I can't seem to find a converter that will convert movies that can be played on my iPod touch. Anyone have any suggestions?
I've tried Handbrake but it doesn't seem to want to play it on the iPod...

handbrake does dvd rips just fine (at least the recent versions with the updated x264 encoder) but you _have_ to choose an ipod-compatible h264 profile.

cosmopod works for me it converts alot of different formats and it converts realplayer to play on your ipod. You have to have the latest safari to use it. I have a mac. tim

Can anybody give me a hint on how to get videos to look sharp and not all grainy? Basicly what are the best settings for the itouch when converting videos? Or is there something im missing?? Because every video that I have put on here looks kind of pixely....it dosen't matter if its a cartoon like family guy or a movie. Thanks

Try a higher bitrate and a higher resolution. I rip my movies at 720px wide H.264 with 1200kbps bitrate.
Handbrake is the best for DVD to iPod conversion
iSquint is okay for free software
VisualHub is a killer video convert (does just about any format) but, it's shareware.
Hope any of that helps.

can someone give me some ballpark numbers on video file sizes when in the ipod format? I am thinking im going to get an ipt but am trying to decide whether or not I really need the 16GB (my current ipod is a 1st gen 3GB? mini which has suited me just fine)
How much for a divx video that is about 30 minutes long and 250MB?
What about a divx video that is about 2 hours long and 700MB?

what profile are you using with handbrake? all my attempts to produce anamorphic and/or wider-than-640-columns video through the ipod profiles (using the x264 'ipod' encoder) failed (see my updates (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4848527&postcount=18) to our previous discussion).

you final video size can be calculated simply as: bitrate * length
for example, a 1500Kbps encoding of a 1h-long movie will produce
1500 * 3600 = 5400000Kbits (= 675000KB, or ~670MB)

I use Instant Handbrake, It's an easier to use version of Handbrake. I rip to the MP4 format instead of H264 & it is a good picture on my 34" Apple TV setup & works great on my iPod. A typical movie on this format is aroung a Gig.

DVDFab Platinum works great, even has a trial for you to try before you buy. Sure, it cost money, but its very easy and customizable with bitrates and what not.

Well if you have a bunch of crap divx and other codec videos you've downloaded off the internet, then use VISUALHUB.
However, the best way to go IMO is use an original DVD and Handbrake to rip and convert it using the iPhone/iPod Touch presets.

Maybe I am missing something simple but I converted a dvd last night using Handbrake. I put it in my iTunes, and then when I tried to load it onto my iPod Touch I got an error msg saying that my iPod doesn't support the file. Is there some setting I am missing during converting??

Ok I didn't really want to start a new thread, and I think the TS found his answer, but how do I convert .bin files into mp4? I tried mounting the files with daemon tools but there is nothing to convert. Also I couldn't find any converters for a PC.
Thanks

VisualHub, hands down. What else can convert an HD MKV file to an iPod touch size high quality video in about 15 or so mins? I love it.

Since the iPod Touch screen res is 480x320 and 16:9 dvd fit into that even at 480x272 I always rip my movies at 480x272 ( or as close as I can get ) with a bit rate of 1000kbps and an audio bit rate of 160kbps in h.264 mp4 and aac audio
hope thats helpful
