Beware that the Macbook Air's may not have arrived at the Apple Store by 9am!! Maybe you want the first 10am appointment instead. Fedex will probably deliver them "by 10:30am".

Don't forget when you quote a time in China, when things come back this way you lose a day because they cross the international date line. For example it is 4:14 AM Friday in Beijing China.

Well my MacBook Air 1.8 GHz/80 GB HD custom ordered went to "Prepared for Shipping" sometime in the last hour!!!

It was ordered 1/15 at around 1130am right after the Keynote with an educational store discount, I did spring for the expedited 2-3 day shipping.

Anyone know about how much lag between "Prepared" status to "Shipped"?

Hopefully they'll beat the original 2/6 ship by date and I'll get well before the original delivery by date of 2/11 (especially if they can ship within the next couple of days and well before the weekend of 2/9-10).

i was hoping though that it would be airborne the evening of the 31st over there. converting the departure time for fdx90 (according to flightaware) is 9:00PM china time. but if it's outbound today (friday over there), that's fine. the race to who's 1st is moot at this point.

I'm one of the people who got stuck w/ the Monday ETA for the stock system.

I just got off the phone w/ FedEx and the lady wasn't so hyped about my chances of getting this thing on Friday instead of Monday (no surprise). So I asked about Saturday delivery and I got a big "maybe" and it "depends" but then I asked if there was anything I could do to have it happen and then she said there is a $12 fee for Saturday delivery and she said that IF it was there by Saturday morning they would make a delivery attempt. So I gave her my CC#!

I have no idea if this will work. If it does, I'm gonna call up Apple and make them refund me. heh.

The box is sweet! It's exactly like the iPhone box! As other first reviewers have said, the case feels amazingly sturdy and there is definitely a huge weight difference in feel compared to a MacBook when picking up with one hand!

Well, I guess any movement is good movement. My 1.8/SSD order from the 28th just switched up. The 'Book itself used to be listed with a product number - that is, NOT as "CTO." Now, it has switched to CTO with a CTO-style product number (Z0FS).

The other thing? It used to have a ship-by date of Feb. 19th - along with the CTO change, the ship-by date changed to the 22nd. Bleh!

I unfortunately ordered a 1.6/80 on the 21st. What is the most recent date for someone that has gotten a "prepared to ship"?

Snuck out of work to pick mine up, box was at the door and small enough to fit inside a small rainproof drawer we keep outside.

Just a few quick impressions:

As mentioned, it's hard to aptly describe the thinness and "feel" - I think you just have to check it out. It's nothing short of amazing. You can read the numbers on the dimensions a million times but that doesn't really convey the true look and feel. Whether it's actually useful in the long run is obviously a question for the future, but there's no denying this is an engineering marvel.

The screen is gorgeous, I haven't had time to test it with a movie or anything, but the intro screen looked spectacular. Boot up time felt quite a bit slower than my iMac (I have the low end new one) but general performance thus far (just web browsing) seems very zippy.

The keyboard is every bit as good as described; typing on it right now feels great. I'd wager to say it feels more solid and for some reason even more spacious than the thin thing that came with the recent iMacs. I absolutely love the touch gesturing. I don't know exactly how it works on the standard MBs, but navigating a page with a touch pad never felt easier. Scrolling with 2 fingers is very cool, and I like the zoom in on text with the same iPhone zoom gesture. I don't know if the older models allow you to scroll up and down as well, but I know all the old touch pads I'd used in the past were nowhere near this useful.

Only complaint so far: it seems to be warming up rather quick and the fan is louder than I expected it would be. Of course the hard drive is extremely quiet so I guess that balances it out.

Sadly I need to get back to work but I plan to spend a good portion of tomorrow playing around and trying out some games and such.

I got the SSD/1.8 option and the Superdrive and Ethernet adapter. The Superdrive and Ethernet adapter are expected to arrive tomorrow, but the MBA is not supposed to get here until next Tuesday. Says it left Shanghai earlier today. Seems highly unlikely that it will make it here tomorrow or even Saturday. Guess I'll just have to wait.

Only complaint so far: it seems to be warming up rather quick and the fan is louder than I expected it would be. Of course the hard drive is extremely quiet so I guess that balances it out.

When Steve showed the innards of the Air at Macworld and compared the logic board with a pencil, there was a fan. I don't think it would be on most of the time tho since the Air is really thin which helps with the cooling. And yes, the SSDs are silent up to the 128 GB capacity where you would need a fan to cool them down. But that doesn't mean the 64 GB SSD models won't need a fan since other computer components need to be cooled down -- but even then, sound would be at a minimum

A went with a friend to buy a new Mac Pro desktop today. Since the Santa Monica store is in an outdoor mall, the procedure with big items is to drive around to the back alley, knock on the door, show receipt and they give you the machine. So it was right around 4:00pm when we pulled up to the rear door of the Apple store and saw... A FedEx truck being unloaded! I don't have X-Ray vision, but it looked like pallets of Macbook Air shipping containers all shrinkwrapped together. After we got our computer loaded into the car, I asked one of the store employees who was there if any of them might have the SSD. He smiled wryly and said "That would be nice!"

So if you're in the LA area, I bet that a personal shopping appointment for tomorrow at the 3rd St. store in Santa Monica would be a good way to get a machine!

A went with a friend to buy a new Mac Pro desktop today. Since the Santa Monica store is in an outdoor mall, the procedure with big items is to drive around to the back alley, knock on the door, show receipt and they give you the machine. So it was right around 4:00pm when we pulled up to the rear door of the Apple store and saw... A FedEx truck being unloaded! I don't have X-Ray vision, but it looked like pallets of Macbook Air shipping containers all shrinkwrapped together. After we got our computer loaded into the car, I asked one of the store employees who was there if any of them might have the SSD. He smiled wryly and said "That would be nice!"

So if you're in the LA area, I bet that a personal shopping appointment for tomorrow at the 3rd St. store in Santa Monica would be a good way to get a machine!
SM store is always fairly secretive. I'll betcha that tomorrow they'll have redecorated the store, and the employees will all have new tee shirts, all for the unveiling of the Air. It'll be on full display with fanfare.

My recommendation, get there before the doors open if you want one from the Santa Monica store. Once they open those doors the store is going to be swamped--not only by us Apple folk, but by curious pedestrians attracted by the window displays and stepping in to check it out.

My scheduled delivery is Monday, but it's still been interesting to watch the FedEx tracking info.

At 5:15 pm eastern on Thursday, my MacBook Air was in Alaska. As of 5:29 am eastern on Friday (today), it's at the FedEx sorting facility near the Atlanta airport. It stopped in Indianapolis along the way. I guess it's not THAT impressive, but I'm surprised it's moved this quickly.

So I guess it's Monday for me as I'm not close to the Atlanta airport.

It may depend on the make and size of the HDD, but I own a 160GB WD passport that works great (single USB, no AC adapter) on all of my Mac laptops -- can't imagine it won't work fine on the Air with it's souped up USB port.

Most usb powered hard drives (not flash drives) do have the Y cable that plugs into 2 usb ports which the mba only has one of. I'm guessing that most usb powered hard drives will not work, but I guess we'll find out in a day or so when people start messing with them.

I'm pretty sure that the 1.8/80 Configure To Order setup I ordered will NOT be an in-store stock item.

Yeah, why bother with the additional 0.2 GHz of clock speed? I figured that with the educational discount, the extra 0.2 GHz (= 12.5% of clock speed) only cost an additional 9.4% in terms of price, so it wasn't too onerous and in my mind, this future proofs the computer a bit longer (in terms of resale value not actual real life/noticeable performance). I figure I can always upgrade the 80GB HD later on as SSD prices inevitably drop.

I'm near 2 Apple Stores, but I'm not wanting to deal with having to scramble for a laptop as I have to work all weekend.

Someone posted yesterday that Fedex charged him $12, to have his MBA delivered on Saturday.

I think he meant that he was able to give her his CC information so she might possibly charge him on Saturday. I also called yesterday and tried to set it up, but was told that I couldn't do that, and only the 'sender' (=Apple?) could amend shipping options... But I'm sure if you are trying persistently enough, someone can do it for you!
