Four functioning laptops--no iPod. I was looking at some twelve inch G4 iBook refurbs right before Leopard came out, and wanting to add one to my collection. (luckily I resisted, since my camera died just then.) What sane person needs FIVE laptops? "Wouldn't you rather have an iPod Touch and a shuffle for that money?" I asked myself. Er, no.
My stereo and my car radio serve my musical needs quite well.

Dunno if they've changed it since you posted, but there's now a "None" option... just fyi... as for myself, I have 2. My 30 gig iPod Video saves me from buying/burning CDs to play in my car. Can't live without it. And, well, I couldn't resist buying a touch.

But the second one wasn't a replacement, it was a supplement. The Video iPods just don't work as well for running/exercising/hiding-your-ipod-while-your-supposed-to-be-doing-something-else than the shuffles do. The little clip on them helps you hide them in discreet places too, like in your beard.

I had the clickwheel classic first, and now I have a 5G classic. I really want to get an iPod touch, but I need more space for my music than their capacity right now.
Incidentally, any news/rumors on bigger models of the touch?

I've purchased 8 so far (some gifts) and received one as an xmas gift.
-4G 20gig - Use for listening to music and audio books at home.
-Two 1G Nano's -Gifted one to my niece, use the other for running.
-Four 3G Nano's - Gifted 3 to friends, kept one for music and videos on the go/traveling.
-16gig Touch - Christmas gift from boyfriend who finally realizes I prefer electronics over jewelry. :D
In the future I'm considering giving my 1G Nano away to a relative, and getting a shuffle for running instead. (2 out of 3 friends have since switched to Macs after being so impressed with their 3G Nano's) :apple:

After Apple released the iPod photo, there was just no reason I could hold off any longer (I HATED the look of the UI...mostly the text...on the ones previous to that). So I got a 30GB iPod Photo, which was replaced by an 80GB iPod Video (the photo died a month later, whew!) and since then I have moved on to an 8GB 3G Nano, and I have never been happier with an iPod. For those thinking about the perhaps difficult switch from huge space to tiny: it's not that bad!

Well, I only have the one, a 30 gigger that's not been particularly stressed.
LOL!
I have been wanting a touch, but the "Really NOT NEEDING one" and the "not that much disposable income" factors keep coming into my decision.
(I know...what am I doing here in this forum? :o )
Biggest use for the thing is tunes in the truck and that's not as happy as I'd like because the truck pre-dates Direct In for mp3's.
So I have to deal with a hissy FM transmitter joggling around on bumpy roads.
I'll wait until the next round I think.

I've had :
2G 10GB iPod (Kicked the bucket)
2G 10GB iPod (Used for a long time, upgraded then downgraded to 20GB, finally is giving up the ghost)
4G 20GB iPod (Gave me nothing but problems. Got really pissed at my then-gf and ended up smashing my palm aganist it on my desk and cracking the LCD, sold it for parts to 4JNA, put the 20GB HD into my 2G)
4G 20GB iPod photo (Bought broken, installed 20GB HD from 2G, put 10GB HD back into 2G, used until I fixed my 5G, then sold it to a friend.)
5G 30GB black iPod video (Sister gave to me, she didnt bother to get its headphone jack fixed before the warranty expired, so she bought a new one, 3 days after the warranty expired with her tax refund, bought new jack and casing, installed, works beautifully.)
5G 30GB white iPod video (Bought for parts from my old job for a buck, was customer repair that customer never picked up for a year.)
1G 512mb Shuffle (Dont really use.)
So all in all, I've had 7 iPods.
I'll probably upgrade to a touch when they come with at least 32GB.

We got an iPod as a gift (okay actually my wife did). I don't know, for some reason I never really did fall in love with it.
If I bought an mp3 player on my own, I probably would have gone for an iriver, or a cowon audio. Just basic enough to carry around some tunes.
At the moment though, I really want an all in one device, so I don't have to carry around a ton of crap. An iPhone would do it for me IF it had a SirfstarIII GPS unit in it. Music+Phone+GPS is what I want and while there are plenty out there, you can't get one as part of a new calling plan.

To the above poster- Did you not hear about the software update for the iPhone? They now have gps on them free of charge.
Now me-
2 Of them, and both are still running like champs. I got two iPod videos on the same day (I even remember down to the date because it was basically on victoria day). I bought two, thinking I would keep one packaged and ready for when the other dies. Turns out I decided to use one strictly for video and pictures, and the other for text and music. Works great!
Running since May 21st 2006~ (Yay, I had no horror story with dead ipods!)

Planning on either getting an iPhone this year depending on when they are released and the package that comes with them.
If it doesn't look good, then maybe go with a Touch 32GB and a cheap cell phone.
If I get the Touch, that will put me up to 8 iPods. Yikes!

at least ten. buying, selling, trading, and giving them away (in only two instances on that one, anyway) and such. it's easy to buy a busted one for cheap, fix it, and keep it, until someone offers you twice what you paid to buy and fix it. then you just get another one until your friends stop asking.

Sorry, JoshLV, nothing against you, but it really bothers me when people call the iPod touch the iTouch... it's just like when people think the company is called Mac or iPod instead of Apple.
Anyway, I've only owned one iPod, a Black 5.5G 30 GB, and I'm disappointed I can play rentals on it. I just got it in August... :(

Just one, a Photo 60 GB (I forget the Generation Game with iPods). It looks like I'll be replacing it soon though as I notice the battery is degrading. The replacement will be a Classic 160 GB, as I am not interested in touch screens and stuff. I can't adjust the volume without looking at the Touch, and as I use it mostly in traffic... I'd rather watch the road.

I've got a 2G 8 GB Nano for music and audio books, and an 2G 8GB Nano for video. Also a 2G 40GB iPod with a battery that is almost dead, so I use it as a portable HD to transfer and store large files.
I bought a 2G 2GB Nano so my son could give it to my husband for Xmas two years ago, and about a year ago I spliced on a 30GB iPod video for my son.
I'd love a touch, but the need (or desire, I guess I should say) isn't great enough to justify the cost.

Only 1! My 30g ipod has lasted me quite a while and I am surprised frankly.
The same goes for me. I think this is the longest a mp3 player has ever lasted me! Going on 18 months now.

Only 2, one is a first generation 5GB while the other is a 30GB 3G model with the touch buttons along the bottom of the display.
I don't really listen to music that much on the go rather just through Front Row if I am cleaning or bored. While the battery life has obviously diminished, I generally only use the 30GB as an external storage device to save my MP3s and not use disk space.

First iPod I've ever owned was a 1st Gen Green Nano (Before they added that much needed battery life boost) and then I got a Video when they first came out. I soon found I didn't listen to enough music (nor watched videos) to warrant buying a new one. Got a engraved 4th gen black Nano, and still rocking it :3.

i remember when i was anti ipod a few years ago mainly due to how they locked the ipod down with your music library and i used a hdd mp3 player in the car but when i saw a friends ipod integrated into his stereo (when they first started doing this) i was very impressed.
Since then i went and bought an 80gb video ipod that i still have to this day, and i can honestly say that due to me loving that damn thing, it made me buy the following apple products (in this order)!
1 x 80gb ipod
1 x 4gb nano
1 x 1gb shuffle
1 x 30gb ipod video
2 x macbooks
1 x 17" imac
1 x mac mini
1 x 24" imac (now sold)
1 x 2gb shuffles

I usually go out with the 5G Video iPod. I have also bought 4 iPods (all different models) for friends and family as gifts.

1 - 40GB 3rd Gen iPod
My first ever Apple product. Imported it from the US as they were so expensive here. 4th Gen released about 2 weeks after I got it (didn't know about macrumors.com in those days!). Died of a harddrive failure.
Still the best looking iPod ever made IMO.
2 - 30GB 5th Gen iPod w/ video
Screen broke in my pocket, inside an Agent 18 case. Must have sat on it or something.
3 - 8GB 2nd Gen iPod nano
After the death of the 5th gen went for the cheaper option. Still running beautifully today and the best pure iPod I've ever had. Battery life is awesome. It's going on eBay though to make way for
4 - 16GB iPhone 3G
Looking forward to this one....

First was a silver 4GB mini which I sold to my nephew when I got my 30GB black video ipod as a birthday gift. I still have that one its my travelling ipod
Last Christmas I got the 16GB Ipod touch which is now hooked up via a Sony dock to my home theatre. Once the new apps store gets up and running and I hope has a good ereader app that I can add to the touch then I will be able to ditch my Palm PDA and use the touch as my travelling ipod and the 30GB ipod video will be the one hooked to the home theatre:)

I have owned two. My first was the 6GB Green iPod mini -- I named him Roxas, from Kingdom Hearts -- and I used that for two years. It finally gave it's last ounce of power in February. It stopped syncing; it froze randomly, and I just could not fix it. So, I took it down to the Apple Store, took the 10% discount and walked out with a 8GB Pink iPod nano who is called Dominic -- named after the drummer from my favorite band, Muse. I love that little guy, so I hope it last a good three. C:

• 3rd Gen 15 GB (my first iPod and will always be my sentimental favorite. At 5 years old, aside from installing a new battery last year, it's still going strong and is used daily. I love the buttons!)
• 1st Gen 2GB Nano (received this for Christmas '05, when my first iPod's battery life was down to 30 minutes and I got an itch for a new one. This one is used primarily in the car)
• 5th Gen 30GB iPod Video (I'm a little giddy about this one. I wanted an iPod video but didn't want to spend the $$$. Bought this on Craigslist for $5, the only problem was a broken screen, easily fixed for $20 and voila!)
• 2nd Gen 1GB Shuffle (Simply wanted a iPod suited for jogging/working out and it fit the bill perfectly.)

Six for me personally (if you count the iPhone):
10 GB (2d generation)
40 GB (4th gen.)
60 GB (5th gen.)
1 GB shuffle (1st gen.)
2 GB nano (1st gen.)
8 GB iPhone
And eight if you're counting for the family and include my wife's:
4 GB mini
4 GB nano (Red) (2d gen.)
I still have the 60 GB video iPod, nano, shuffle, and iPhone (and my wife has both of hers). And my brother still uses the 10 GB second-generation iPod, although it's developing problems with some of the controls. All of mine get regular use except the shuffle.

1. First Gen iPod Shuffle
2. Video iPod
3. Second Gen iPod Nano
4. Second Gen iPod Shuffle
I only have my iPod Shuffle (2nd) still since the other ones I sold. Actually, I sold my 1st gen iPod Shuffle the day before they dropped the price to 79$, and ironically, guess how much I sold it for! :D

Why?
As for me, I currently have:
- Original iPod (10GB)
- 1G Shuffle (1GB)
- 2G Shuffle (Silver 1GB)
- 2G Nano (Black 8GB)
- Touch (32GB)
Sold or given away the rest -- about 5-6 if memory serves.

Do refurbs count? I had my 4G break on me too many times because of HD failure. if so:
4 x 4G iPod
1 x 5.5G iPod
1 x 1G iPod nano
1 x 2G iPod shuffle
2 x iPod touch
And if iPhones count
1 x iPhone
1 x iPhone 3G
I currently only own the iPhone 3G and 1 iPod touch which I gave to my little brother.

the one with the glowing red touch sensitive buttons would be my favorite full sized iPod. The second generation blue iPod nano would be my favorite iPod ever.
Anyway I've had three:
1 Fifth generation iPod, 30GB
2 Second generation iPod nano
3 First generation iPod touch.
I've sold my touch and nano however in preparation for an iPhone. (I really wish I didn't sell my nano)

Is having more than one iPod for yourself really necessary?

Is having more than one iPod for yourself really necessary?
'had' is the key word. As in: over a certain amount of time how many have you had?
Many people use iPod classics for having all of their music, for taking to parties or leaving in a stereo system, but also use nanos when they go running. You can't take a hard drive based iPod running and an iPod nano won't hold a full library. I for one am looking to get a new iPod nano (glad they got rid of the fat design) for when I go running. I need a new iPod classic as my old one got stolen and I like to have my whole music collection with me when I go on long trips or I'm camping or something. This would be in addition to my iPhone, since using the iPod feature of it really wears down the battery, and a dead cell phone is no fun.
Chris.

Vote: Poll: How many iPods have you owned? (http://www.macpolls.com/?poll_id=570)
I gave away my Ipod Touch and kept an old school Nano Product Red, because of sentimental value.....I just could not stand to buy one of those fat Nanos, so now I am so happy they came with those new sleek ones again....I'm off to an Apple store!;)
