i read that the old ones should be 20.00 cheaper to get them out of stores faster.

Sounds right to me, Smalldog.com is selling their iPt as an "A version"

however.... "B" does not mean it is a new manufacture.

i bought a "b" version and it was a week 38.

they just took left over stock and updated them and put them back in the box.

I bought an iPt recently and was reading the box to see if I could tell whether it was a new one or an older one. On the back it said in the first paragraph "iTunes 7.4 or later" so I knew it wasn't a new one. The new ones require iTunes 7.6.

Not necessarily the 'B' version thing, because as stated above some models that have been available for months are 'B' versions.
