How are these effects achieved?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction in terms of what software is required to achieve results like this:

Is this type of thing possible on an iMac with the relevant software/knowledge (and Talent)?

Any pointers would be great.

That would be my guess from the quick look at it that I managed at work.
