mail.app force imap mail check

I use gmail through imap in mail.app. It will automatically check for mail at the specified interval but I can't seem to figure out how to force a mail check if I'm expecting mail. The get mail button or synchronize option doesn't do anything. What am I missing? I set the check interval for every minute so not a big deal but there should be an easier option right?
