Quicktime usage notes.
I tried it on a modem connection with Quicktime 6 Pro on a G4-400 and it was unviewable. It was so choppy and the audio was essentially non-existent. So whatever system the softwaere uses for buffering is way too small for crippled bandwidth connections and it seems streams do not have the option to simply save to disc. Fine. So have a huge temporary buffer.
Not everyone has the option to "just go to the high bandwidth connection".

WHAT IS THIS??? Is it the Wifi enabled iPod that Steve is using to control his Keynote slide show???
Go to 14m:05sec and freeze the frame. Look at that control steve is using. That looks incredibly similar to an iPod. I'm currently on a campus computer so I cant paste a picture but im sure someone else will eventually.

Wow, what a great presentation. Steve had a little flub with the "60's Music" Smart Playlist, but he really hammered home the point. Once again, I sat giggling and spinning in my chair with joy.
As for the WiFi iPod, I doubt it. I looked at the shot mentioned and wondered, briefly, but further examination led me to believe it is another device.

edit: btw, steve always looks so silly in the iChat v-chat window. heh heh heh

Wrong... you can use an AOL screen-name in iChat, meaning that you can video chat with AOL buddies (as long as they are using iChat, not the AOL software). :)

No problems with the webcast on my 800Mhz imac with wireless DSL. I am using the latest quicktime download, not sure if that makes a difference.
It is finally nice to see what was done yesterday. I sure wish they would broadcast these more widely at the time of the event. What sense does it make to limit the viewing? I mean why even limit it to a few select Apple stores? Here, we don't have an Apple store and instead have to deal with a section of CompUSA for most local Mac stuff or a small Mac reseller. Don't get me wrong, both are great sources (CompUSA much improved) but why can't these guys broadcast the event? Imagine the number of windows (potential switchers) wondering through CompUSA and see this big production about Apple. They need to make the best use of all marketing possible. CompUSA would win because many Mac faithful would come to the store to watch and some would buy something. Apple would win because it would get more exposure to windows users and maybe get a few switchers.
My 2 cents.

uh... it's only a monopoly when you have no choice (see oil) or your choice doesn't matter because you get it anyway. (see Microsoft)
nobody is forcing you to use iTunes, (Music Store) and the iPod isn't the only choice in the market.

I noticed the same thing while watching this at an Apple store. It looks like an iPod in a colored case; almost like he's trying to hide it. Hmmm, an iPod that can control your Keynote presentations. Cool!

The presentation controller is just a device that he uses to control the slides. He has always used the same purple controller (well at least for the past couple of years). If you look back to older presentations it is the same controller.

to the people with streaming problems might want to tweak your quicktime connection in the quicktime prefpane to be bellow what it actually is. That will at least make the audio work well. I have had to do this before on a 56k connection.

With this kind of press event, if Apple broadcast it live, none of the press would go and it wouldn't be much of an event.
The press would just sit in their offices and watch it on their computers.

They could, if they had a big-screen TV and a C-Band satellite dish. I'm sure that's how Apple gets it to their Apple Stores.

By that standard, neither Standard Oil nor Microsoft were monopolies. Standard Oil had competitors, but none of them were as *good* as Standard Oil. My dad has lots of stories about how all the Standard Oil gas stations had better customer service and cleaner facilities than any of the competitors.
As for Microsoft, I have, several times, successfully avoided using Microsoft products.
As for the clicker: Maybe it's actually a real clicker built into an empty iPod case.

As I understand it having a monopoly isn't illegal. With that said, having a monopoly and using that power that comes with one to control markets/hurt competitors IS illegal and is what Microsoft was booked for.

For the people with streaming problems: My connection is about 4 Mb/s and the stream didn't play properly on my iBook 800 either. In the end, I had to reduce my bandwidth setting in QuickTime Preferences, and play the 100k version :(

It was the best it's ever been for me on a 56k. Zero audio glitches. I used to have quite a few, although it'd gotten better in the last six months or so (QT 6.1 or 6.2 seemed to bring some big improvements). Or maybe my connection improved a little bit (AT&T WorldNet).
I'm still running QT 6.2 on this old iBook. Which version do you have? If you're still on 6.0.x, maybe you should upgrade...

6.0 yes. I am thinking that a useful streaming server ought to serve any QT version at least to a low enough level to cover system 8 users.
In any case I tried setting it to the lowest setting as well (28.8) and still glitches.
It's not right.
But hey I got my hard news from the macrumors low bandwidth news stream. A smart idea indeed.
Even in text mode Steve rocked.

Now look at you! You're brilliant! Your title says it all. Just take those words: wifi and iPod, and squish them together and you got a new "WifiPod"! What's not to love about that?!? ;)
Now, to get back on topic (eh hmm) - I've had no problem getting a great feed. It's no different than watching another QT movie on the computer. I'm running 10.2.6 with 256 RAM. Everything standard on the powerbook. :shruggs:

Stream was good for me.
BTW, Steve's having an affair with Sarah McLachlan. Maybe not, but his wife freaked out after he did a photo shoot with Sheryl Crow. And he did date Joan Baez in his 20's. So, at least if we make the same speculations and assumptions that we make about any other Mac rumor, Steve Jobs has a fetish for female singers and can't keep his hands off of them.
I hope everyone realizes I'm half-joking.

I don't believe QT 6 has ever supported OS 8.6 or lower, and of course the latest versions (6.2 and later??) don't support anything below 10.1.5.
I really don't see what you're complaining about. Apple only supports QT 6 with these streams. QT 6 is free. Newer versions of QT 6 that may solve the problem(s) you're experiencing are also free. I know they're big downloads (20 MB), but honestly, it's not like they can't be done on a 56k. If your connection is good enough for two hours of streaming video, it should be good enough for two hours of downloading software updates. And ones that will (or may) improve those two hours of video to boot.

1. I tried this on an OS9.2 Mac with QT 6.0 pro with settings to lowest bandwidth.
2. I am not complaining, but reporting.
3. My statement that QTSS should support OS's such as 8.6 for example is a standalone comment.
4. I may upgrade to 6.x if that is even an option for THIS OS 9.2 machine, which I doubt. Mean time I did not happen to try a 10.x machine this time.
5. I simply reported results. Results which matched at least one other person who WAS running 10.x.

Ah, OS 9...
Any particular reason why you're not running OS X (or at least booting it occasionally for watching Stevenotes :) )? As I'm sure you know, your G4 will run OS X...

Well, here's the text of your first post:

I interpreted that as "Apple sucks because they don't support low bandwidth [i.e. 56k] connections well enough." Which would be a complaint. But maybe that's not quite what you meant.
3. My statement that QTSS should support OS's such as 8.6 for example is a standalone comment.
Despite replying to that comment, I don't think I quite read it correctly--it was fairly late and it had been a long day without enough sleep. In any case, 8.6 is now about four years old, I believe, and OS 9 upgrade CDs are cheap. (You can get a full 9.1 install CD with a boxed copy of 10.0, for example.) You say that you're running 9.2, so this is a moot point anyway, but IMHO Apple does a pretty good job of supporting older systems where practical.
4. I may upgrade to 6.x if that is even an option for THIS OS 9.2 machine, which I doubt. Mean time I did not happen to try a 10.x machine this time.

Yeah, but they also had broadband. So it wasn't that Apple wasn't properly supporting your narrowband connection--just that they were having some (temporary) glitches on the server end. And I hope we can forgive them for that.

YMMV, and if it doesn't work for you, try again later, and make sure your QuickTime preferences are set right.
It works *perfectly* here on the WSU resnet, on a new 15" PowerBook, but then again, with this much bandwidth and computing power, everything works perfectly.
