View Full Version : Oh my Lord, my 2.8ghz just murdered my 3ghz octo

So I run a simple benchmark on every mac I get. I record a show with EyeTV. I record 1:01hr and then encode it to ipod at the highest settings. Here are the results for my mac pros.
- 4 core 2.66ghz old mac prow/6gb ram: 1:07:37 hrs
- 8 core 3ghz old mac pro w/9gb ram: 0:46:52 hrs
- 8 core 2.8ghz New mac pro w/2gb ram: 0:27:15 hrs
That is freakin umbelievable. I can't wait to test it when my other 8gb of ram gets here. I think its safe to say that the new 3ghz octo is twice as fast at the last version. WOW!
Oh, and just in case you are curious. My mac mini with the elgato Turbo .264 got 1:20:17 hrs.

Pardon my language, but KICK A$$!
Iīm sure you used the same encoding settings but maybe the time also differs, if the content of the video has more or less movement, but that canīt have that much of an impact. Hard to believe, the difference is that huge!
Very, very impressive from which ever angle you look at it. Now if only they would start shipping the Mac Pros with the 8800GTs. :o

Maybe thatīs why they havenīt changed the casing in years: Just pure power. Never out of style. Unlike lots of other old Apple-designs.

I'm guessing if you add extra RAM that's not needed, it'll slow down the system.

I thought Macs love RAM. This too much RAM is bad stuff is confusing me.I'm populating my 3.2GHz model with 32GB of RAM. I think the story of "too much RAM can be a bad thing" was started by someone who can't afford eight 4GB sticks so they decided to poo poo the idea of fully populating a new Mac Pro.
Are there any others here who are planning on spending the extra $2900 at OWC for a full set of RAM sticks maxed out to the full 32GB? :) I want the ULTIMATE Mac this time round. Been waiting 14 months for this moment. Why cripple this thing in any way?

I see DEATH up ahead. I'd rather be computing to the max cause I can't do it after I die.Interesting rationale. You know, some of us are actually using these Macs for work/business tasks, and think about it in terms of a cost/benefit analysis. Yet others have to deal with the nasty reality of budget constraints. And for a few of us, both things apply...

I used Popcorn 3 to convert a 2 hour DVD to Ipod Video High quality settings,
My iMac G5 2.1(isight) 2.5g Ram bought 2 years ago, took 280 minutes and with 95-100% CPU usage, cant even surf the net.
My Mac Pro 8-core Mac Pro 2g Ram early 2008, took only 28 minutes and with 370% CPU usage, about 40% across 8 processors so still can do other things.
Wow, 10 times different in only 2 years, and the result of iDVD, 2.7g project file
My iMac took 60 minutes vs MacPro 20 minutes only.

Is there any way you could run the benchmark with one physical cpu disabled? I'd be very curious to see the results with just a single quad core cpu running. Something tells me that it would be very similar performance - I somehow doubt that the other four cores are working very hard in most tasks. These are fantastic cpus and a single quad-core is probably smoking all by itself!

Well, what is amazing to me is that all the numbers say the 2.8 is slower or at least as fast at the old 3ghz octo. Real world tests show it annihilates the 3ghz. It shows that a 3ghz harpertown is twice as fast as the 3ghz it replaces.

I think you're misinterpreting his post. He's comparing a new "Early 2008 2.8" to the previous (pre-Harpertown) 3.0. The current 3.2 (Harpertown) would be even faster than the aforementioned 2.8 in this test. The thread title is a little misleading, but it does serve to grab the eye.
Thanks, Eric, but I did understand the test format. Just saying that the performance upgrade from the prior pro has apparently been substancial, enough so that I don't think I'm going to be disappointed in my dicision to go with the 2.8. Doing so saved me with enough money to buy all my RAM, and upgrade from a 23" display to a 30". Wow, that 30"er is nice.

Wow, thats pretty impressive.
Maybe EyeTV doesnt use more than a gig of RAM though.

I'm tempted to get one of these in place of my 2.66 quad. I bet my wife wouldn't even notice if I swapped them in the middle of the night :D
First I have to line up a buyer for my old machine who will be willing to come to my house between 2 and 4 am. Mac Pros are just too damn big to hide around the house for long ;)My hunch is you can probably still sell a loaded Quad 2.66 for not much less than the cost of a base 2.8 Octo. Surely your wife won't object to that will she? :)
These performance details are still unknown to most of the general public.

Just to let some people know, I've got the 8 core - 2.8 mac pro (stock configuration) and its averaging about 110 fps on the ipod high-rez settings (H.264) coming from a dvd movie. Thats while I'm browsing the internet. Its using around 600% of the processor. Its simply amazing!

Sorry for being slightly off topic, but when someone says x.x GHz octo Mac Pro, what does "octo" mean?

- 4 core 2.66ghz old mac prow/6gb ram: 1:07:37 hrs
- 8 core 3ghz old mac pro w/9gb ram: 0:46:52 hrs
- 8 core 2.8ghz New mac pro w/2gb ram: 0:27:15 hrs
That is freakin umbelievable. I can't wait to test it when my other 8gb of ram gets here. I think its safe to say that the new 3ghz octo is twice as fast at the last version. WOW!
Oh, and just in case you are curious. My mac mini with the elgato Turbo .264 got 1:20:17 hrs.[/QUOTE]
I hate you...:D not really, but darn these are hot! I makes me even greener in the face to have bought the 2.66 in December :(....
BTW, what is your GPU in the 2.66 old system?

'Octo' means it has eight cores. Just as quad means four cores. :)

I got my new 8-core 2.8GHz this weekend. I added an additional 2GB of RAM (eek - bought it from Apple, so I paid a premium) but other than that, it is the base model. I ran XBench on it and the stock hard drive and thought I'd share my results. I absolutely LOVE this machine!!!!! It converts a 2 hour divx movie to Apple TV with VisualHub in 12 minutes!!!!
Here are the XBench results:

I just can't wait to come back here in 10 years and laugh at how long it took to encode movies.
Or marvel at the fact that at one time, the studios even allowed us to "own" one.

Good point, especially if you have an older 8 core Mac Pro. Many buyers wouldn't know about the difference between an 07 Octo and an 08 Octo. The fact the case is the same helps this.

So I got my ram today. Now have 10gb in the mac pro. It is definitely feeling faster. Surfing the web is without a doubt snappier BUT I ran the same encoding test with the new ram and guess what. SAME exact time. Interesting. I guess its not a ram intensive process to encode video. I would not have thought so.
