What the heck is going on? My fans are going CRAZY

I don't know what the problem is. Some fans in my computer are going nuts. They whirr up, run high for awhile, and then go down to half, then go off, then whirr up again.

Usually this thing is silent. I'm showing over 99% of my system free in activity monitor, as it should be, I'm only running Firefox.

Mac Pro 2.66, 5 Gigs ram, 10.4.11. No software updates available.


any ideas?
 
just throwing this out there, is it the x1900? I know there have been issues with them. Can you locate the fan? or have an activity monitor to see which fans are reviving up?
 
well I think istat should tell you your fan speeds. its downloadable from the internet, a quick search should find it. anyone have a MP and have some advice?
 
I reset the SMC, and got iStat Pro. I still hear some big ol' fans stirring up, but iStat is saying my system fans are between 400 and 600 rpm. I guess that means it's my video card? I've got both installed, but I'm using the X1900.

Is a call to AppleCare in order?

You could just take the side case off and hear if it is the Radeon X1900XT that makes the noise.
