Cpu usage high/kernal_task?

I have a 3 yr old powerpc imac g5 and all of the sudden when i play video or do more than 2 things at once the cpu usage in my activity monitor spikes and it puts my computer into sleep mode. i look in the activity moniter and kernal_task is taking like 50% of my cpu. i'm not sure what i should do so can anyone help?
