How to install OS X on external drive.....?

i am trying to install OS X 10.4 TIger on an external 200 GB firewire 800 drive, but when i put in the install DVD in my macboo pro, it tells me that you cannot install Mac OS X on this drive....... what's going on ?

and now i cannot eject the install DVD .......

help !!!
