On my Mac whenever I try to run a Java based program (Limewire, Java Preferences, Java Web-start etc.) it opens up for a moment and then exits with an error, the crash log displays the following information for each program.

Also, trying to run any java applets in Firefox 2.0.0.11 causes the system to slow down dramitically for 10 minutes, the space where the applet is ment to be is blank.
Loading any Java applets in Safari causes it to crash.
I have the latest Apple java updates (and all other updates) as of the time this post was posted, I have used version 1.5.2 of the GUI modifing program UNO (http://gui.interacto.net), uninstalling it has not fixed the problem, and a small program called Login Back to change the background of the login window which resulted in the login the background of the login window to change to the standard Apple blue, not the wallpaper selected.
 
Problem was fixed by downloading the latest Java update package (Release 6) and installing it.
Cause is unknown, could a cause be suggested?
