System 10 upgrade then...grey screen & apple icon, no desktop!

I did the pop up OSX updates this week, went to reboot & nothing but grey screen/apple. What should I do? I've fixed disk permissions & rebooted & same screen. HELP!
 
I had a similar experience on my MacPro. I disconnected 2 external firewire drives and was then able to boot. If you have external drives connected you may want to try booting without them connected.
