Nope, I have Netflix and that works fine for me. And figuring I can can get the same rental features from Comcast for only a buck more, it doesn't make sense to fork out the $230 for the :apple:TV, figuring that I already have Netflix and Comcast, the :apple:TV just doesn't make sense. And although illegal, if I really wanted to, I could hand-brake my Netflix rentals to my iPod touch to watch them on the go, but I rarely have enough time to watch a full movie while on the go.

I rented my first movie from iTunes on Saturday and will rent more. The movie took about two hours to download on my DSL connection. Looking forward to when Apple adds all kinds of movies in the next few months.

Depends on UK pricing. If the cost is jacked up by the same amount as the TV shows, then no.

Nope sorry not interested even though I have been a long time Mac user I use my Apple machines for video and photo editing. I use Photoshop and Final Cut for all my work, maybe since I am older I never seem to catch on to the whole Apple gadget line of products like the iPod, Apple TV, iPhone etc. Im sure its a younger generation thing renting movies and downloading songs etc. enjoy :)

European rentals may be a long time coming (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/21/technology/21video.html?_r=1&oref=slogin).

I have been a longtime mac user and I use my mac for photoshop, 3d modeling and rendering, music, photos, and video. I also own an iPod and am interested in media like iTunes rentals. I'm sure that people in my generation like to rent movies and download songs, etc. :)

Yes, I will rent movies but I don't know about buying an :apple:TV. Through iTunes I just hook up my laptop to my HDTV and voila! Yes I can rent from my cable company but It's a dollar cheaper so, I'm all for it.

Probably every once in awhile, despite my Netflix membership...but I'll probably wait until they get better selection. Right now the ones available aren't really my taste. It's a good idea, though. :)

Maybe, the one thing I'm waiting on right now is for more movies with closed captioning. There are some, yes, but only one or two I'm mildly interested in seeing. So, it depends on the selection as well for me.

I'd consider it if it was available to me, but it wont be for a while... although hopefully by the time it is there'll be a wide selection to choose from.

I only wish the movie rentals were announced a couple months earlier and I hadn't sold my soul to DirecTV. Now I've got the South Carolina state flower on my roof.

Yes when they (Apple) hooks up with Lynda.com & or Total Training. I can get action flicks for a dollar out of a vending machine but the software tutorials & hard to find documentaries are going to be the true gold for internet rental companies.

Subtitles and Captions are important to many people and used on a variety gadgets in different environments where volume is key. Lip reading and hearing whispers is problematic. Its a no brainer to have them included on each rental.:apple:

Sky is getting stupidly expensive given how much rubbish is available- and what you can now get on Freeview. With AppleTV having movies, it would make is so much easier to access movies to watch rather than needing to head down to the dvd shop.

No... I have Netflix and love it. I can have up to four movies at a time, can keep them as long as I want and watch them as often as I like without any extra charges. They currently offer standard DVD, HD DVD and Blue-Ray all for the same price (although I understand they are going to drop HD DVD eventually). They have an astounding collection, and they have streamlined the mailing process so much that we are amazed how fast we receive our new movies. (You can even choose to view a movie instantly on your computer.) With the option to have up to four movies at a time at home, we end up with a new movie every night. How much would that cost through iTunes?
Sorry Apple. I love, love, love ya, but I'm sticking with Netflix on this one.

I recently rented two movies so far and it was great. I didn't mind the 24 hour rental period all that much. I just watched it at night and then came back the next night and re-watched it once more. I currently have a 99 cents rental I have been meaning to watch. But overall I like it. $10+ is too steep for me to be buying a digital movie; I'm frugal.. and a poor college student. ;) So rentals are perfect. They also look great on my new 20-inch cinema display!

Absolutely! This is one of the main reason why I purchased apple tv. Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to rent a movie yet; however, I am very much looking forward to the experience.

I found that on your average cable/dsl internet connection renting is worthless because it takes too long before you can watch it. It's much faster and cheaper to drive 3 minutes to the store and rent for 99¢ from the rental box. I had to wait to watch an itunes rented movie until the next day because I wanted to watch it within "30 seconds" or at least 15 minutes or so. Decided not to wait for it that night.

Yes, for portable viewing, and I'll also likely purchase an ATV in the future.
As for ripping Netflix rentals for ownership: Lame. Admitting it publicly: Stupid.
I have Netflix now, and use the streaming option (just watched Helvetica), and also rent BR movies. I've gotten 3 that were cracked/unviewable recently, which if it happens again, I'll drop them and use hulu and iTunes.

I have Netflix and love it. Five films out at a time. When I buy the MBP I'll also be watching films directly on the Netflix site using Vista or XP (they don't support Apple's OS at this time). So, I'm not a great candidate for renting from iTunes at this time.

The Apple TV is a very attractive device to me. I haven't purchased one yet, but I may in the near future.
This is how I want to rent movies. I purchased an XBox 360 thinking this would fulfill my needs, and it would, except the movie selection is downright terrible. And hasn't improved over the passed 6 months.
Like others, I don't really want to purchase another device to rent movies. But if apple can do it right (which I suspect they will) by getting the selection nothing less than spectacular, then I'll be happily purchasing an Apple TV.

I've rented a couple. Normally just when I'm feeling really lazy and want to watch a certain movie that I don't already own immediately. It is great for instant gratification, whereas Bittorrent is not.

As other also mentioned, I also will need more than 24 hours to watch a movie. My finance' and I live very busy lives, and it isn't uncommon for us to have to get up and stop watching a movie half way through and finish it the next day or even the day after that.
So I will wait to buy an Apple TV until you get at least 48 hours (preferably 56) to start and finish a movie.

Renting is okay for .99 just the time limit but hey, at the spare of the moment it could save you a trip of leaving your home to the rental store and is more convienent. however, if you own an xbox 360 I suppose you could rent from there too and alot of the movies now come in HD on there and it's better watching it on your tv than on your computer to an extent. unless you of course have your computer hooked up to your tv

I would drop netflix if Itunes has some kind of subscription service.
Imagine Netflix, just done via apple TV. Maybe you would be able to watch 3 movies per day or like, 6 Tv episodes per day while paying a flat monthly fee. Maybe they could combine it with unlimited (legal) music.
You could pay a higher fee if you wanted to watch a few more episodes.
Speaking of that, The same could be done for software via partnerships with adobe.

No.... Not until it comes up with something like Netflix. I don't want to have to watch a movie within 24 hours after I start it. To many things happen and I might need to watch it after the 24hour mark is started.

When it's available in The Netherlands, definitely.
I pay 3.25 for 1 library movie here and I get it for a week.
5 euro's for a new movie and you get it 1 day.
I'd rather have 3$ (what's the euro price gonna be, hoping lower than 3?) and not have to go to the store, not to worry about bringing it back, and it's cheaper.
Don't even start about new movies, iTunes would be way better.
Only thing left is to get it to The Netherlands.

I can't see doing that in my household.
Redbox.com rents for $1 a night. Downloading over an hour or two doesn't make sense when we can pick a movie up at the grocery store along with my popcorn and drinks.
I like the idea but until we get a wider broadband, I think that it'll just be too much of a hassle. Finally, I really need LESS time in front of my computer and not more.
I suppose you could say that gas to the grocery store will cost me more but I actually don't mind stopping by the store on the way back from an appointment with a client. Grocery stores are my last refuge in a hectic world. :)

I agree 100% I love the flexibility of netflix because you can keep the movies as long as you would like which is perfect especially if something comes up that you have to stop watching and come back to it a few days later.

I've used NetFlix. And, it works fine. Every so many days, a new movie arrives, and I put the old ones in the drop box.
Basically, they show up as fast as I returned them. The faster I returned them, the faster more arrive. And, no per movie fee. Just as many as I can watch for one flat rate.
And, if I really like one, I can keep it for a while and keep watching it.
There are so many times that we'll start a movie at the end of the day, and find ourselves too tired to finish it (from the day with kids and whatever else), and decide to watch the rest the next evening. If we had Apple's downloads, it would be too late, we'd never get to finish watching it.
If Apple offered a flat rate unlimited movies for a monthly subscription, then it might be attractive.
24-hour limits, no thank you.

Now that Canada has rentals, I can finally weigh in, and the answer is: a qualified yes.
We tried it last week, and were happy -- It took 45 minutes to download a 2 hour movie (basic cable connection), quality was fine (piped to our flatscreen), and we have a 48 hour window to watch. That makes it more convenient than the local video conglomerate, and is priced a bit cheaper.
We had to cancel our subscription service (zip.ca) because it had turned into a "we'll send you dvd's when we feel like it" service, so there's no competition there.
Qualified because there are two deal killers --
(1) Selection. I'm not sure what the US store is like, but honestly the Canadian one has no movies. I count maybe 8 that I would want to watch (and some of those I've already seen)
(2) Closed captioning -- my wife has trouble with accents, and with about 1/4 of the movies we watch we turn on closed captioning, Which doesn't seem to be provided, and I can't even figure out how to find that out before renting. The technology is there why don't they use it?
Until those are solved we won't be renting any other movies.
Then there are the annoyances--
(1) HD only on Apple TV. Sorry I don't like crippling a service to sell hardware that's not good for much else.
(2) It doesn't show up in the Movies list in Front Row. What gives? Again, I guess this is to force you to buy an Apple TV?
Those aren't deal breakers, after all I don't have an HD player so I'm not getting those anyway, and sure I can walk over to the laptop and start the movie, but it certainly stands between being good and being a great service.

3-4$ isn't bad, but I don't think that I would want to get anything less than DVD quality. I'm one of those nit-picky people where if the screen isn't perfect, it bother's me!
Still, couldn't people just put the video through the video out on their MB/MBP to a DV Converter box to iMovie and steal it? I mean, it just seems too easy for people to pirate this. Then again, it's easier for people that rip DVDs since they have programs to do all the work for them. What ev!

Nope. Call me old fashioned but I'd rather get off my ass and go visit a video rental. It makes getting home and watching the movie all the more special =)
