Mail always shows 25 unread messages (Gmail/IMAP)

As title really. My Gmail is set to IMAP with POP3 turned off. Every time I check my mail then go back to the Home screen there's always a '25' badged to the Mail icon but I can't find where these are unread in Mail. It doesn't matter if I get no new mail or get 3-4 messages and read them so the blue 'unread' blob disappears.

Any ideas folks?
