So i bought a 3.50
cable from ebay
that plugs into the back of my Powermac G4 and
allows it to be put on a tv via svideo or composite

vga to svideo/composite

so i plug it in
and i get nothing on the TV

so like idk what i did wrong

i adjusted the video on the Powermac to
800 x 600 (or the smallest it would go)
and i still get nothing
except for a black screen?

POWERMAC G4
DUAL 500 MHZ

Try refreshing the displays in system preferences and see if it works...

Are you 100% sure it works with your G4?

The video card in my Mac Pro is so awful it can't even connect to a TV.

Video cards of that vintage do not support S-video/composite output via the VGA port.

Is this what you bought?
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=M9109G/A

Because that should work but you might have to "detect displays" in system preference or turn on the computer/TV in the right order to get it to work.

The video card does not output S-video or composite AT ALL.

Such adapters are meant for use with specific video cards on later Mac's.

you can get another video card. i know my ati 9800 has a tv out port on it via s-video port and connectes with an svideo or composite. it's also got dvi and vga.
