Apple appears to be working hard on Mac OS X 10.5.2, and has seeded yet another build to developers. Today's build comes in at 9C23 and offers a number of fixes to CoreGraphics, DVD Playback, File Systems, BackupCore and Web Content Filter. Apple again lists "no known issues" with this seed of Mac OS X 10.5.2.

Apple is expected to publicly release 10.5.2 imminently. The previous Mac OS X 10.5.2 build (9C20) was seeded to developers just 2 days ago.

Known features/fixes for the upcoming version of Mac OS X:

- World of Warcraft fix, No AirDisk backups (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/23/mac-os-x-10-5-2-world-of-warcraft-fix-still-no-airport-extreme-backups/)
- Optional Transparent Menu Bar, DVD/CD Sharing (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/21/mac-os-x-10-5-2-optional-translucent-menubar-dvd-cd-sharing/)
- List View in Stacks (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/12/20/apple-adds-list-view-to-stacks-in-leopard-10-5-2/)

I like the idea of list view in stacks.
Should be a good update.

Nice double post.

This was double posted?I notice this as well.

I'm a little surprised that the last seed didn't make it out today. I just got ahold of Leopard Server and it's great but want my updates. I'm sure all of us will want to scour every little kernel extension to find out what new hardware is around the corner.

Can anyone confirm the Penryn enhancements?

Release date?

Friday was rumored to be the release day they were aiming for, but if they don't get it out by friday, might they release it over the weekend? Has an OS X upgrade ever been released on a weekend day in the past?

DVD Playback! Good, I've watched a couple of DVDs over the last few days and ran into a couple of issues that are now hopefully fixed :) (eg. One of my DVDs puts itself on mute when I fast-forward, and I need to fiddle with the volume slider to get noise out of it again).

Hi Steve.

So.

With all the minimalization of devices achieved and coming soon, I want a way to achieve bulletproof backward compatibility. I want an iPod dock like port that does the following from a dongle:

Ethernet 10/100/1000/10000
FW400
FW800/3200
USB 1/2/3
ADB/PS2/DB9
Composite Video/HDI/xx
and more

I realize the device itself will be a sphere or rectangulator with the wierdest surface ever. So price it at $299 retail and impress us with the interface driver. Dock it.

So from the screenshot the Menu Bar Opacity is either on/off, am I wrong?

I hope that it's not the case. Atleast let us go from 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%.

I would love apple to have a one plug docking solution, where I could just plug in one thing, and my usb would be hooked up, power, firewire, digital audio out, dvi.... This really would be a good idea

They had the perfect way to organize TV shows in Tiger, but then in Leopard they changed it slightly. Instead of listing each tv show, then each season in the next menu level, Leopard initially just put all episodes of a particular series into a big list after you chose the series. Not the greatest system, but still much better than what they have now. In the root menu for tv shows, they now make a seperate entry for each season for each show(some of mine have up to 10 seasons) and whats worse is that they don't TELL you which season it is in the menu, you pretty much have to guess.

This is an inexplicably dumb move from Apple, who had a really sharp UI for this prodcut to start with then just seems tried to intentionally destroy it. These really makes me mad because Front Row was one of the big reasons I upgraded from a powerbook. The ability to basically have a remote that allowed my mac to act as a TV for all my purchased iTunes shows and dvds(ripped with handbrake) was great. But Apple has gone and made the UI almost unusable. I would go back to Tiger, but I have an SR macbook, so that isn't possible.

However, the odds of that being fixed in 10.5.2 are pretty slim. Anyone know of a good front row replacement that is compatible with the apple remote?

They've either been released of Tuesdays or Fridays. Since everyone get their MacBook Air tomorrow, I'm guessing it will be tomorrow because it has the wireless optical software for the Air.

Maybe what you're looking for is a PCI Express Cable Connector (http://www.molex.com/cgi-bin/bv/molex/jsp/family/intro.jsp?superFamOID=-19001&pageTitle=Introduction&channel=Products&familyOID=-16641&chanName=family&frellink=Introduction), since that's all you really need to do all that. The dongles will be largish, sure, but it'll be pretty future-resistant. The connector itself (for x1) is about the same size as a HD15 analog monitor connector.

Since PCIe is a serial standard, you don't have the bus length limited to a few inches any more, so you can put it on a cable without bridging. What's not to like?

i was really looking forward to this update because i miss listview. i've been using hierarchical dock since i upgraded to leopard, and i like it. i might continue to use it, because it gives a lot of space to each icon in the list. this works well for me, because i have a list of all my classes with custom icons for the folders, so it's nice to have the large icons. listview, from what i've seen, looks pretty ordinary.

I would imagine that this is the case primarily because software updates are much more complex and require wide dissemination to developers to test. So there is a large pool of people who are "in the know" on the latest progress of internal software updates. Firmware is probably not that way--it's unlikely that anyone other than Apple itself tests the firmware updates before they are shipped out. That means the pool of people in the know for FW updates is quite small. That's not too good for finding things out in advance. We just have to have patience... bleh.

Totally off the topic, but I'm just curious - how come most of the non-Apple software titles do not necessary follow the gradual increments in their update releases (e.g. Toast jumped from version 8.0.1 straight to 8.0.3, omitting 8.0.2). All OS X updates from the very beginning are in perfect order, no numbers skipped until the next major release. I remember OS 9 being an exception, it jumped from 9.1 to 9.2.1, I don't recall seeing plain 9.2 around. I believe that was also true for pre-9.0.4 versions of Mac OS. Just curious, is it just a different way of labeling the releases and making some of them public?

Numbering gaps probably mean the some release bombed during testing, and was never publicly released.

If the bad test release was called "8.3.1", and had to be fixed, then the eventual release might be called "8.3.2".

To someone who didn't test the software, it might look strange that the version jumpe from "8.3" to "8.3.2" - without any public "8.3.1".

To support people, however, you cannot have a situation where "8.3.1" might be the bad test version, or the fixed version. Therefore, if "8.3.1" is released to anyone outside of the enginerring team, then the fix cannot be called "8.3.1" - it must be called "8.3.2" even if that appears to create a gap.

Peter Sichel on Why Time Machine Doesn’t Support USB Drives Attached to AirPort Extreme Base Stations ★

Peter Sichel (of Sustainable Softworks) in a comment at MacInTouch:

There is an option to have Time Machine show other network attached disks:

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

But Apple is hesitant to enable this as the default since it places the integrity of interrupted Time Machine backups at risk. So Apple is in a difficult spot with respect to supporting 3rd party NAS devices.

I heard a similar explanation from a few people at Macworld Expo last week, albeit regarding AFP, not USB — more or less that the AFP implementation in current AirPort base stations isn’t robust enough. Backups seem to work, but fail when you attempt to restore from them.

Hard to call anything "firmware" when it is on flash EEPROM, more like non-volitile code.

What? Ever considered what firmware actually means?

"In computing, firmware is a computer program that is embedded in a hardware device, for example a microcontroller. It can also be provided on flash ROMs or as a binary image file that can be uploaded onto existing hardware by a user.

As its name suggests, firmware is somewhere between hardware and software."

All this and more on Wikipedia.

i finally got my printer to work via the airport extreme base...i had to trash all the printer preference files (anything with "printer" in the name) and start anew. next thing i know, it finally works...and the printer utility actually auto quit, too! :D

I'm constantly amazed by the number of people on this forum who say they have new machines and repeatable problems and who sit around and moan waiting for an Apple update to fix it. Have you not heard of the Apple store and the genius bar? If your dvd really crashes 'every other time', take it to the x*??!! Apple store and get it fixed! Why is that so difficult?? It is most likely a faulty drive - but instead of going and doing something about it, you sit around forever waiting and complaining for a software fix that'll never come.

Just to get things clear - if you have a new MB or indeed any other new Mac less than a year old, IT IS IN WARRANTY. If there is a reproduceable fault take it in to the Apple store and show them. If it don't work - they are obliged to fix it.

I totally agree, Apple complains about Vista's security warnings, in Leopard you have to allow putting an application into the applications folder, allow a video to be opened if its downloaded... its far worse than Tiger with regard to security!!

unless theres a button which i can turn off?

Numbering gaps probably mean the some release bombed during testing, and was never publicly released.
It's also possible that some release numbers have a reserved meaning; for example, Blizzard reserves 2.x.1 for emergency patches for severe bugs in the main patch (you'd see one of these generally a day or two after the 2.x.0 release), and if they don't have one the next patch out will be 2.x.2.

Hi Steve.

Dock it.

Rocketman

It should julienne fries too. Otherwise it should be priced around $279.

No that would be after the initial release. When everybody will scream because their old dock can't do "Composite Video/HDI/xx" also... Then the $20 rebate will be offered... ;)

Seriously, I can't wait to have a fully functional OS once again! Doh, I did some sarcasm again... dargn! ;)

There's obviously something very specific to either certain chipsets or certain routers (I know, it isn't supposed to matter!)

I back up two macs to a third mac over wifi (using Time Machine) with no issues whatsoever, ever. My wifi works flawlessly (better than under Tiger.)

I'm using two AEBS to create my wireless network and I have around 20 devices (g or n) connected to it.

I keep reading all these issues people are having and I can't believe I'm simply lucky (there's no precedent for that with me and technology!) So I wonder if there's any data out there for the exact nature of the setup people with wifi issues have, versus those who don't.

Very odd!

I hope the server version of the update includes a fix for iTunes 7.6, iTunes has basically been useless on that machine (freezing, becoming non responsive) and I'm not sure if it was from the iTunes update or 10.5.1 since I actually applied them at about the same time.

but this is the machine I use to serve all my content to Apple TV, use it as a DVR (withe a TV Tuner), etc...

Compare a Mac Genius to a Best Buy Geek? Now there's a "night and day" situation!

A friend of mine had her machine (windows) refuse to boot. Kept booting, rebooting, rebooting etc etc. She hadn't updated virus software in living memory and she had a ton of viruses.

Best Buy told her she needed a new hard drive and that would require a new copy of XP (she was told her existing license was no good anymore) and they wanted to charge her $650!

I booted her machine into recovery mode and restored it to factory condition from the restore partition (after putting her drive in a USB enclosure and copying all her data off first.) Took 2 hours (plus about 8 goes round the houses with Microsoft Update till it decided it was up to date.) Cost: $0!

Mac geniuses are pretty good on the whole, and I've certainly never gotten advice THAT bad from them!

Here is a story that our local ABC station (WCVB-5) aired in mid-November investigating computer repair prices and quality of the job, all that the people did was intentionally disable the laptop's Hard Drive, and only one of the three repair shops (Comp USA) was able to repair the actual cause. The Geek Squad guy was way off on his diagnostic of the problem. There are videos of the repairs and such on the page, here is the link:

Perhaps, but then I would think someone could argue they need to change the icon, if it is going to look like a folder to the average user, then it should probably be able to act like one.

personally how it behaves now doesn't bother me, but I could see how it could be confusing to people.

I tend to agree. There are a number of issues with Front Row 2 that need to be addressed. I generally don't like to keep all my movies / videos / etc. in iTunes, but rather keep them stored in folders in the Movie folder. They show up fine and I have a lot of control over how they are arranged, but, for some unknown reason, because they are not in iTunes, Front Row won't remember where I stopped watching one of them. This is a ridiculous limitation. If Front Row can remember where I stopped in a video in one place (iTunes) it should remember where I stop in a video somewhere else (Movie folder).

Aliases are different from smart folders. An alias is a built in function in the file system, I.E. the file system/kernel does all the work and front row talks to the file system, whereas smart folders are controlled by finder, which front row doesn't talk directly to.

(This is not exactly accurate but it's an easy way to understand the difference :) )

Article Link (http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/14599349/detail.html)

Appalling, but not even a little bit surprising. I know that when I am in CC & BB, I routinely hear the "experts" telling customers the worst sort of BS and misdirection(CompUSA was better, Microcenter better still). I can barely keep myself from telling the customer how wrong the sales guy is and why. I know when they ask me if I need help, I always want to say "No, but is there anything YOU would like to know?"

I've always felt that Apple stores could be better, but that the alternatives are so unbelievably awful that Apple folks are very good in comparison. They still want to replace the logic board every time you have a loose wire, but they at least know SOMETHING about the products they sell(they're not just working there to get an employee discount on Playstation games).

Hi Steve.

Dock it.

Rocketman

:)

Sounds cool for future laptops (mainly a docking station).
I would not think it would be pretty with today's laptop as they need to coonect via cables to the dock and let the dock have the full hub capabilities. With todays laptops and desktops you will have a maze of cable going to this device to make it serve it to the real devices.

There's not one single thing that works! I usually have a wi-fi printer (via AirPort Extreme base) and it doesn't work! hard drives won't work either.

I have a 24" iMac that is wireless and networking obviously works alright with it for network. It also does wireless Time Machine backup to an Xserve's firewire disk store, prints wireless, etc

I haven't had any of the wireless problems posted here, yet I have had other minor interface and UI problems with Leopard.

I would imagine, that it just appears to be a larger issue than it is. The whole loud minority thing comes to mind.

I don't think a genius at a genius bar is going to fix software bugs for you. Do I take my computer to him and say "There's a bug in the current version of Leopard... can you fix it for me?" Hahahahahahaha... you're funny.

considering not everyone has these problems it may not be a bug in leopard. or it could be something you downloaded. Or it is faulty hardware. 90% of the bugs people whine about I have no issues with on any of the 4 macs I put leopard on.

And actually, quite a few of the bugs they had temporary work arounds for like the aiport connection dropping out. If you sit on your balls and they that they hurt, good for you!

I totally agree, Apple complains about Vista's security warnings, in Leopard you have to allow putting an application into the applications folder, allow a video to be opened if its downloaded... its far worse than Tiger with regard to security!!

unless theres a button which i can turn off?

Yeah... thats the proof alright, you just blew the secret of Leopard security out the window.

All chipsets are "cheap" what computer maker would use an "expensive" chipset......

Another thing I wish this seed/update would include is the proper recognition of adobe file types. Currently leopard has to be reset to grab the correct icon. It just looks like crap and is annoying to see .ai files show up as generic .PDF documents, even with the .ai extension.

On a side note, is there a quick way to switch documents from preview mode to just the affiliated programs icon?

Agree. The use of the word 'Genius' has gotten a little loose over there at the local Apple store.

I'll bet most of us who regular MacRumors forums etc could easily outsmart most 'geniuses' at the apple stores. I know I could.

I think people are having problems with printers and disks connected directly to the AEBS. Like you, I have no problems backing up two computers to a USB disk hosted by another Mac. It seems the problems lie with the AEBS-USB link.

Very odd!

This looks to be a major set of fixes.

I hated how it took many updates to get Tiger stable, so while I think it is shameful for Apple to have released Leopard in the state it did, I am most pleased that they took the time to do a major patch.

My hope is 10.5.2 takes Leopard to the quality we expect from Apple and not the quality Microsoft spreads on the world.

My only regret from what I have read is there has not been a serious re-think on Spaces, as there have been on other poorly thought-through aspects of Leopard (Stacks, transparent menu, etc.) I would have loved Spaces, but the implementation is just too poorly executed.

But to end on a positive note, I hope this is everything we want it to be--a release with hundreds and hundreds of bugs removed bringing us the Leopard should have given us in the first place.

I have to agree with ncsmith4. Living in Linuxland half the time, I was grateful to be able to use VirtueDesktops on Tiger. Spaces and Time Machine were my top two reasons for jumping to Leopard. And if Spaces didn't work as well as it does now, I'd consider moving back to Tiger, despite VirtureDesktop's flakiness.

Realistically what will happen is the need for a dock will just disappear. Everything will be wireless.

Agreed.
When Apple dropped the floppy, there was a big "WTF?!?" in the community.
The same thing is happening here with the Air. Dropping the optical drive, in my mind, simply indicates we are a lot closer to our "copies" of apps, OSes, etc. sitting on some server somewhere and not on a physical disc on our book shelves.

Remote Disc represents the 1st step towards an optical-less future - bridging our dependence & freedom from optical drives and supported media. We're still a few years from that concept as mainstream, but it would seem inevitable, from what very little I know about such things. Maybe?

A similar thing is happening to physical cables - they're phasing out.
Much like when those 1st iMacs shipped, with their dramatically reduced cable clutter, we're seeing the evolution of this with the Air - 1 cable. For power. I can't imagine we're not far from batteries recharging wirelessly (bluetooth, WiFi, ?) if not the entire device running of some over-the-air power supply.

Your particular configuration and 3rd party add-ons

Your workflow habits

Not quite yet. But the next step will probably be the recharge pad instead. So, instead of a cable, you just toss your laptop down on a pad and it feeds the electricity through those. Thats well known existing tech that would fit in nicely.

Couple that with the technology already in the air and there you go. A completely cableless mac.

Remote Disc represents the 1st step towards an optical-less future - bridging our dependence & freedom from optical drives and supported media.

Windows has been able to read remote DVD and CD drives since before there were CD and DVD drives (an exaggeration of course, but it's been there so long that I can't remember when it wasn't possible).

"Remote Disc" is just a hack done so that the external drive was a requirement for the MacBook Air.

Windows systems (and Linux/Solaris/...) can do a full network install from a network boot if needed - the boot loader is streamed from a server, then the OS files are loaded and installed.

That's much closer to an "optical-less future" than a hack to let the BIOS/EFI mount a remote DVD.

No... There are wireless problems with Leopard alright. I work at a Windows centric company. Wireless on my MacBook Pro works flawlessly when booted into the Vista Boot Camp partition. It hasn't worked in Mac OS since I "upgraded" to Leopard. I've spent hours tweaking it.

Even though the company is geared toward Vista there is a relatively large Mac contingent. The discussion around wireless networking problems under Leopard exposes a big dark underbelly with support for certificates in Mac OS X 10.5.0 & 10.5.1 specifically and standard network security support in general. Apple's wireless support is OK for home and consumer use. It's far from industrial strength though.

Windows systems (and Linux/Solaris/...) can do a full network install from a network boot if needed - the boot loader is streamed from a server, then the OS files are loaded and installed.

That's much closer to an "optical-less future" than a hack to let the BIOS/EFI mount a remote DVD.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I don't think anyone has ever been able to play a CSS-encrypted DVD over the network before. Also, this is the first time anyone has ever been able to boot from a DVD over a WIRELESS network. Apple rarely invents new technologies. But they are damn good at making synergy from existing technologies.

The technology for over the air power is has already been around for some years now. We are a lot closer for this tech to be introduced on cell phones right now than you may know. It will, however, probably be more of a type of pad you lay your phone on or near that induces a sort of uniform electron state in your personal device to charge the electrons. I'm too lazy to look up the specifics of the the technology but it is something along these lines.

Battery operated toothbrushes have been using an almost likewise technology, I think.

Not Camera Raw, camera support from the OS. Yes, for iPhoto/Aperture, but the OS handles raw support for those two applications.

Oh cut the crap please. There are plenty of x-files with wireless on winblows.

No, but it seems logical that they should want to get the Air into the channel and onto the store floors.

When people actually see this laptop, there are going to be a lot more people seduced.

They can release it late today Cupertino time. It is almost 1pm in California at the moment. There is still time.

Any word on X3100 driver updates?

If the update did nothing else besides fix the X3100, I'd be happy. It needs a new driver. It runs worse than the old GMA 950 right now and it's buggy to boot. Intel's driver for Windows makes it run beautifully.

As a matter of fact i do: get started using your head and complain no more. I have to Macs at home, work a lot on Macs at work we have very big wireles and cable network, moved to Leopard the day it came out and to this we have none known problems neither with wireless or anything else.

That may be the case, but for me (and others) some access points constantly disconnect when in Mac OS X, but work fine in Boot Camp on the same computer.

Conclusion: Mac OS X Leopard has some wireless issues.

Here at home, it's great. But if I use my friend's router (which happens to be one of the most popular in the UK) I pretty much just skip OS X, because it will go in an endless loop of disconnecting even with full signal.

You can browse the file contents of DVD discs, but you cannot actually play that media back over the network. Apple let us know that this only applies to commercial DVD media, and you should be able to play back home-burned iDVD movies via Remote Disc.
You can't rip DVDs over the network using a tool like Handbrake.
You can't browse a music CD or listen to tracks. Don't even think about burning a disc remotely.

Also, this is the first time anyone has ever been able to boot from a DVD over a WIRELESS network.

Nobody's *needed to* before the MacBook Air.

Lay off the weed. We're at least a decade before media discs are obsolete. The Air doesn't have a drive because Apple couldn't fit it in and maintain their design goals. It is not a statement on the imminent demise of discs.

Don't forget the unicorn dust!

If you refer to the Sonicare, they do not use a 'likewise' technology. Any DC power converter utilizes two metal coils that are closely spaced so that they induce current from one to the other. The sonicare simply puts one coil in brush base, thus giving the illusion of magic.

I get same problems on lots of netwotks for example there is payed wifi network called zebra in my country and to this day i have no problems using it while with Vista i can't connect to all hotspots i use everyday and the speed on those i can use with Vista is not that good compared to OS X. I have linksys WTR series router at home it works flawless with OS X while XP and Vista seem to have speed problems with it, it's not all caused by OS, it depends on hardware as well. crappy wifi card + crappy router equals problems. faulty components can cause problems also.

Induction isn't used for implants. Pace makers have batteries that will last more than 10 years... they don't use induction.

One important reason induction isn't used for much more than toothbrushes is that it's massively inefficient. Only about 20% of the power used will reach the target device. This might not matter if the device is tiny, like a toothbrush, but imagine if everyone in the world was charging laptops this way and wasting 80% of the power they used. Not only would your bills be really high, the environmentalists would flip out.

No. I want:

Mail to ping EVERY time there's new mail
My mighty mouse to stay connected and scroll every which way I want (that's two issues, bluetooth and driver. No, it's not a hardware or dirt issue)
Connected Windows PCs to be visible in Finder
A reliable WiFi connection.
Spotlight to show ALL files again, including .plists
A decent translator widget that does more than just a few lines.
A decent movie widget that is aware of my area (without the provider having the freaking NERVE to ask ME to convince the theater to sign up with them)

That's just the things that are actually bugging me. Also, those are either advertised features, or features that have BEEN in the previous version of OSX. I couldn't give less of a  about stacks and spaces and such.

Yes. Induction is most definitely used to charge LiIon batteries in implants. It's called transcutaneous energy transmission (TET), which uses mutual induction. It works through around 10mm of tissue. I don't know specifically about pacemakers, but I do know cochlear, drug pumps and spinal cord stimulators all use this method. Non-rechargable versions of the stimulator implants need to have batteries replaced every few years. Rechargeable LiIon versions will go for 5-7 years before requiring replacement. They need to be recharged every couple weeks (to keep above 50% charge, or so, depending on use).

I have done a lot of research on spinal-cord stimulator implants. Believe me, they charge through the skin.

As far as efficiency, I'll agree it can't be as efficient as a direct connection. If the convenience, portability, or other factors outweigh the inefficiencies, then there probably would be a good argument for its use. In the case of an implant, it reduces the frequency of surgeries to replace batteries. Also (in the case of stimulators), it gives the signal generator a higher current source - providing either stronger or longer periods of stimulation than it would be able to do with a non-rechargeable source or actually being powered through TET (no internal battery at all).

All that said, the future will bring better batteries and more efficient transmission designs/components, allowing the design of some interesting consumer devices using this method of recharging.
