Total Newbie here, seems like it should be easy but in navigating folders, I am trying to open a folder with the keyboard and it keeps wanting to change the name of the folder instead.

Yeah. It makes more sense. Since you can navigate via arrows and with "cmd + up arrow" go to the parent folder 🙂
