So im making a website with iWeb but dont want to pay 99 bucks for a .Mac account. anyone know a good place to get some free webspace and put in a subdomain name.

I could use some help in this area because im not very good at it. Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm... it really depends on quality. I'm a web host and have taken many refugees from the free sites. If you plan on hosting just a personal site, then any ole' site will do... but in all honesty... 99 bucks isn't really that bad. It's only ~$8/month and has four times the features of a general web host.

i think .mac is kind of a joke. an expensive joke. there are several communal nix* servers out there that cost the same (or much less depending on the amount of years bought), but pretty much have unlimited space and traffic, AND domain name registration is often included (IE www.mysite.com)...

here in canada i use Hostpapa.ca

Unlimited space and traffic is a big red flag. No one can offer that, if they do, it's a sign of a bad host.

Having your host control your Domain name is another bad idea. What if they go out of business? Do you want to build a reputation on a domain name you don't own. Big no-no.

it's not really unlimited, but it's a lot... like, it's not a good idea for some massive site like Oprah.com to sign up on a communal server, as those sites require dedicated servers (which cost much much more)... just in comparison for a homepage + backup (vs .mac), or for small and medium sized businesses it's more than enough.

the host doesn't own the domain name, the client does.

thanks for the ideas. I signed up for the 60 trial of .mac

i was able to throw together a site in about 2 hours...I just have to figure out if im gonna stay a .mac user when the trial is over.

i hate to sound like an ad, but ive been using Surpasshosting.com for the past 3 years now and have had no issues what so ever (and their support is fast an dknowledgable)

i just have their basic 60$ per year plan; 200gb space/2000gb bandwidth, unlimited ftp/email/subdomains + 10 add-on domains.

check it out and visit their community, they have a good forum too.

by the way.. go to any apple store, tell them u want to buy .mac for 70 bucks, and majority will sell u

i went in said "hey i want .mac, and i heard u can buy it with the $30 discount u offer to new cmoputer buyers?"

usually they'll say YES, b/c they want to push the product.

it is good value, and basically sets itself up - you just put the details in once, if your an iphone user you can upload to your web gallery to which is cool.

Good points! i nearly forgot about the iphone capabilities, while its great for gallery hosting not-so-complex stuff...that is a HUGE benefit for on the go, right now type of transferring. (nothing my host can compare to!!)
i guess im nit picky and dont have an iphone or anything like that, but i do say that if .mac has some advanced options id definitely consider primarily using that =)

I use 110mb (http://110mb.com). It has been great for my PHP website, so should be fine for all static HTML (iWeb) site :)

I think when you look at it as $8/month then it's a good deal. I mean, ya, you can find cheaper hosting per month with more space and bandwidth, but the integration with your Mac (in terms of Backup, etc.), web galleries, and iWeb, it really makes it a good deal.

At first - I thought wow - 99 is a lot of money, but 8 bucks a month to have everything automatically backed up with one click from my Mac is worth it.
