You wouldn't think so, but who knows? Years ago, one of the front desk girls at FedEX put her winter gear on and climbed into a shipping container in subzero temps to get my MacBook. Then again, just this past summer my iPhone was sitting in Anchorage, and I was told they weren't going to unload anything and that it would have to ship to Memphis (or maybe it was Indianapolis) to clear customs before being shipped back to Alaska.

I think the key to this is where it actually clears customs. Up until that point, they can't reroute or release anything. In any event, I'm driving over there the minute it says it's arrived in Anchorage to see what's up. You can't imagine how frustrating it would be to actually be in the same building as my MBA and then have to go home empty-handed, knowing it's going to be shipped halfway across America before coming back to me.

Amazon update: I'm still waiting for both 1.6/80 orders, one of which was placed at 11am on the 15th. The other gold box discounted order was placed on the evening of the 29th.

I'm planning on swapping out the 1.8" 80GB for an SSD also. I figured that since it's an iPod drive, I'd give it a year to year and a half--it'll definitely be put to much greater stress than any iPod classic.

On the technical side, it's interesting that the rumors sites report that Samsung has a 128GB SATA SSD on the way, but no PATA. I'm no engineer, but is the SATA connector backward compatible with the PATA interface? If not, a 32 or 64GB PATA SSD may be on this year's Christmas wishlist... Or AppleCare, if I believe the 80GB 1.8" hard disk drive to be suitable/sustainable for another year or two or three.

Nope. PATA and SATA are totally different - also the 128gb is a 2.5" drive, not a 1.8". Generally the 1.8" drives are PATA, and the 2.5"'s are SATA.

So 64gb is biggest for time being.

Status changed to prepared for shipment on my 1.8/SSD ordered at 10:51AM on the 15th. It changed sometime between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM. Somehow I found time between refreshing the order status page to sleep.

I was also looking to swap out the 4200RPM drive with an SSD. The units NewEgg carries come in 2 different versions though - 44 & 50 pins. Which model is the MBA going to working with?

Looks like my MBA 1.8/SSD is being "prepared for shipment" too! I ordered around 10:41am PST with an initial ship date of Feb 6... Spending way too much time looking at this...

Any thoughts as to whether this will ship in the next day or so?... based on the lag on other orders' status changing from "prepared for shipment" to "shipped"?

But based on what service Apple paid for, it says it's expected to be delivered tomorrow. Therefore the systems of FedEx figured they have 24 hours and 8 minutes to get it on the local truck.

Nice! Mine is at my local facility too. Not sure if it will make it on a truck though. The bummer is if Apple didn't specify "hold at FedEx location" on the shipping documents, FedEx says they must at least attempt one delivery before they will allow the recipient to go in and proactively pick it up.

Yup.. they actually sent it through Alexandria's sorting facility since I'm in Arlington. If you're in Herndon you could probably see the FedEx plane landing at Dulles. ;)

The earliest it will get to Alaska is late evening today. No chance of Friday delivery. I guess Monday is it for me.

It really pi$%$% off that I could have just gone to the Apple store tomorrow and bought the thing instead of all this.... If I had paid for the overnight shipping (they had comped me but I guess it didn't matter now), I would definitely be wanting refund for that.

I guess in the bigger scheme of things, we are healthy and alive.

Interesting b/c FedEx has delivered many packages a day early to me and UPS never...in fact, UPS has screwed up so many deliveries for me it's ridiculous. I"ll take FedEx any day of the week. Just goes to show how it can vary.

THIS IS GETTING SO ANNOYING.

Still "Not yet shipped" for mine. Kind of painful when others are getting delivered.

It seems like Apple has had very limited initial supply. These things are just barely trickling out. I wonder if they have had a hard time getting them made in large quantities. I'm sure they'll catch up eventually but I wonder when. Right now, some people already have theirs while other people who ordered mere hours or minutes later have no progress whatsoever.

ok here is the number 8004554588 my shipment left China today not yesterday, they have 2-3 days to deliver the packages, not counting weekends, they do not Overnight ANY package, even though they say overnight, there is a slim chance i might get it tomorrow... but not holding my breath...ALSO APPLE has it so you can't pick it up in person at a Fed ex location until One delivery attempt is made... so everyone that just make me :mad:

for what it's worth, it's not uncommon for FedEx to deliver a day early-and they are always on time...at least in my experiences with them! Hang in there!

Man, I have to admit that I'm just kickin' myself a little right now...I ordered the 1.8/80 the second the store came up and decided that the $300.00 wasn't worth the difference and cancelled my order.
Oh well, at least I'm saving a little chunk of $ this way since I have it on order from Amazon (caught the Gold box special + no tax) and I still have an order in with Apple and I got them to knock $100.00 off...at least that's what I keep telling myself. :( :)

fedex box was about twice as thick as the black mba box. styrofoam in each corner holding it there in the middle of the box protected. the mba box is tightly shrinkwrapped and i had to stick a paperclip through the wrap where the box meets to avoid putting a scratch in my box!

Heh, trust me, I've tried to figure out how to do exactly that except I made two big "mistakes."

1) Used my iPhone discount on the online order. Even if I were to return the online order, I wont be able to use the discount on the in store purchase b/c it won't be credited back in time. And you cannot do it retroactively. I asked.

2) I would have to ship the online order back, I cannot bring it back to a store. $$$. I asked.

3) I went for the $99 printer rebate deal, so I would also have to ship that back. $$$.

I got fooled, and I knew better. You should never trust retail I've known that forever, but I did. This was my first online mac order (only my second mac ever). Will likely be my last.

Oh, and I paid for 2-3 shipping, got the free "overnight" (lol, right) upgrade, and I'm still on for monday, not friday. I did call them and they did refund me the $18 but I'd still much rather have it today. Or Tomorrow. Or Saturday. Or Sunday.

But then again, it's not yet confirmed that stores will have them tomorrow, and furthermore, there's no confirmation that they will have lots. Why not buy one in the store tomorrow, and then return the one coming via FedEx back to the store next week? If you keep it sealed, I see no reason why the Apple Store wouldn't refund your money.

i totally understand what your going thru. i actually canceled my order once it became apparent to me that i wouldn't get it by friday. i called the 14th st store today and the guy there said the rumor around the store is that they would go on sale this weekend - but who knows - these are all rumors - if i were you - i'd keep my monday delivery - i bet these are more popular than we initially thought and i'm worried they'll sell out at the stores very quickly. i wish i hadn't canceled my order.

I don't think anyone is suggesting attempting to swap one MBA for another. I would legitimately expect the store to accept a return from something I ordered online if it is sealed. I understand a phone rep may have said "you must ship it back", but I don't believe it. I'd instead let store management step up and help solve the problem. I'd be very forthright about it too, showing how I bought it in store the week before even.

I was able to identify the Fedex flights from China to Anchorage on flightaware.com. There are only 2, FDX90 which goes from ZSPD (Shanghai) to PANC (Anchorage)then on to KMEM (Memphis) and FDX24 which goes from ZSPD to PANC then to KIND (Indianapolis). Both end up in the continental US (either Memphis or Indy) at around 11:45PM EST.

Since there are only 2 flights a day, they must be on one of them....

If you end up getting one at the store, just refuse the package. Once it makes it's way back to Apple you will get your refund. I've done this before, it wasn't a big deal.

Well, I have received everything

I picked up a nice little case at BestBuy for $20 on sale. Tried it with the Macbook they had in store and fits nicely (a little snug but Air should fit perfectly). The Apple Kiosk guy said he won't get their Air for at least another two or three weeks.

It's gotten warm on the underside, i'd say the 1/3 portion under the numbers on the keyboard. There's no heat whatsoever on the 2/3 portions under the trackpad and the middle of the keyboard. This is good news for all male users...we may burn our knees, but we can live with that!

About 2-3 bounces on the dock to boot up Safari, Calendar. 1 bounce for Settings. Everything else seems a tad speedier than my MacBook 2.0 Core Duo. However, I only have 1GB RAM on that one. I think those who opted for the SSD will really feel a difference with the Apps loading.

Yes; application loading is one bounce or less on the SSD model.

I was kinda thinking in that direction too. The trouble is until recently SSD was considered a niche market since the only real consumers for it were power concious laptop users. Now that the server market for SSD seems to be gaining steam I think the price wars could really ignite. I still can't see it happening in a rapid enough fashion to sway my decisions for the next year and a half or so.

That's sort of my plan too. I ordered one with the 1.8 and the 80 gig HD because I figured a year and a half from now the SSD's would be larger and cheaper.

Of course, because I did that my MBA hasn't changed status and I figure I won't see it for another week yet. ::sigh::

The SSD is a SATA drive, no way to replace the HD, which is PATA, to work with a SATA connection.

The after market SSD are all in the 2.5" form factor. The SSD in the MBA is a 1.8" form factor.

a roughly 150MB update takes 30 minutes to download (have a 15Mbit line at home), and then an additional hour of installation. partially this is why my ps3 collects dust (but that's for another topic of discussion).

as for the delay (after all, the official press release hit in 2 weeks + 1 day), there are a host of factors that led to the delay, i think, but mainly production-related; snowstorm in China, probable low yields of the processors, procurement of parts. again, all in speculation ;)

just hope when the halfa-gig update drops, it doesn't drop apple's servers to its knees.

I don't think anyone is suggesting attempting to swap one MBA for another. I would legitimately expect the store to accept a return from something I ordered online if it is sealed. I understand a phone rep may have said "you must ship it back", but I don't believe it. I'd instead let store management step up and help solve the problem. I'd be very forthright about it too, showing how I bought it in store the week before even.

The screen is also very good -- it looks miles better than whatever they put on the standard MacBook. The colors really pop thanks to the (love/hate) glossy finish. As with the keyboard, it is striking to see a display of this quality on a laptop with these dimensions.
