Remote control thru headphone socket only ?

If Apple were to (finally) come out with a set of headphones with volume control and track skip would they need connectors for the headphone socket and the data port or could it be done just through the headphone socket ?

It could be done from the headphone socket it apple put a compatible (4 contact) socket in the touch. However they'll probably just release one that goes into the dock connector.

hmm thats a shame, suppose I should have researched this before I bought one but the lack of a remote is a big problem for me on my daily commute. Why they couldn't have had an elegant one/two squeeze headphone cord like for the iPhone is a mystery to me.

What with the apps needing wi-fi to work I'm starting to want an iPhone to be honest - they're just so damn expensive here in the UK !
