Apple has announced the addition of a pink 8GB iPod nano to its lineup.

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/01/22/090025-pink.png

The much-requested pink iPod nano is available immediately in an 8GB model for $199. iPod nano features a two-inch display which lets users watch the brand new iTunes(R) Movie Rentals, or TV shows and music videos purchased from the iTunes Store. iPod nano delivers up to 24 hours of audio playback or five hours of video playback on a single charge* and is encased in a beautiful all-metal design made with anodized aluminum and polished stainless steel, which is also available in silver, black, blue, green and a (PRODUCT) RED special edition.

The pink iPod nano is available worldwide immediately, however so far only the US Apple Store has been updated. We have heard that some UK retailers have already received stock.

Given the Apple TV is subsidised by movie rentals (hence price drop). When do we see a price drop for iPods/iPhone too?

btw. a pink metallic Macbook (not necessarily Pro) would sell like hot cakes.

I believe Apple has to pay the RIAA some money for each iPod sold. Steve said himself that most iPods have pirated music on them because people are fed up with DRM so much. You also pay that fee when you buy a CD or DVD burning drive.

There are neat transparent snap on cases for Macbook. They make it a little thicker but it's a neat protection and it looks pretty neat. Just google "macbook" and "case".

There's places where this is/was true. Canada was looking to pass a measure like this (it failed) - it may have even been a law but only applied to certain things, and not iPods ad the expansion is what failed. France either had one or does have one or was considering one... It's not true in the US but that doesn't make it universally untrue. In the US you pay a tax on blank CDs labeled for use as music discs (and CD to CD stand alone recorders often won't use ones that aren't marked for music)... thinking that extended to iPods isn't all the far fetched.

Honestly, I wish they did. It would legitimize P2P downloads. You paid them for SOMETHING so it would give you the legal right to copy music onto the device.

And how much of each sale is being donated to Breast Cancer Research?

I didn't realize that breast cancer research had trademarked the color pink and that corporations can only create a product that appeals to a large segment of the population based on color if they donate a portion of their profits to something that has "claimed" that color. Sorry, I don't want you to think I'm picking just on you. Why anybody should even speculate that Apple should be donating to breast cancer research is beyond me. I they suppose Apple should donate a portion of their profits for any object of any color.

Nope, that was the Zune.

Why? Because it doesn't suit you? No matter what way you dice it, this is a new product. More importantly, it is a new Apple product and this is, after all, an Apple-oriented website.

In any case, I think it's great. Whilst I will probably refrain from purchasing one for myself, it's good to see that they are listening to customers who want more choice.

If my lady friend didn't already have an iPod touch, she would likely be all over this.

unless this is the first 3G nano, then it's just a new color... it is the EXACT same thing as all of the other 3G nanos, only with pink metal on the outside. not a new product, meaning not the first 3G nano, just a new color for the 3G nano. who cares if it's on the front page, honestly, all the front page is is a few pictorial links and the nav bar...

Wife: "Have you seen the new pink iPod Nano?"

Me: "Um, there's isn't a pink iPod Nano."

Wife: "Yes there is. Someone at work had one and showed it to me. I really want one. It looks nice."

Me: "No, dear. There isn't a pink iPod Nano. They must have had a skin on it."

Wife: "No, there wasn't a sleeve on it or anything. It was a pink one."

Me: (laughing.) "Okay, sweetie, but Apple doesn't make that so maybe it was a third party paint job or something. And you're sure it was one of the newer wide iPod Nanos, the ones that can play video?"

Wife: Yes. And it was pink.

I left that conversation convinced my wife was confusing what she saw for something else, but now this news today. I'm going to have to find out who exactly she was talking to at her workplace and why they apparently had an actual pink iPod Nano a week ahead of this announcement.

I have to say, I'm not crazy about any of the colors, it would be nice to have at least one dark color (besides black) instead of all pastels. Even the red one should be more red, it looks more on the pinkish side right now.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good nano case? I just got the iSkin, and it's super lame, I need to take it back and try something else.

Are you kidding me! This will be the most popular selling iPod of the year.

How many parents will give this Pink iPod Nano to their daughters on Valentines day alone!

As far as giving money to Breast Cancer, the whole pink thing (and Red) is not about raising money, but awareness of an issue. People are well aware of breast cancer these days (it's not even a top five cause of death in the world).

Apple is a business and with the world economy sinking, they need to keep thinking about their bottom line.

A pink MacBook would also be huge. It would be one way to prevent brothers from stealing their sister's laptops (I hear that argument all of the time!).

For starters they didn't miss out.

A Pink Nano will sell regardless.

Now the Project Red people approached Apple and other companies to participate and from what I heard they were very flexible. Now did the pink breast cancer people approach Apple and if so were they equally flexible?

The Project Red Nano is a branded product. However, that does not mean Apple can't say for Breast Cancer Awareness month, a percentage of Pink Nano sales goes to Breast Cancer. And then when the month is over they can stop. This can't be done with the Project Red Nano because again it's a branded product.

Also the color pink is associated with many things beyond Breast Cancer. For example the Pink Triangle (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4810353&posted=1#post4810353) dates back to WW II when then the Germans would make gay men wear them in Concentration Camps and it is now a sense of gay pride, second only to the rainbow flag.

So in many ways it smart for Apple not to associate this color with any one group, since it has different meanings for different groups.

The guy is an industry pioneer. A multibillionaire. His actions have considerable impact on the worlds of technology, music, and movies. And you call him Stevo. He wouldn't even look at the spit he sends flying into your face if you walked up to him.

I'd like the pink more if it donated to Susan G Komen breast cancer foundation or something. Apple could go whole-hog socially responsible and release iPods with matching cause ribbons. ^_~

She doesn't follow this stuff very closely, but she knows the difference between the older Nano and the newer (our daughter has one of the older ones) and she was insistent that it was the newer one.

Wow that would be really frustrating, trying to tell her she saw something else. My thoughts are with you...

As for the color, it looks alright to me. I bet it will be really popular.

For starters they didn't miss out.

A Pink Nano will sell regardless.

For starters they did miss out.
I also never said it wouldn't sell. I said it would help it to sell - much like it helps sell a red iPod.

You kind of lost me with the pink symbology. So you're happy to say that pink represents WWII concentration camps?

Also just because breast cancer isn't a top 5 world killer doesn't mean no one shouldn't give a sh·$. HIV/AIDS wasn't always in the top five either.

And you're right, Apple is a business and should look at the bottom line. Hence them promoting themselves in a favorable way of helping out the world (either by going green or by helping HIV/AIDS or Breast Cancer projects) go a lot further in creating longterm customers than short term ones.

+10 (I skipped a few people's quotes)
I think it would have really promoted the sale of the pink even more because then you get an ipod AND help out.:D
Now you just get an ipod:( (I canīt believe Apple's marketing blew this opportunity.)

The Breast Cancer awareness package with the pink Nano was available only at Target. Check Target in a couple of weeks to see if they are offering this new one...

I assume in time for Valentine's Day...

I left that conversation convinced my wife was confusing what she saw for something else, but now this news today. I'm going to have to find out who exactly she was talking to at her workplace and why they apparently had an actual pink iPod Nano a week ahead of this announcement.

She doesn't follow this stuff very closely, but she knows the difference between the older Nano and the newer (our daughter has one of the older ones) and she was insistent that it was the newer one.

The red 3G nanos do look pink in the right lighting. Look at this red nano:

Sorry to have lost you, what I'm saying is that the color pink is widely used in the gay community (I didn't know this myself until I questioned a name of a new company).

And I'm not saying people shouldn't care about breast cancer either (and in fact I do, my Godmother was told that if this latest treatment works she will have a 6 months to year to live), it's just not the biggest killer (nor has ever been). The biggest problem with breast cancer was the lack of awareness that women had and that in many cases early detection would save the persons life. This awareness has been achieved.

Now if Apple really wanted to bring awareness to a disease it would be colon, rectum cancer and prostate cancer. More men die of these diseases due to lack of awareness (and also because most of use are to dumb/busy to go to the doctors until it's to late).

But wait if Apple really wanted to support a cancer charity why not Pancreatic cancer, since that's what Steve Jobs had a few years back.

My question you and everyone else, if you want to donate to a charity, why don't you do it on your own. Why is that people want something, an iPod Nano and then want the company selling it to give a cut to the charity. Here is a link NBCF, http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/give-hope/donate-online , and you can donate yourself. Sure you don't get an iPod, but you do get a nice tax deduction.

And then I just heard that Heath Ledger (one of the gay cowboys in Brokeback Mountain) was found dead today.

The whole "just in time for Valentine's Day" is a little ridiculous. You'd buy a pink iPod just because it's Valentine's Day? That's like buying a red or green one because it's Christmas. Doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I'm just cynical because I hate pink

No, you buy an iPod as a valentine's gift (that's how I got my first one). And you buy pink because that's what your girl wants.

Pink will be a big seller year round. This is just a convenient tie-in to kick off the release of it. And they'll sell a ton.
