View Full Version : Help please! Generic Photoshop icon in OS X

I did a site search and found this discussed last year (in the archives), but it didn't seem to help. If I'm posting this question in the wrong area, I apologize.
My Photoshop 7 application icon has suddenly gone generic. It has also happened to the ImageReady app icon and the Canoscan icon. Under OS 9, I would simply rebuild the desktop. But I'm running OS X (10.2.8) on my new G5. I've tried repairing permissions, but it had no effect. I also tried the utility RebuildDesktopX, but it didn't help either.
Any ideas? Has anyone else had this problem under OS X? (I suppose I could re-install the apps, but I'd rather find out how to fix the problem.)
Thanks in advance for any help.

it was the right place :)
Well for starters, if "generic icon" == the standard app icon with the "A" and the white stuff behind it, you might wanna try restarting that computer.
If that doesnt work, download this app called Cocktail from versiontracker and have a little fun with it :)

Thanks for the reply. :)
Yep, the generic app icon is the one you mentioned. I can't figure out why PS all of a sudden didn't remember who it was! I've restarted a few times with no results. I'll give Cocktail a try. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Thanks again!

No go. :(
I tried out Cocktail (Even some features I was unfamiliar with), but no luck.
I finally just got the icons from another computer at work and pasted them in the "Info" box in the Finder. Crude, but it worked. ;)
I'm still wondering why the apps lost their icons in the first place?

Thanks. I've been there and picked up a few nice sets. But it's just driving me nuts why my apps lost their icons overnight like that.

Very true. I completely hosed a (non-backed up!) hard drive this past summer. Luckily a friend had Data Rescue X and was able to save most of my docs. Ah, when will we learn to back up regularly...

I wouldn't be surprised if it was all Carbon application icons. I've seen Apple manage that during betas. For some reason, Cocoa application icons didn't seem to go away, though.

Ah, interesting! I'll have to check that out. I only noticed my Adobe icons and Canoscan icon had changed, but I didn't look for more. Thanks for the possibility idea! :D

Also, try repairing permissions. I think this happened to me once and it might have been a permissions problem.

Thanks for the advice, but I've already tried it. Didn't do anything for me. :(
