View Full Version : jailbreak tutorial says 1.1.2 update is needed. 1.1.3 is only available.

I have NOT updated to 1.1.3 at all.

I know it was possible with 1.1.2 being downgraded to 1.1.1 to get apps. I did that. I followed all the steps from the gizmodo video tutortial. I went through each step, including the OkToPrep file. after spending all of that time doing all of that, the final step in the video before running jailbreak on the computer, is/was having the iphone connected with Itunes open, and HAVING to hit "update to 1.1.2" in Itunes. BUT, that's before 1.1.3 update was available. I tried tricking it, and updating it with a 1.1.2 restore file, but that didn't work, even though I hit UPDATE and NOT restore.

so now I just restored it back to 1.1.2.

I am guessing that the only way to accomplish the final step (when you have to hit update to 1.1.3) will only work when there is a jailbreak 1.1.3?

Ah I never thought of how that would effect the jailbreak. I think that Update literally just updates the files, leaving your music and settings in tact but with a Restore it wipes the memory clean and starts again, wiping the Oktoprep file with it :/
Sorry to hear that

yeah I thought so too. even though I tried using the 1.1.2 restore as an update file.

if there was a way to download a file that is ONLY a 1.1.2 update and NOT a restore, then I can finally go through that final step I guess.

I should have decided to jailbreak earlier before this dumb 1.1.3 came out.

Im afraid its gunna have to be a case of waiting for that jailbreak to arrive though :/

gahh, I hope it comes out soon. I was so antsy to finally downgrade my firmware. I was hesitant about it, I don't know why. I didn't want to unlock it, just add apps, so I don't know why I was super nervous. I know restores can fix anything.

I wish that I would have fast forwarded to the end of the tutorial when he showed updating to 1.1.2 in itunes. I would not have wasted 2+ hours figuring out the downgrade, since it was all useless anyway.

oh well, I'll just keep my 1.1.2 for now.

After reading through a TUAW article about how he's trying to jailbreak 1.1.3 I came across this
I'm heading back to iTunes, doing an option-Update and selecting the 1.1.2 firmware.

This may help you if you are still wanting to update to 1.1.2

hm how did he have the option to update to 1.1.2 firmware and not 1.1.3 in Itunes?

is it because I have the latest version of Itunes?

Im not too sure. I think what they meant was holding down Option when clicking Update, much like the way you do Option-Restore when downgrading to 1.1.1

agnespie
Jan 16, 2008, 02:06 PM
oh wait, I said I did hit OPTION on my keyboard along with the UPDATE button. and I clicked on my 1.1.2 restore file. but it just restored it instead and erased all my jailbreak downloads and put me back to where I started. it's a restore file, it didnt read it as an update even though I did NOT hit restore. if there was a way to download a 1.1.2 update file, then that would probably work.

Oh right, sorry ;)
But AFAIK there's no way to manually download the 1.1.2 update file. Up until this point there was no need due to 1.1.2 being the most recent version. A google search may turn up some results however

agnespie, I'm in EXACTLY the same boat as you! I didn't know 1.1.3 was coming out yesterday, so I finally decided to give the jailbreak and SIM unlock a try. I had 1.1.2 and went through the instructions in the n00bs guide. I got AppTapp installed and guess what comes next. Yep. Letting iTunes update you to 1.1.2. DOH! If only I wasn't so ignorant and read through the instructions again (even though I'd already read through it three times in the past couple months). Well, I'll be keeping my eye on this thread and others for a solution. Let me know if you find something. Until then, I wonder if I should stick with my jailbroken 1.1.1 phone that won't let me use the phone features, or if I should go ahead and update to 1.1.3. hmmmm....

agnespie

my opinion is, don't update to 1.1.3. the new features don't seem that great at all, especially compared to jailbreaking and getting 385435435 3rd party apps. I think we should just sit tight and be patient.

Because if I do that, it'll erase all of the jailbreaking I did, right? I just needed to update it so I can keep my iPhone jailbroken and make the phone functions work. If I'm gonna lose all the jailbreaking I did, then I'd rather just update to 1.1.3.

FYI, she (Erica Sadun) is one of the most prominent iPhone hackers out there, and has literally written dozens of apps...might be polite to at least call her by the correct gender ;)

In another post, she noted that once you upgrade to 1.1.3, even if you successfully downgrade to a previous version you won't be able to use the phone functionality any more. Erica talks about that here (http://www.tuaw.com/2008/01/16/downgrading-your-1-1-3-iphone-or-ipod-touch/).

What if I just upgrade to 1.1.3. Is it going to brick my iPhone, or will it just wipe out all the 3rd party apps and treat it like an un-jailbroken iPhone?

so wait, sorrycharlie. youve never actually put 3rd party apps on your phone yet, right? you were just like me, and just recently tried to do it amnd almost completed the process but couldnt because Itunes only has 1.1.3 as an update, and not 1.1.2, right?

really, the first time doing jailbreak took me a whileeee to figure out (maybe little over an hour), and I was disappointed knowing that I could not complete one of the final stages: udpate to 1.1.2 on Itunes.

but now when I think about it, doing it all over again will seriously take what, maybe not even 10 minutes? I know exactly how to do it now. so, restoring back to 1.1.2 is really the only best option here.

restore to 1.1.2 and use your phone regularly. we just have to be patient for a jailbreak that will work with a 1.1.3 update in the final step.

After I found out I couldn't update to 1.1.2 anymore, I did start installing some 3rd party apps like SummerBoard and the NES emulator. I just can't use the phone features, so I have to use my old Samsung SYNC phone until I can get my iPhone to work with my SIM card again.

soo, it looks like I'm screwed?

I just bought an iphone yesterday (was waiting till after the keynote) and after sifting through the endless literature out there on hacking the phone, determined that I needed to jailbreak the iphone so that I could use my current AT&T sim card that is currently in my samsung. (I don't want to activate with AT&T because (1) afraid of commitment and (2) AT&T said that they do not allow iphones on business accounts so I'd have to give up my corporate discount.

The iphone I bought came loaded with 1.1.2 so i downgraded to 1.1.1 and everything was going fine until I found out there is no option to upgrade to 1.1.2 in itunes. Thus, I'm left with no iphone for now.

Anyway, just wanted to rant a bit and hope that someone can offer some help.

Thanks!

trying this out right now but this guy says he got it to work

I had that same issue and I'm also using iTunes 7.6. However, I let iTunes activate my phone again which when I did the jailbreak using the .jar file, it took me back to square one. This happens if you don't click the eject button on iTunes. Basically at this point you want to downgrade back to 1.1.1 by getting the 1.1.1 firmware and clicking restore while either holding shift for windows or option for mac and starting the process over. Just make sure that once you click UPDATE again to update back to 1.1.2, once the process is completed, click EJECT in iTunes. If you don't do this, it will not jailbreak 1.1.2. (at least it didn't for me and I had to start over). Then run the jailbreak.jar file and let it complete the process. Once my phone rebooted, it was jailbroken with 1.1.2. Also, consider backing up your contacts by syncing it before you do the restore, otherwise you could loose em.

Here was the step by step instructions that I wrote this afternoon for anyone else who is confused. I tried it with a few friends who also had the same issue and it worked perfectly. I also updated the Wiki pages for anyone who is new and still has the 1.1.1 firmware.

As of today I was still running the 1.1.1 update for my iPhone. I wanted to update to 1.1.2 now that 1.1.3 was out and was just going to wait until the new update was jailbroken before I updated to 1.1.3.

1. Make sure you have the 1.1.1 firmware.
2. Make sure it has been jailbroken. Visit: www.jailbreakme.com from your Iphone and follow the on screen instructions.
3. Once the iPhone has restarted, open up the newly created Installer.app from your dashboard.
4. Click Install, go to Tweaks 1.1.1 and install the OktoPrep.
5. Download the 1.1.2 jailbreak software. Were going to need it in a bit: Click Here
5. Open up ITunes and download the 1.1.2 Firmware Here
6. Connect your iPhone and hold shift for windows users or option for mac users and click update.
7. Navigate to the downloaded 1.1.2 firmware file and click ok.
8. Let the iPhone reboot itself and when you see the Activate iPhone Connect to iTunes message, immediately click the eject button in iTunes. Failure to click eject resulted in me starting the process all over again.
9. Open up the jailbreak.jar file in the jailbreak 1.1.2 software we downloaded earlier.
10. Enable shell access if you want but click the jailbreak button. The software will go through a few steps and when your finished you should have a jailbroken 1.1.2 iPhone.

These are the exact steps I ran this afternoon and it worked perfectly. I never received any iTunes error.

It may be that having read this thread rather quickly I have not fully understood the problems that people are experiencing. If so please forgive me but some of the posts are a little confusing.

If I understand the position correctly it seems that some of you fear that Jailbreak for 1.1.2 is not now available because 1.1.3 is out. This is not so.

Follow this excellent guide which is in three parts. Whilst it is true that iTunes will no longer let you automatically upgrade back to 1.1.2, there is a manual work around which is explained in the third section of the guide which has been updated in the last 24 hours.

so I should eject before the iphone reboots after updating with the 1.1.2, like after I get that notification about X amount of seconds? i'm still little confused with the timing of the ejection.

right after the iphone screen changed I ejected it. I don't think the timing is as important as the fact that you shouldn't do anything else other than eject the iphone and then quit itunes.

Can i get a simple yes or no answer here....

I have a jailbroken 1.1.2 OTB iPhone....

I have NOT upgraded to 1.1.3.

If, hypothetically, my iPhone needs to be restored (screen showing 'please connect to itunes', etc) i can still restore to 1.1.1, upgrade to 1.1.2 and jailbreak it. Using the method shown on the above linked pages?

As long as you go nowhere near 1.1.3 you can still jailbreak. If you go to 1.1.3 there is presently no way back.

It's good to know that we're not alone. :) What you can do, is download the 1.1.2.ipsw restore file, put it on your desktop or somewhere you can find it then also download the itunes version 7.4. You might have to remove the itunes version you have right now in order for you to install the older version. iTunes 7.6 will not let you upgrade to 1.1.2! Now if your using a MAC i think you would press option + restore, on a PC you would press shift + restore then a popup should come up for you, to choose which firmware you would like to use, find the 1.1.2.ipsw file you downloaded and double click it then itunes should finish the restore. One more thing, was your iphone a OOB 1.1.2 w/ the 4.6 bootloader or was it 1.1.1 OOB. Anyway, no harm trying it, right it might just work. It did for me!!! Mine was 1.1.1 OOB. Good luck!!!
