From the article:
Unlocking an iPhone isn't easy. ... To unlock the iPhone, a user needs to break the device open, being careful to avoid inflicting permanent damage, and make changes to both the hardware inside the casing and the software.

Hmmm.... so what hardware would that be then?

When I unlocked mine (I am on O2 - just was messing about) I had wires and bits all over the place. Took me ages to put it back together. Then there was flux capacitor which also needed recalibrating to 1985.

Right pain to do.
