Hi guys,

A friend of mine has entrusted me with his Powerbook G4 which he seems to have royally screwed up.

When I started it up, I get the folder with the question mark.

When I try and reboot with "option" selected. I get a lock, a place where I can enter some sort of password and the arrow pointing to the right.

What has he done? Will Disk Warrior fix this?

I have till Monday, I hope I can untangle the mess he's made. ;)

Sounds like there's a firmware password enabled. Ask your friend what it is so you can then reinstall the operating system from the supplied discs. :)

Just called him, he thinks he pressed a bunch of random keys on the keyboard and doesn't remember what the password is.

He doesn't have the original install disk anymore, is he DOA?

I wonder if I can just wipe it somehow, or if he has to take it into a mac dealer?

Does the old trick of removing or adding RAM, then resetting the PRAM 3 times work on that model? Used to do the trick on G3 Macs.

EDIT : Found this, which suggests it should work on a PowerBook. Not exactly an official source though.
