MacBook Air Now Shipping

Apple TV Update Coming Soon
now the question is... i ordered a 1.8/80 from amazon. apple isn't even shipping the CTO machines yet. so how long is the wait... 3 weeks? eek.

How do you know the authorization has been placed on your card? Do you have to call up your cc company...on amex I dont think it shows up online until the charge is actually made...
My credit card works this way. I have online access. I connect with my account, and look to see what my available balance is. If the cc shows a decrease in the available balance, ie difference equal to cost of MBA. Then I know that there is a hold on my cc for the MBA.
You could also call your cc service center.

Here's what I don't get, though: The Apple Store page for the MBA lists two configurations... 1.6/80 at $1799, and 1.8/SSD at $3098. To me, neither of these is CTO/BTO, since they are "stock" configurations according to the page. To me, a CTO/BTO machine would be, say, a 1.8/80, because that requires that you specifically select a CPU upgrade. This one reason why I am a touch concerned that the 1.8/SSD should take much longer to ship than the "base" 1.6/80.
EDIT: My MBA SuperDrive just changed to "Prepared for Shipment"!

From what I understand any MBA with an SSD. Those models will be the last to begin shipping.

From Apple's press release:
Pricing & Availability
The new MacBook Air is now shipping and will be available through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $1,799 (US),
As of today??? It doesn't say anything about any future date as far as the Apple store's and retailers go...

All those with MacBook Air CTOs:
I'm concerned because my order confirmation doesn't explicitly say the keyboard/OS is in English. Instead it just has a part number for it -- 065-7270. I called Apple; they didn't know what the language was based on the part number. My concern is, Googling the number brought back a hit that the part number was for a Spanish keyboard/OS, which isn't what I ordered.
If you're sure that your order is in English, can you check on your order confirmation that the part number 065-7270 verifies?
Thanks.

Still at "not yet shipped". Seriously considering cancelling and ordering through BestBuy. They list shipping as arriving between 2/4 and 2/11 with the fastest shipping arriving on 2/6 - the day mine is scheduled to ship by Apple. The big thing is the extended warranty plan. I think BestBuys covers drops, etc and has a no lemon clause, anyone know about AppleCare???? Also there is no Apple store here in town - 2 hour drive to the closest one - so I really don't like the idea of having to ship in my MBA for any repairs.

Jan 30, 2008, 03:28 PM
Interesting to note that Amazon is now showing the 1.8/80 model as "Temporarily out of stock. Order now and we'll deliver when available" whereas just this morning it was still considered a "pre-order".
Meanwhile, the 1.6/80 is still listed as a Pre-order item and still says "This item has not yet been released. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives."
I have a feeling Amazon will be shipping as early as this weekend. At least that's what I'm hoping for!:p:)

Because yours will arrive in Alaska Thursday afternoon around 1pm PST from Shanghai, then sit for a few hours, then head to Memphis or Indianapolis that late afternoon, getting there in the wee hours Friday early AM, missing the flights out to your city for Friday delivery. It'll show up in your home city either Friday PM or Saturday AM after all the trucks are already out.
See if your city/station will allow Saturday pickup.

Nope. "In transit" means it's loaded onto a plane. When it lands in Anchorage, you get "Arrived at FedEx location, Anchorage, Alaska".
After "Left Origin", you get "Picked up", then "In transit".

yea i agree waiting a couple days more to get what you want is no biggie
i went with the 1.6 cause i didn't think the upgrade in speed was worth $300
and that took some stress haha casue i really wanted the 1.8 lol
so settled with the superdrive option instead haha
I think it was smart of you to go with the 1.6, the bottleneck in the computer is going to be the 4200rpm hard drive (for the non-SSD models), the 1.8 isn't really going to shine that much when the hard drive spins that slow.

Hey, easy man. We saved your ass in WW2. :D Just kidding.
But in all seriousness, many (most?) of us are still staring at the same "Not yet shipped" status as all of you. So really, you should be damning only the select few, lucky Americans who have shipping MBAs.

My MacBook AIR Superdrive has shipped and will be here in 2 days.
The Ethernet adapter is prepared for shipment and says will ship on the 6th, which is what the Superdrive used to say.
The MacBook AIR itself still says ships the 8th, arrives the 11th. I ordered it on the 15th, but upgraded it to 1.8GHz, but not with the SSD.
...The wait continues...
While I was getting ready to post a "me too!" I checked my order status again and now my ethernet adapter status has also just gone to shipped. The superdrive and ethernet adapter are both coming from PA (duh, separate boxes, both due here Friday, we'll see if they both get onto the truck).
So now all that's missing is ze little 1.8 SSD airhead ;) itself which still sez will ship on Wednesday Feb 6th and be delivered on the 11th (Monday).

It's in transit from Shanghai to Anchorage right now - it'll get there Thursday at 1pm. You didn't go out with the first shipment the day before, like mine did. Mine arrived in Anchorage a few hours ago.
Mine landed in Alaska a few hours ago too. I have "overnight" shipping. I wonder if that means I'll get it tomorrow... (Thursday).
I hope so, I'm leaving town early Friday morning.

There is no mention of AK in my tracking notice. This is what it says:

The iPhone took time because there was not mobile service provider secured here. Computers usually arrive here at the same time as in the USA. I got my Mac Pro at the Apple Store on the day after it was announced in January (which matched the what occurred in the USA). That's the norm, and pre-orders are pre-orders. As it looks, despite the fact that we pre-ordered, Americans will be able to walk into a store and buy an Air long before we have ours in our hands. That strikes me as a poor decision on Apple's part, particularly after the Touch debacle with pre-orders. The UK is a very big market for Apple. They should treat us as such here, and clearly they aren't.

We don't know that the Apple Stores are going to get a large enough inventory. Adequate, so anyone can walk in, and walk out.
I really don't think the MacBook Air distribution will model the iPhone. Turns out most everybody in line waiting for the Apple Store to open, was able to get an iPhone that day.

Well, as I sit here looking at my "Not shipped" message I am reduced to pondering how clever Apple can be. Clearly these machines have been ready for a couple of weeks (maybe not in huge quantities, but ready) as the various pundits and review sites seem to have received "full" models -- not really pre-release versions. By making everyone cool their jets they have certainly revved up the excitement quite a bit-- added a bit of drama to the release.
Now that can obviously work both ways-- note that the reviews have been decidedly cautious -- check out how Jason Snell at Macworld navigates his review (just posted). And even I have found myself reconsidering a bit even though I fit the demographic very well -- drifting back to whether I should just go to the Macbook... though I will probably stick with the Air as the prospect of going from my MBP to the Air will be even more exciting as I leave for another round of flights on Saturday -- MBP in tow :( .
In any case, looking forward to the unboxing pics!

I really enjoyed the 12" PB, my first Mac. I sold it to my brother who finds it perfectly adequate to build his iWeb sites and compose music. After toting around the 15.4" MBP, it'll be nice to get something a little smaller and a lot lighter. Like I said, if they'd come out with a 12" MBP, I might have gotten that instead.
With .mac and iSync (plus Retrospect and HDD's at home) , it's really not necessary to carry around all the stuff on one computer anymore.

And what torture that you can't buy it! Anyone remember anything like that in the past?

FWIW, I stopped by the Santa Monica store a few minutes ago and there were no signs of any MBA's anywhere, on display or otherwise. I didn't have time to wait around to ask any of the (swamped) salespeople for more info.
Sounds like the SSD models on display might be either a Flagship Store thing or maybe just a 5th ave store thing.
It's a bit concerning, because after skimming all the posts in this thread, I notice that the only thing that hasn't shipped is a machine with a SSD. There are plenty of stock (1.6/80GB) ship notices, and some CTO (1.8/80GB) shipments, but so far I haven't seen anything with an SSD actually ship or be prepared to ship. If SSD models wind up for sale in stores before they go out to pre-order folks that would be a bummer.

Just came back from the 5th avenue store in nyc...MAN THIS THING IS ***** SWEET!!! You truly have to see and feel it in person to know what it's all about!!
you know the feeling you had when you first got your iphone (if you have one that is!)..the feeling that you cannot believe this type of technology exists let alone the face that your holding it in your hand? Kinda hard to explain what I mean haha...
It just looks and feels incredible!! So sleek and beautiful-
I just wanted to to rip it off the magsafe and take it home with me!!
No employee would confirm when they would be available for sale but mine is already shipped so no worries there. Only got to play with it for a couples mins as my wife was waiting outside so no comments on performance yet.
I think going there was a bad idea because now i'll be dreaming about it all night!
I'm gonna go to store in meat packing tomorrow to check it out again if they have it...my wife works in that area so it'll be a good excuse to head that way after school!

I didn't have that much time on it. They've already pulled the MBAs from the floor! So, definitely call and confirm before making the trip.
First impressions are VERY positive. First off, this is one beautiful computer. The curves and taper are just right. Thin is definitely the name of the game here -- it is as thin as we've all been told it is. Thin, but not at all flimsy. The build quality is excellent; feels very solid in the hand. The black keyboard against the silver metallic body looks much better in person.
Speaking of the keyboard, it is great. Good amount of travel and response; amazing that we have a keyboard of this quality attached to such a thin computer.
The screen is also very good -- it looks miles better than whatever they put on the standard MacBook. The colors really pop thanks to the (love/hate) glossy finish. As with the keyboard, it is striking to see a display of this quality on a laptop with these dimensions.
I got to play with the 1.8/SSD model. All of you who opted for this configuration are in for a real treat -- it is speedy. Basically, sub-one-bounce application loading. I wasn't able to do anything heavy-duty, of course, but the feel I got was of a total performance package on par with a current MBP. It left a strong enough impression on me that I'm seriously considering abandoning my plan of upgrading later and opting for the SSD now. The $3K pricepoint actually began to make sense. The funny thing is that the computer IMO is so physically attractive and well put-together that I couldn't help but feel like pouring the money into it to make the inside match the outside :p
I can't wait for Friday!!! :apple:

Don't know if any SSD's were around..didn't really look for info on them as I only had a few mins in the store...One thing that really stood out (besides the extreme thinness) was the overall slick look it had while closed. The edges are nicely rounded and it makes it appear a lot better than a MBP with the squarish edges. I think this was also written about in a review somewhere but it really does add that extra sex appeal.
I was caressing it like a dirty whore!

No idea. I think someone put them out prematurely as there was absolutely no MBA promotional material on display anywhere in the store.
Was it really light in the hand?
It felt light on an absolute scale, yet dense. Like the iPhone. I didn't want to put it down :p
Certainly a totally different class from the MBP and even the MB. This is definitely a form factor and weight where you won't have to think twice about bringing your computer with you.
BTW, congrats on the SSD model... Looking at retail 64GB SSD prices and playing with one firsthand, I'd have to say that it's worth the dough if you have the means. I want one.

The interesting part is it seems to be coming from Memphis, TN...
"Picked Up" MEMPHIS TN
Estimated arrival is the 1st.
I think that Memphis is one of the places they sometimes bust up bulk shipments of new stuff into the individual orders. I remember getting a 2nd gen nano that way once when I had expected it would be like my first mini iPod and tracking it from China, but the nano just showed up as coming from Memphis.

You'll be able to see by looking at the FedEx page - it shows delivery date and time. What does it say? I bet Friday, right?

Yeah, it says "by Friday," which leaves that tiny little annoying hope that it could be delivered before.
I leave for a work thing early Friday morning and won't be home until late Saturday night. Very sad to think of my new MBA sitting all alone and unopened for two days. My wife will take it in from the stoop, put it in my office and there it will sit in its box until I return. :)

I'm so torn between HDD and SSD. The biggest thing I'm torn over is if 12 months from now I want to replace it for a new MBA with possibly a new feature or two and maybe even a bit more bang for the buck. I have a feeling I'd want to. I would have less of an investment in it too since it'd be the base model.
Also here in Atlanta, I have gotten that they would be getting both models. I imagine Kansas City would get SSD. I would find it kind of strange if some stores didn't atleast have a few.

Just checked credit card and both the amounts for the ethernet dongle and the 1.8 SSD MBA with iWork are pending again. I then got an e-mail saying the ethernet dongle had shipped via FedEx with a tracking number. Still no shipping data for the MBA and it was ordered at 10:40AM on 15 Jan. The FedEx number is to new to track with at this time (10:09PM Arizona)

Ethernet dongle is shipping from Memphis, TN the largest FedEx hub, and will be here Friday. No reference how it got to Memphis, where the swinging cats are having a ball...Guess I can plug it into another laptop or desktop to play with it.....see if it works. Who knows, the MBA might stagger out the door Friday. It is supposed to ship by the 6th and arrive the 11th of February. (10:42PM Arizona)

Looks like my MBA 1.8/SSD is being "prepared for shipment" too! I ordered around 10:41am PST with an initial ship date of Feb 6... Spending way too much time looking at this...
Any thoughts as to whether this will ship in the next day or so?... based on the lag on other orders' status changing from "prepared for shipment" to "shipped"?
Thanks

My MBA 1.6/80 just shipped (or at least I have a tracking #). I ordered it on Jan. 16, 1:30am PST. I know they ship through Anchorage, Alaska, but I actually happen to LIVE in Anchorage, Alaska. Is there any chance I'll be able to just go to FedEX and pick it up tomorrow afternoon? Or will it have to ship out to Memphis and then back to Alaska?
