I hear a new updated version of the macbook pro will be coming out anytime now, and I would hate to see that happen considering i just bought one. I have until Feb. 2 to, and would make me cash out an extra 200$ for restocking. FYI i bought the base one 1999$

so should i:
a) wait till jan 28-Feb1 and see if there is any more news. if there is on a set date, return it. if not, keep the one i got now

b) return it and wait

c) keep what i have

i used a student discount.. if i return it will i still be able to use the student discount on the second one? thanks for your help

Id at least keep it till the end of january. Then decide what you want to do. Although I really want to believe it will be released this week or the next I doubt it will be. I almost bought one over the weekend but had card problems.

If you have the patience to wait, you should wait. At least for me I would be pissed off if I bought one and a month later a new one with a multi-touch trackpad came out.

Not sure where you're from but in the UK, the HE discount only terms state that you're only entitled to one notebook, one desktop, and one Mac Mini (not sure what they class that as then) per academic year.

I would just keep your notebook. If you're not happy with it, sell it and get what would make you happy.

In my case, amazon is basically selling a new mbp at the refurb price (after a rebate, and by virtue of zero sales tax), so I'm planning to order one tomorrow.

I'll wait for the next-next gen macbook pro with the montevina chipset :)

is it worth paying the restocking fee? I know dropping a large sum of $ into anything can be unsettling (especially if there might be a "new and improved" version on the horizon). I am/have been struggling with this very question for months now: when should I buy? what if?.... Just goes to show how much we are deeply conditioned by this consumerist mentality. As many others on this forum will tell you: if the current model has everything that you actually need, and if you are willing and able to pay for it, and if you do not want to wait for an indeterminate period of time, then do yourself a favor and KEEP your MBP.

And by all means, ENJOY it without regret or reservation (which is after all, a fabricated sense anyway). Heed not those who wait anxiously and who are engaged in an endless cackle of speculation and commiseration. Ask yourself, does an impending update really change the relationship between you and your laptop?? Or more importantly, does it make you any less (or more) of a person?

Yes I read that too, yet if one is returned does that still count as ur one laptop..

If you don't like it for some reason then sure return it. If you are doing this just in the hopes of something better than ask yourself "why did I buy it to begin with?"

I think you should keep it. I sat on the fence waiting for the G5 Powerbooks for so long.....that I still have an iBook G4. If you pin your hopes on it actually coming out this month....you know that means it won't come out until June. Buy it when you need it... not when the new one is rumored.

Five years from now, you'll look back and laugh at the thought that you ever spent time worrying over whether to keep a 2ghz laptop or trade it in for another 2ghz laptop. The problem with greed is how easily it clouds better judgement.

I don't see them coming out for at least a month...

I'd just keep it. If you are sooooo smitten by the new one, you can always sell the one you have on eBay and get a healthy sum for it. But returning it and living in this state of limbo, checking the Apple site every tuesday, wishing for your new computer.... that doesn't sound like the life you were born to live.

I'm not sure. I would contact Apple and ask them because I honestly don't know.

I bought a MBP on Jan. 15th, after the keynote. I have no intentions of taking it back, paying the re-stock fee and then hoping for a new one, even 2 weeks from now is too long for me. I have already enjoyed this laptop so much! To get a small speed increase and more battery life, means nothing to me. The touch-pad, I don't care about that either. The only thing that would make me jealous is if a newer keyboard came out, it is taking some getting used too on the MBP... it's a very slippery/light touch to it. I'm getting much better, but it took a learning-curve.

I say keep what you have!

I bought My MBP on December 27 and the new update rumors doesn't make me regret my purchase. I am very satisfied with my new notebook and it responds to my needs. I got the base model, upgraded the ram and hd. The processor is very fast, the screen is great, and mostly important; everything works perfectly. An update will not bother me because the current MBP is perfect for my needs.

Ask yourself if you like your notebook; if you do, keep it!! :p

I'm not sure. I would contact Apple and ask them because I honestly don't know.

Last year was the first time I purchased an apple product. A Black MacBook which I returned a week later because they updated the MBPs in June? Anyway I got the HE discount on both notebooks. After realizing that selling the MBP was a mistake I bought a White MacBook on the 1st. Well... after seeing that MacWorld was on the 15th and there was speculation of a 13" MBP I returned it on the 9th.

And guess what... if there isn't an update by the next two weeks I'm going back for another MBP. (Yeah, Apple is making a killing off of me) Anyway, no one gave me and problems about getting the 2nd HE discount. I would assume if you're exchanging or returning it to later get a different notebook you should be alright. It's probably for people who want to buy multiple laptops per year.

I bought the same MBP on the 19th too. I love it so far. I tend not to measure the success of my purchases by how quickly something comes out to replace it. That can drive you whacky, you either are always waiting or always disappointed. Enjoy what you purchased.

Just bought mine in early Jan as well. Despite all the rumors, I wouldn't consider sending mine back simply due to the fact that if there are upgrades, it won't make or break my enjoyment of my current MBP. I say, keep it.

once i clear up some contract problems with at&t, i'll be buying an iphone. i was going to wait for 3g and 16gb, but i decided to go for it.

just because something newer or better comes out, doesn't mean your laptop will work any less well. :)

Keep it. Its not worth losing the extra money. The processor speed increase is fairly marginal, and while it sounds pretty cool, I dont think its worth returning a notebook for.

Honestly, you ought to hang onto your current MBPro. The current iteration is really very capable and you can't expect any real leaps for another 8 months (Merom - Nehalem).

See if you can even push your new MBPro to its performance limits. I haven't and I output DVI to a 30" ACD.

If you really need to have the newest and best then wait until the rumored NEW MBPro's show up as refurbs on Apple.com and sell yours on eBay.

Hi Everyone, I'm a long-time reader first-time poster in this forum, but I had to clear this up for everyone:

The higher education discount is the most easily abused discount I've ever been privy to. I've ordered every Apple product I've ever owned through the HE store, and how do you think they verified that I was a student?

They didn't. They never do. They ask me every time for the zip code of my school, and then the name of it, but that's it. No Student I.D. Nothing.

I found this out when my dad was going to buy an ipod (back when the video ipods first came out), and I told him to use my student discount since I wasn't going to be buying an ipod that year. Much to my surprise, the ipod arrived without him ever asking about my i.d. number or anything.

So, bottom line, they don't know if you're actually a student, and they probably don't know if you've already used your discount. Maybe (just, maybe) they can tell if you use the same apple ID, but that's easily duplicated.

I'm not trying to tell anyone to scam apple, god knows I haven't had the privilege of buying multiple laptops a year (even at education prices...). But in your case, it seems pretty legitimate, so go for it.

One more thing: It took me a long time to get over my "newest shiniest thing" complex. Don't feed yours! It's not healthy for you or your wallet!

I got an imac yesterday, and was tempted to use the student discount, I didnt for two reasons. First, Im a "I want it now" person, and the Apple store is only 30 minutes away, second, the student discount really isnt all that much, I got the 24"/2.4 imac, and I think the discount would have saved about 50 or 100 bucks...

I converted over on the 19th, and i'll tell you this. If they upgrade the MBP within the 2 weeks I might replace mine for the $179 difference. It depends on how much of an update it is, other than that if it doesn't change by Feb 2nd then I'll be happy with the version I have.

I would take it back.....updated MPBs are definitely coming soon. I'm not paying $2100CAD for a "soon to be outdated" machine. I want the newest technology in there.

I disagree: the forthcoming update is going to be minor at best. Penryn bump which results in no real speed increase, but a bit of battery life increase (20 to 30 min, MAX).

You might see Multitouch, but I really doubt it.

I think Fall'08 will be the real update.

I could be wrong.

ah well I don't know, I feel a macbook pro minor update coming though. Just the Penryn speed bump. For $2100CAD, I'd still take a 20-30min battery life increase over the old.

Erm I believe you can't return BTO items. Someone might have to correct me on this one.

"Apple offers certain products that may be custom-configured to your specifications, and Apple encourages you to review your order carefully. Since a custom-configured product is built to your specifications, the order cannot be changed, modified, or canceled once your order is in production. Please review Apple’s return and refund policy carefully before ordering."

I believe your only remaining options are if it is:
- DOA
- Superseded

You have no recourse otherwise.

By BTO do you mean something upgraded during the checkout? If so, its not. It was bought at an apple store standard. Although, do u know if they take returns on stuff that had software downloaded from the internet (such as limewire, or i put office on it)..

in which case, would redownloading mac os x cover allt aht up
