MacRumors Members Photo Directory, Part VI

Background

The five posts above are a directory, alphabetically by member name, of photos of MacRumors members that they have posted to forum threads. The Directory also includes photos attached to member profiles, but not avatars, even if they are photos of the member.

Click on a member name to go to that member's MacRumors profile. Click on a photo link to display the photo.

The photos come primarily from the MacRumors pics! thread, which I monitor. I sometimes include photos from other threads, such as the Self Portraits... (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=63760) thread.

Only photos showing the MacRumors member are included. Photos that show only relatives, friends, pets, or possessions are excluded, as are obviously photoshopped photos. Where a member has posted the URL of a web page hosted elsewhere, I tried to identify the photo they had in mind.

The Directory has no official status at MacRumors. I've maintained it myself since October 2003 (before I was a moderator) and I try to keep it accurate. Any mistakes are my fault. I try to check for updates to the Directory at least twice a week. The most recently posted photos can always be found at the end of the MacRumors pics! (or other) thread, whether or not I have added them to the Directory yet.

Legend

"photo" = photo posted in a forum thread. It will remain available unless the poster or a moderator removes it.

"link to photo" = photo at another web site. It may be changed or removed without warning.

"baby photo" = photo from a much younger age, as a baby or child.

"profile photo" = photo attached to member's profile.

:) = recently added photo.

Additions, deletions, and corrections

If you want your photo added to the Directory: Do not post your photo in this thread. Instead, post your photo in the MacRumors pics! thread. You do not have to ask me to include your photo. Once it is in the MacRumors pics! thread, I'll notice it and add your member name and photo link when I make my next update to the Directory.

If you have attached a photo to your member profile and want it added to the Directory: send me a private message (http://forums.macrumors.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=12149) since I might not otherwise notice it.

If you have posted a photo to a MacRumors thread other than the MacRumors pics! thread and want to have it added to the Directory: send me a private message (http://forums.macrumors.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=12149).

If you are in the Directory and want to be excluded or have certain photos excluded: Send me a private message (http://forums.macrumors.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=12149) and I'll remove your entry when I make my next update to the Directory.

If you spot an error: Send me a private message (http://forums.macrumors.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=12149) and I'll make the correction when I make my next update to the Directory.

If my private message mailbox overflows: I'll catch up as soon as I can.

I wrote a program to help me generate the initial text for the directory and, as you know, when a programmer goofs, the first or last entry is a likely place for errors to show up. I don't think it's a problem if posts in the rest of this thread get off topic, as long as the first 4 are there. It's certainly an unusual thread, because almost all return visitors read the first posts instead of the last posts and, despite all the viewing, most people don't have a reason to subscribe to the thread.

There's probably no way to tell, but I'll bet I have the record (and probably 2nd and 3rd place too) for the most edits to a single post. And not many threads have a #views to #replies ratio of over 100!

When the first three posts eventually get too big (there's a post size limit), something will have to change. Maybe the mods can insert or reorder posts so I can expand the alphabetic list to N posts instead of 3, while leaving them all at the beginning of the thread, or maybe a replacement thread will be needed.

We don't really have too many options for reordering/inserting posts.

If you can figure out a scheme you like, make a new thread and I'll stick and lock it.

The post size issue is going to be the toughest part to get around, but as long as you give yourself enough leeway, it should work.

There is a minor new feature in the MacRumors Members Photo Directory. The top of the first post now shows the total numbers of members and the total number of photo links in the Directory. Since some off-site links take you to multiple photos, the total number of member photos represented is a few dozen more than the number of links.

The current counts are 147 members and 235 photo links.

As of today, the MacRumors Members Photo Directory is fully back in business under the new version of the forum software. All photo links have been rebuilt and tested. As of today, there are 154 forum members represented and 250 photo links.

The Directory has two new features:

1. Where members have posted a photo in their member profile, there is a link to that photo, labeled "profile photo". It will always be first in that member's list of photos.

2. Photos taken when the member was much younger (a baby or a child) are now labeled "baby photo".

A bug in the site software has caused nine photos, belonging to eight MacRumors members, to be lost from their original posts. This causes the links in the Photo Directory to fail also. We do not know what causes this problem in vBulletin or its database. The problem happened once before, last year, so the upgrade to a new version of vBulletin did not fix the problem as we had hoped it would.

The problem is not particular to the MacRumors pics! thread, but missing attachments in that thread are the ones most likely to be noticed, as people use the Photo Directory to look at those photos.

The affected members did nothing wrong; they are just victims of a bug that seems to affect a few attachments at random. The original posts in the MacRumors pics! thread remain, but their attachments are no longer present. I have alerted the affected members and asked them to re-attach their photos or post new ones. In the meantime, the Photo Directory has the word "missing" in front of the affected links.

And now a question for everyone. In the Photo Directory, which would you prefer as the way recently-added photos are marked?

Choice 1 - the word "NEW" (the current method)
Choice 2 - a smilie
Choice 3 - bigger text
Choice 4 - a suitable color (which I'll pick after enormous amounts of color-perception and psychology research)

I'm thinking of switching from Choice 1 to Choice 2.

Examples:
1. Membername: NEW photo
2. Membername: :) photo
3. Membername: photo
4. Membername: photo2 looks good to me dr q.

We have passed 200 members in the Photo Directory as we approach its first birthday, in 2 weeks. We currently have 357 photo links, so by then there should be enough to let you enjoy one photo for each day of the year!

The directory ended 2004 with 234 members and 404 photo links.

The number of members participating increased by 94 over the course of the year.

And, despite the growth in the first three posts in this thread, we haven't yet hit the post size limit. Whew!

Apple (or akamai.net) has taken down our photo from apple.com! :( :mad:

The photo with the three of us in line for the release of Panther is gone:

Maybe they are clearing off disk space to get ready for Tiger's release, and they could no longer afford the disk space for that jpeg, but what a sad state they have left behind. There must be a million broken links to this photo on the Internet now!

With the addition of Cless, the MacRumors Members Photo Directory has reached 250 members. That's one 4,000th of a million MacRumors members!

The Photo Directory has fit into 3 posts since its inception exactly 17 months ago today, but that is about to end. I will soon have to repartition the Photo Directory into 4 (or more) posts to keep each post under the post size limit. Wish me luck.

Member neut has the privilege of being the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. His two new photos caused the MacRumors Members Photo Directory (which occupied 3 posts at the beginning of this thread) to overflow the post size limit, even after I moved photos from one post to another to try to balance them.

So, as of today, the Directory has expanded from three posts to four posts. The 3-post size was sufficient for 17 months. The 4-post size will give the Directory room to keep growing.

... i had actually just planned to re-upload my lost (posted) photos (switched hosting); i ended up adding two new photos to my ever growing list of narcissism. :)

I think it's great to have so many members represented - it makes MacRumors feel that much more like a true community. It's always great to put a face to the name as well and get to know our fellow members better!

in the (i belive first post) thread it explains what the ":)" means and also the difference in "link to photo" and "photo" vs "profile picture" etc
