Yes! Sweet! I've been waiting for this game for years now. Unfortunately, I doubt it'll run well on my MacBook. Guess I'll have to get the Windows version.

I want this game real bad, but we knew this already didn't we?

It's about time, I thought they had given up on this game.

Heh, I personally thought this game died out on the vine.

Maybe its like Duke Nukem Forever. :D

That was obvious really. It's coming out on every platform known to man, it's the next "The Sims".

I hope they make some kind of web interface to link them all. Say you have it on your Mac/PC and you're away. It would be nice to log onto some site and do a little tweaking, or whatever you do in Spore. That'd push it outside the box.

Duke Nukem wha??

That was a game that has been in development since 1997...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Nukem_Forever

Currently their site still says the following... LOL
"No, you cannot pre-order the game. If you see some online store saying "We are taking pre-orders", they're just trying to get your money (they usually also make up their own supposed "insider release date info", too). There is no release date set, we are not taking pre-orders for the game. End of story."

Spore will be great on multi platforms! Will definitely get it.

Nice. What's notable isn't that Spore is coming to the mac (almost all of Maxis' games have made it, and The Sims is a gigantic hit on the mac) but that it's going to be a simultaneous release. Let's hope EA delivers on its promises.

Yeah, that's what I though – simultaneous release ftw! :o

It'll most likely to be Intel only cider port... But I'll get the mac version over the windows version any time.

I hope you all remember that every single of TransGaming's ports were buggy, slow or had graphical glitches.

People don't realize that this isn't like an Aspyr or MacSoft port where they actually develop the game for mac or even like previous Sim games -- this is just a wrapper to a windows game.

Anyone who played C&C3 with BootCamp as well as C&C3 'mac' will know the performance hit as well as other glitches.

EA is trying to get the quick buck -- they failed last time because games were so late after the PC releases...

I know, Spore looks amazing and has been in development forever, and I hope its a good port, but it's really really really reliant of improvements of this 'wrapper' and not good coding hours by an actual mac gaming shop.

Good news indeed. Time to cancel my year and a half old pre-order for the Windows version and reorder for the Mac.

I played spore today on an Imac at Macworld. I was amazed at how highly easily customizable the creatures really are. No multiplayer, but I'm still definitely buying it for sure!

a simultaneous release is great - but how quickly do you think they'll release the expansion packs compared to the windows release.

actually - how close were the expansion pack releases for the sims/sims2?

This is great news for Mac Gamers. Let's just hope it's not a crappy port that plays twice as well in Boot Camp... which is probably will be.

Why can't everyone be as good as Blizzard.

I hope they take the Blizzard approach and have the disc be a hybrid (PC and Mac version on the same disc)

That way if the TransGaming port sucks maybe I will consider using bootcamp
Really I wish they would just go all the way like Blizzard and do a truly native Mac version.

Would this be like the 'simultaneous (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/06/11/wwdc-game-on/)' releases of Madden 2008, and Tiger Woods 2008?

Wow how helpful you are!
Seriously people, why even feel the need to put people down?
Just go out there and get the info they want.

Good news! I hope it's everything they've said it would be-- I've been waiting for this one.

I'm curious to hear (or be pointed to) more information on problems with the TransGaming scheme. The concept has struck me as both obvious, and incredibly difficult to pull off. I'm curious how well they've made it work.

Given the resource demands of most games, I'm kind of surprised that they haven't just dumped the bulky OSs and rolled their own...

I sure hope not!

I've been reading about this one for ages. Sounds really cool. I'm glad to see it confirmed for Mac. Simultaneous release, no less. (Cider has its place!)

is this sim city on 'roids?

If I recall, this is every videogame genre rolled into one.

- Arcade: as an amoeba, you run around and eat things, brainlessly
- First Person Shooter: As some creature, you run around and eat things, but this time you have a brian
- Strategy: You get a whole civilization of creatures and make building or something.
- Space: Your creatures leave their planet.

Sign me up, eh?

I recall Leo Laporte talking about this over a year ago on TWiT. Wondered what had happened to the project.

The idea is simple. You start off with a simple cell structured life-form and eat other in order to survive and evolve. What you eat in these early stages forms what creature you will evolve into. You then move onto the next stages of evolution and begin to develop a more intelligent life-form. Then you basically form a colony and can either conquer the area/planet based on whether you rage war or form coalitions with others. My guess is potentially using natural selection you will overturn any allies. Then you leave your planet in order to do the same to other planets in your system and finally try to venture towards other solar systems.

I think that covers the basic premise of the game. Sounds like fun, but potentially a huge strategy game after the first couple of stages.

Ditto. I've been crabbily waiting for this game for YEEEEAAAARRS. I, too, had often wondered if Will had let the game dissolve into Duke Nukem Forever territory.
(same thing with Star Craft: Ghost.. remember that?)

I dont know if you ever got to visit the 3D Realms site in the 90's but it had a FAQ which had 1 question for some months which was:

Q. When will it be done?
A. When its done.

That became their tagline for so many years, "it will be done when it's done"
:p

Exactly, and thats what is worrying me. EA taking the easy way out and producing what will be interpreted as crappy games because they wont take the time to recode.

Does anyone know when this game will be released in the US/UK?

Play.com reckons 3rd March for the UK for both Mac and PC. Not that that's anything like final.
