mail folders?

is there a way to make folders inside Mail so i can organize my incoming emails?

Yes, they're called mailboxes.

Go to "Mailbox>New Mailbox...", enter a mailbox name and choose a pre-existing box to put it in.

I've got well over 10 on my .Mac account and they really help with organization.

Yes. You get mailboxes named In, Out, Drafts, Sent, and Trash by default. To add more, select Mailbox -> New Mailbox... and fill in a name for your new mailbox, e.g., "Spam products I ordered."

You can also create multiple levels of mailboxes in a hierarchy. Suppose you wanted a mailbox named Hobbies containing submailboxes named Origami and Yoga. You have two choices, depending on whether you want to be able to store mail (a) in the Hobbies mailbox too or (b) only in the submailboxes.

In case (a), create three folders, with these names: Hobbies, then Hobbies/Origami, then Hobbies/Yoga. You really do type the slashes, as I've shown, when you type the mailbox name. This will make three mailboxes, with two of them inside the other.

In case (b), create two folders, with these names: Hobbies/Origami, then Hobbies/Yoga. This will make a top-level folder named Hobbies, but it won't itself be a mailbox.

Open Preferences>Rules.

try using Rules (in Preferences) to sort between the folders once you have some created... for instance i have a receipts folder that automatically catches (and marks as read) all messages with paypal or itunes or ebay or receipt or transaction in the subject line... that way i have them all for reference, but i never have to sort through them...

comes in handy on so many levels, yet most users don't take advantage of it (yet complain that Mail isn't powerful enough). they do need more comprehensive rules tho, hopefully that will come with time...

one of things that annoys me about mailboxes in mail (and please, correct me if I'm wrong), is that if you use a rule to divert incoming mail to another mailbox (like the receipts in paulwhannel's example), the Mail icon in the dock doesn't show register the message (although the incoming mail sound does work).

I don't suppose there's any way around this??

macette! heyyyyyy girl! where you been?

the message count/indicator in the dock will be there, regardless of folder, as long as you don't also use the rule "mark messages as read". so don't add this rule, and you should be fine--

here's my iTunes receipt rule, set up to carefully avoid false positives. You can see where it marks them as read, so i can ignore them--

Howdy... I've been around, but no so much (I note that my average post count is down to .66 per day...)

Anyway.

I'm not getting the rule to mark messages as read - they appear in the mailbox that they're directed to (for example my friend Pete's emails all go into a folder marked "Pete") and when I get a new one, the folder heading goes bold and a count number appears next to it, but no number shows in my dock item. And he has the same problem with emails from me.

huh. i tried it and that happens to me too. i wonder if that's intended behaviour... kind of annoying...

yeah, annoying. it would be particularly annoying if you were deaf, or if you had your sound turned down so you didn't HEAR incoming messages.

maybe panther will fix it?
