Thanks, Lets hope they get back to the REAL STAR TREK! Dirt in your face,phasers on stun, All kinds of aliens with something other then the putty on the forehead and get the girl when its all done. That was Star Trek.

Yeah, good or bad, I won't miss this movie. I eat up everything star trek.
But out of all the Star Trek tv out there, the original series is the one that really captures my imagination. My favorite episiode is "The City On The Edge Of Forever." where Kirk and Spock follow McCoy thru the time portal and are forced to let Edith Keeler die. There is a trilogy of books out based on that episode from three view points, Kirk Spock and McCoy, or Resolve, Logic and Passion.
But out of all the Star Trek tv out there, the original series is the one that really captures my imagination. Ehhh. I love Trek also, but I grew up with the Picard klan, and honestly, after DS9 and the movie First Contact, I've been disappointed with everything else. Although there were a few decent Voyager episodes, I normally found myself just watching it because it reminded me of TNG and DS9. I just don't think they can revive Star Trek buy trying to keep going backwards. I mean really, who actually could convince themselves, that Enterprise took place before Kirk? Unless they plan on using the same 60's style sci-fi props, it won't be the NC-1701 as you knew it, and loved it. Why not a movie with Frakes in the Big Chair as Cpt Riker? I mean hell, keep the timeline going instead of having to promise Trekkies everytime that this time you will be canonical.

In a Voyager episode called Future's End a Federation ship from 500 years in the future help them do... something. But as far as continuing the series that was an interesting direction. From what I gathered, everything the Federation dealt with in that future was jumping thru time correcting paradoxes.
It's just a teaser trailer, to whet your appetite. Don't worry. Paramount will put out something with a lot more details soon enough.
As long as the true trailer doesn't give away too much of the story. I hate those ones that pretty much summarize the entire plot or give away major plot points. Man, those tick me off. "Castaway" and "Evan Almighty" are ones that come to mind for me in that regard. Just show me enough to be curious to go see what happens.

I'm actually having trouble accepting this as a prequel to TOS. None of the cast reminds me of the original cast in anyway (except maybe Zachary Quinto, who has a vague resemblance to Leonard Nimoy). And from what I saw of the Enterprise from the trailer, while it has the same basic shape and design elements of the original Enterprise, it just looks too different for me to accept it as the same ship from TOS.
My money is on a reboot, and not a prequel.

Couple thoughts here...
JMS of Babylon 5 fame had approached Paramount with an offer to reboot the series. In fact, there's been a couple people out there who've tried to do this, or encourage the same. Heck, even Gene Roddenberry's son has been working on a new series himself, and even posting it to the 'net for free download.
I think most of us Star Trek fans are generally agreed that TWOK was the best of the movies, because it had all the right elements to it. First off, even though it was an expansion on Khan Noonian Singh and the TOS "Space Seed" storyline, it was much more violent and dramatic than Space Seed had been. Of course, we're talking a movie vs. a 60's television episode. However, consider that it was a movie containing a lot of basic elements we already knew.
TWOK had twists and turns, and was not a movie you start at from the beginning and say "Oh, yeah, I can totally see what's going to happen." It had the right mix of plot and dramatic elements, and actually even when you look at it today, it's SFX still hold up reasonably well. AND add to that the fact that they killed Spock, which was something completely unexpected and quite outside the limits of what the Star Trek franchise had ever done up to that point.
It's really a toss-up which was the worst movie. For the longest time the fans generally held ST:TMP to be the worst. However, I would say that it was so far surpassed (in the negative sense) by a number of others that it's no longer even *near* being the worst of the lot.
I'll wait for this movie to come out and for others who's judgment I trust, or who's observations I can calibrate (so to speak) and then I'll decide if I'm going to plunk down my hard-earned cash to see it.
BTW, how is this thing going forward what with the WGA strike? And what happens if/when the DGA and the SAG strike? Sounds to me like Dec. 2008 is just so much wishful thinking.

I think the concept of "Wagon train to the stars" is still a viable story, as long as it focuses on thesis of humanity's struggle with the unknown. TNG played more with applying theoretical and abstract ideas from the pages of Scientific American, like time-space continuum, worm holes and dark matter.
On occasion, an interesting source, but it was still like they were trying to cram as much Stephen Hawking as possible, like House tries to out-freak itself on a weekly basis.

Never seen any of the Star Trek movies or TV show. I mean, I know what they are about and all, but after seeing this trailer a while back I really want to see this movie. It just looks so cool. Maybe cause it's day 1 all over again?

I watched the entire series (well, from season 5 on) on Spike (thank you DVR) and I have to say the later seasons were fantastic (the first few ... well I hated). The last episode (2 part) was one of THE BEST Star Trek shows I've seen. It was so good they should've made it a movie.

I haven't seen much of Voyager, but what I have seen, I've loved. The finale was also very good...then came Enterprise (ugh!).

I'll withhold judgment, for now.
I had trouble accepting that Casino Royale would be a "prequel" James Bond film, but that seemed to work out OK.
Perhaps this movie will be similar.

I didn't like it until the last 5 seconds. But I agree, we'll see if they did this film right or not.

Alright, so I've been looking at the new Star Trek teaser from Paramount for a while now, and I've got some questions in my head. Let me show you four snapshots from it and get your comments and feedback.
Can someone here please tell me, just where in the hull (pun intended) is this location? I would like to think I know the hull of a Constitution-class starship rather well, and this doesn't look the least bit familiar.
And this, does this look even vaguely familiar to anyone, either? I feel lost looking at this.

Would someone please tell me why in the world they'd be building a starship somewhere planet-side? Given the level of sophistication in good storytelling, anyone worth their salt would realize it would be highly impractical to lift something like Enterprise from the surface into orbit whole, and moreover this is hardly the most aerodynamic shape, so you're looking at adding considerable drag.
And before someone can say, "Well, it's being built in an enclosed, shirt-sleeve drydock facility in orbit," let me point out that through the "sky" is observable absolutely no tell-tale signs of dockage, or of walls with hatches or observation ports, nor anything else you'd expect to find on the interior walls of one of Starfleet's giant orbital space facilities.
Alright, let me step off my soapbox here and make room for those who would like to add their 2¢.

Actually, you can see the town and some trees in the third shot (very bottom) and since the Star Ships have inertial dampeners, etc. they don't need to be aerodynamic. Flying bricks would even be fine.

And why the hell do the warp nacelles have turbines? I think that is a bad explanation of the spinning you see in TOS Enterprise.
