I'm starting to build some sites and I had a few questions about getting them published.

So, I know that I can build my site on iweb, publish to folder and then transfer to an FTP client. A little searching and I found Fetch -- seems like a good program to use and advertised as "mac friendly".

I have purchased domains on Godaddy, Network Solutions and Whois.com.

What do I need to purchase from these providers now and get on with publishing my sites??

you need a hosting plan now, with that they will supply you with the FTP login information and you can upload it and you are all set.

try 110mb.com for some excellent free hosting plans. If your domain provider lets you change the nameserver of your URL then attaching it to 110mb.com is easy.

FTP is very simple these days...

1) The webhost provides you with an FTP host, username and password
2) Good webhosts set it up so that after your login, the default directory where you end up is where your web files are located, just upload/download files between local and remote. A GUI program like Fetch is suggested for novices.

Ask your webhost for the correct path to your "document root" if after your FTP in you either can't figure out where to put files or they don't tell you up front.

Common Example: /home/youraccount/public_html <-- put files in public_html

One last thing - you might need to adjust permissions on directories or files that require write access, if applicable, such as CHMOD and CHOWN. If you have a script updating a guestbook or blog, make sure write access is granted or if you have a CGI script, execute is enabled. Get the idea?

CHMOD is how you adjust read/write/execute access
CHOWN is how you adjust ownership of the file(s) - rarely needed

I use Eleven2.com, and they've been very helpful and reliable. Uptime has been great.

Whatever you do, Stay away from iPowerWeb. They could possibly be facing a class action lawsuit for muscling their customers into programs they don't want - I myself have had much trouble with them.

Hosting is cheap - starting at a few bucks a month with all the options you'll need (webstats, no email limit, etc etc). I'd recommend Transmit, except I see you already have Fetch..

Some hosts also use this path for the web root:
home/youraccount/httpdocs <-- put files in httpdocs

So I checked out the hosting choices on Godaddy and it seems ok, prices are fairly cheap -- $5-6/month.

What do mac and iWeb users generally choose: Windows or Linux hosting?

I really mess out with this.
Can you give me the steps to upload my site.

Do you have .Mac or another web host?

Uploading is generally pretty easy. You'll need a password from your web hosting company and the ftp address.
