Sound control panel - samples wrong file

Has anybody noticed that the sound control panel plays a sample of the wrong file? It may be because of an incompatible file type. If you select a wav file for an alert it works in the system but the control panel cannot play the sample...

I may have answered my own question. I put a ton of AIF files into my library/sounds directory. If the alert sound file is larger, it will not be played within the sound control panel. only the shorter files seem to work.

both wav files and aif files appear in the control panel but they will not sample play if they are larger. I believe this explains the behaviour I attempted to describe in the OP.
