers by 11/02).

Not really as all installer discs only work on the laptop / models they were designed for.

A mac pro disc wont install on a macbook, and a macbook pro installer disc wont work on an imac.

Mine is now in transit, Fedex is saying delivery on Friday by 10:30am. Just like Apple said in their original "shipped" email to me.

For all of you guys saying "this is the worst pre-order ever", my opinion is that it's going exactly as planned. Steve said they would commence shipping on Tuesday, and obviously has planned a Friday launch...in the stores and in the hands of consumers. By pre-ordering the base model early enough after the keynote, you are essentially guaranteeing to get one of the first ones, rather than fight for available inventory in the stores.

I'm 100% positive that Apple planned the MBA's to "miss the Fedex cutoff". Fedex must have been clued in to this shipment way in advance and had it well planned to arrive at various destinations in the USA. I think that also explains why the quickest option the day of the keynote was 2-3 days? If there were an overnight option, I would have selected it, but unless I'm mistaken about overnight not being available, again it's Apple planning to make sure everyone gets theirs at the same time on Friday.

Finally, why the base model? It's easy to imagine that any custom order will take extra time. I agree it sucks that the more expensive "stock" configuration isn't shipping at the same time apparently, but I guess I'm not surprised. All I can say is that if I were to place a bet (which I did), it would be that the base model would be out the door first. Everything else is an unknown and thus a gamble.

Check your Apple order again. There may be a link to "pre-release" this shipment with your signature, meaning you print out the form, sign it and put it on your door, and Fedex will in theory leave it.

Some of you people are impossible to please. Apple states 2-3 weeks very clearly when you order, and here we are at 2 weeks and 1 day and you're proclaiming "worst pre-order ever." I'm as excited as anyone, but I won't be upset till it's been 3 weeks and it still hasn't shipped.

Personally I ordered as soon as the store came online after the keynote, but my CC number was used by someone else the next day, so I was issued a new number and when I updated my credit card info two days later, my order date/time changed. Also, I ordered a 1.8/80 so it seems I'd be delayed anyways.

Also what I find interesting is that all the models on display at Mac World were base models, as well as all the units sent for reviews. Perhaps the 1.8 or SSD drive versions are simply not ready yet.

Either way, I can't wait to go to the Apple Store and play while I wait for my 1.8/80 to arrive.

Here is my $.02 on the shipping. I've tried to read all the posts so it maybe a repeat. The Macbook Air 1.6/80 should be shipping for Friday delivery for all preorders. The custom ones will take longer. It is easier to produce the same config when doing a mass ship. Most likely the stores will only have the standard config too. Apple doesn't want custom preorders being cancelled.

I ordered the 1.6/80 on the 17th upgraded free to Overnight yesterday, but still shows not shipped.:)

Its still in the Not Yet Shipped phase. I got the 1.6/80 but added the iworks pre-installed - no idea that would delay shipping. If I would have known I would have bought it seperately. If the MBA wasn't so dang perfect for what I need - I'm a physical therapist and have to carry it around all day - I'd go and buy a regular MacBook. Impatience is turning into frustration

Even the most minor of customizations means that they can't send you one of the prepackaged stock options. It's not that complicated.

I think your better bet is to try and get one from a store now.

don't forget that the air is ready when it's ready. It's not ready for people or apple stores any sooner than amazon. If they started shipping, they shipped to people and apple stores and amazon at the same time. It will take you longer to get your notebook, however long it takes for amazon to receive and turn around your product is going to be your delay...

I was thinking about it and when Steve Jobs said it will be "shipping in 2 weeks" didn't he also say that the update for Apple TV Take 2 would be out in that time period too? WELL STEVE I WENT OUT AND BOUGHT AN APPLE TV CAN I HAVE MY FRIGGIN UPDATE?!?

What would have been the major disaster if he would have said "Pre-orders ship in two weeks and on February 1st the MacBook Air would be released."

What is the big issue? They did it with the iPhone and Leopard. I thought those launches went pretty well. This MBA launch is quite frankly annoying.

Well it seems that I'm about the only one that got theirs pre-ordered through Best Buy. I've always been pretty happy with their service plans, especially the Accidental part. Oh, plus it helps to get an employee discount from there too. From Apple with an education discount the computer goes down to 1699 and Apple Care goes to 183. But from what I understand about AppleCare, it doesn't provide a free battery replacement and doesn't cover physical damage.
So I might have to wait a couple of days longer to get the air, but I saved a bundle. Maybe I'll use that extra money to take a flight to NY or LA and go to the Apple stores to play with the MBA before it arrives at home, :D

The flights you saw were from yesterday. You have to look at the planned flights. The FAA can not guarantee flight departures from foreign cities so, until they land in Anchorage, we won't know the true inflight status.

I would think that around 3 PM Central, the tracking sites should have more accurate information.
