upgraded to leopard - now wifi can't connect to ANY networks! Help!

After upgrading to leopard 10.5 from 10.3, now I can't connect to any of the several unsecured wifi networks I used to connect to. I see the network names show up in the airport menu bar icon, I select one, and then it doesn't connect. When I go to the network system pre and choose a network name to connect to, it says it's attempting to connect for about 3 to 5 seconds and then reports back 'connection timeout.'

I need my wifi back!
